Dominicans should demand higher media standards says ACM head

President of the ACM Wesley Gibbings

President of the Association of Caribbean MediaWorkers (ACM), Wesley Gibbings, has said there is a need for the media fraternity in Dominica to join hands and that Dominicans should demand higher standards in journalism.

He was speaking to Ivona Jno- Baptiste Lugay of DBS Radio who was among three representatives from the Dominica Press Corp attending a CAFRA workshop on gender equality in St. Lucia.

“There is an absolute need for the media fraternity to join hands in an effort to ensure that the media plays the kind of role in the Dominican society that it ought to,” Gibbings said. “The people of Dominica of Dominica deserve and should demand higher standards, they deserve and should demand a higher level of cohesiveness in the area of media development.”

He said that such cohesiveness does not negate competition.

“I think there can be media competition, you can have commercial competition because media, by and large, is business so there will be the competitive element, journalists will want to get the scoop, journalists will want to be the first in the news and be better at what they are doing.”

Despite this, Gibbings stated that there is a need for a collective effort and the coming together of journalistic forces in Dominica and the region “to reexamine what is the impact of their work and where the areas that need addressing to strengthen the work that they do.”

In a country where the press and media is not independent the standards would be low. Right now the only media house in Dominica that is independent and impartial is DNO, even though it must be said that Skerrit has ticked them of a few times as well. Dominica is in a very sad state, one man has his dirty hands in everything but the majority is blind to everything that man does just for the sake of a few dollars.

Ok u identified all government controlled media right?

So where is the non government controlled? It shows how bias and blatantly ignorant u are.

But let’s assume cock grow teeth and the government changes and UWP were to win wouldn’t it still be government controlled?

Don’t forget from 1995-2000 there was a government in office and all the media houses u mentioned was existing ok.

And it wasn’t this government who said “ROSIE DOUGLAS WILL NOT HAVE THE LEVERAGE TO SPEAK DBS AGAIN”.

Ask Lennox who said that. He was a member as well.
So when you talking please remember there are many of us will NEVER FORGET the 12th June 1995 to 31st Jan 2000 which was the worse of Dominica’s life In Media etc.

Media houses here needs to understand there is more to m dis than a talk show and play music. There is more to it than politics.
It’s about time they learn to deceminate accurate information and stop giving their views to influence ppl. Good thin we not sot

You must be referring to some of those who comment on DNO. Are you blind to their comments which produce no good suggestions and fruits, nothing anyone could learn from?

We have no national standards. If you criticize they make fun of you and say you are not patriotic or tell you some crap like “so why you doh go and do it better?”. Usually it is the people who cannot do it better or think it is well done who say these kinds of things.

thats exactly what he’s talking about stop tearing down each other and your country in a region where we are not competing globally. Instead focus media on the important issues at hand instead of EMPTY politics against politics just to get readership when in fact election season is loooooooooooong over and you are just feeding on the discontent of lazy readers.

If the narrative is on Business, recovering after a storm, insurance needs, where to obtain supplies, what areas are still recovering what areas are fully recovered, the impact of foreign investments and trade, agriculture and manufacturing tourism and the current impact to small business that support tourism, what businesses are hiring and for what positions…. things that actually affect your readership not just mapwi and macaqwi!

Nobody is tearing down the country, FOOL. When do you get it in your hollow skull that we are criticizing Skerrit and the cabal and not the country.
