UPDATE: Police identify Dominicans rescued by cruise ship

missing at seaThe police in Dominica have identified two men who are in the custody of the Barbados Immigration Department after they were rescued at sea on Tuesday.

Assistant Superintendent, Ainsworth Irish, said they are Timothy Louis of Victoria Street in New Town and Davidson Etienne of Fond Baron, Loubriere.

Reports indicate that the men, together with two Vincentians, were rescued by the cruise ship Carnival Valor about 50 miles off the coast of Dominica.

The four men were in a fishing boat, name Blad.

Irish reported that Etienne, who identified himself as the captain, said the boat developed engine problems and were towed and picked up by the cruise ship which was heading to Barbados.

They were taken to the Bridgetown Port and handed over to Barbadian officials.

The police in Barbados are now conducting investigations into the matter, assistant superintendent Irish said.

Every back door person transported by these “fishermen| nets the government 1000 ec dollars. Put that in your pipe and smoke it. But that law was passed that haitians and dr citixens must deposit that amount and they forfeit it if they don’t pass back through immigration. Politicians have the duty to KNOW the effect of the laws that we/they pass. So we all in it.

Why do they bother catch them in the first place only to throw them back in the water? It makes no sense. In this case why are they out fishing anyway and fishing for what?

In the days i grow up in Newtown we had Fishermen…the real thing like Elwin, Beche, Kaicoon, Scot, John Montserrat to name a few and they use Tarce (fish port) and Sen (the net) to cash fish and they could Sennea or Scot who was a Vincentian n John Montserratian would use Harpoon to get Butt. Also u knew who had boats and how many boats and who went to sea that morning so u cld be the first to go buy ur fish.

But those days Newtown dont hve Fishermen any more! We have Fisher-of-Men (the people to transport ppl back door) and the Fisher-of-Drugs (that is self explanatory)! Yet still they have Fishermen Licence and Boat register from and with the proper authority. Most boats in Newtown, are not owned by ppl in Newtown, they from places that doe have a shoreline but have rivers that run through them! If we had Fishermen in Newtown, we would hve more fish in the Fisheries in Newtown and Roseau, hve in the local supermarkets, be able to export and the price wldnt be so high EC$10 a pound, people would be able to buy more fish to eat, would be healthier and eat less chicken and be less obese!

Also when those Fishermen go out supposedly to catch fish and disappear you would know because your family and friends would report u missing as soon as u didnt come back when u were supposed to which is at the end of the day! But u only know they missing after 3 or 4 days and they not back yet or when they get shot up in their boats or the police catch them with things that dont look like fish in their boats or as in this case the Cruise Ship pass and pick them up because they were stranded at sea bc their engine fail!

So am asking the authorities to pls look at those things for me soupler/please

I was on the Carnival Valor and saw the boat and rescue myself, as it occurred on the Starboard side, where my stateroom was. They were taking on water and had been lost at sea for 4 days with no food or water after having had engine trouble. They needed immediate help, so that’s what the crew of the ship gave them.

If Dominica have so many fishermen why we struggle to get fish?

If Dominica have so many fishermen why we only hear about them when they get caught by the police?

If Dominica have so many fishermen why they only go out at 3:am and never come back with NOT one fish?

    May 24, 2013

If these guys had good intentions and were not involved in anything illegal, then
this story does not make sense. Here’s why: Most fishermen don’t take their travel documents when they go fishing, cuz they are within Dominica waters. It might be a good idea to do that however in the event you have engine trouble and begin to drift.

In this case what the cruise ship should have done was to contact Dominica port reporting a boat in distress, cuz they are in Dominica waters. What you taking them to Barbados for, of course they don’t have documents cuz their intentions were not to be in Barbados. (giving them the benefit of the doubt here)

I have gone fishing many times way out to sea without documents. Fortunately I have never had engine trouble. I never go without them now though

    • yes sa
      May 24, 2013

The cruise ship was not in route to Dominica so it won’t waste time on the water to alert the Dominican authority, so it will take the people to their next port of callwhich was Barbados. What we need to know is where is the boat registered and why it had two different country nationals onboard?

For one DOES ANY IF THESE FISHERMEN HAVE ANY DOCUMENTATION TO ASCERTAIN THEIR NATIONALITY?

Furthermore, i am certain the Barbadian officials are positive ( and I’m sure they are not wrong) that these guys weren’t fishermen!!!)
In addition, if you are brought to another country as a result of Being rescued at sea, they are not gonna release you to roam the streets of their island/ country.

So here’s what is gonna happen! Barbados authorities are going to check their background, and if that is ok! Either these individuals have funds wired to them so that the police can escort them to the airport so they can go on a flight to their country, or if not, then Dominican authorities will have to go and get the them!!! Verify what fish they were sharing with their Vincentian Brothers.

Just about a fortnight ago, the Barbados Nation carried a story where it was revealed that the RSS / US “eye in the sky” (my words) which track drug runners, are now focusing on the point of loading operation.Even if the load is jettison, the evidence that loading took place is there, and the lab boys could then easily find traces on the vessel.
Leaves one wonders if the Cruise ship did really stumble on this boat.
