Dominican journalists told to seek “common ground”

Kentish addressing the ACM’s assembly in Barbados last week

Dominican journalists have been asked to find common ground and work together for the good of the profession here on the island.

The plea came from the new President of the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers (ACM) Anika Kentish at the organization’s Ninth Biennial General Assembly in Barbados last week.

“Theodore Roosevelt once said that the most important single ingredient in the formula for success is knowing how to get along with people,” she said while addressing the event. “So I am going to implore my Dominican brethren to find common ground on the national association. You have to look at what the media workers there want and how to find a way to meet their needs.”

The event was attended by Garvin Richards of the new formed Dominica Media and Communications Association and Carlisle Jno Baptiste, representing the Media Workers Association of Dominica (MWAD). DCMA was granted observer status at the event, while MWAD attended although its membership in the ACM was suspended.

There were some very public exchanges between the two groups which did not escape the Barbados gathering with past President, Wesley Gibbings, saying earlier in the meeting that the fighting must stop.

Kentish said the bickering between the groups must stop.

“Carlisle, you are here, Garvin you are here, you are both leaders in your own rights,” she said. “I am going to encourage you to use that leadership to your advantage, to encourage patience and sober discussion among the Dominican media fraternity. The choice is yours. You can continue the back and forth and go nowhere or you can work toward a common ground where you can build a strong, formidable representative body.”

She said the ACM’s executive is committed to providing assistance to ensure that the media fraternity in Dominica has a functioning and vibrant representative body.

She also said the ACM will support the organization that properly establishes itself and has the membership to back it.

The DCMA now boasts some 70 members and there are plans to meet with Jno Baptiste soon.

There are no proper journalists in this country. None of these people would ever get a job elsewhere.

Carlisle and Matt them was in MWAD they killed it with their dirty politics. MWAD was not functioning so It is unfair to for Gibbings and Kentish to asked Garvin to work with MAtt and Carlisle. The man has invited Matt them to work with the newly formed group Matt in particular refused saying if Charlie is part of the group he do not want to be part of it or any group Charlie is involved in. Who is Matt? Now Kentish and Gibbings the truth is Matt seems to be all u good friend so all u will not tackle the real problem which is Matt Peltier who is the mouth piece for Lennox Linton. Well Kentish and Gibbings the truth is if Garvin continue to depend on Matt and Carlisle to make anything succeed in Dominica wheel and come again. So Garvin must have to do what he has to do if media workers can stay alive in this country and prevent his group to die like MWAD..

Dominica don’t have journalists. What’s going on in Dominica is everyone taking sides. I was listening to the different radio stations in Dominica and it’s sure a waste of time listening to. There’s a young lady in Dominica reporting on Facebook what’s going on in the country I rather listen to hear I believe she’s a teacher from the north. She’s doing a better job than these so call journalist. Most people in Dominica is afraid to talk. Guess they don’t want to lose their jobs. Alas??

What Dominica journalists you talking about? Does Dominica have journalists? So because someone working at a radio station they are journalist? In any country the number one job of a true journalist is to report what is taking place in the country, no matter who is involved. True journalists are like the police of the country in the sense that just as civilians respect the police so to politicians respect, even afraid of journalists less they get exposed. In Dominica the so called journalists are friends of the government and instead of the government afraid of them it is the so called journalists that are afraid of the politicians and the so called Journalists are fighting one another just to get to see who can protect a corrupt government better. If Dominica had real journalists we would be a much better country because Skerrit would be very careful. As for those working on DBS aka damn bold ….; they are nothing more than jokers
