Dominicans warned against frolicking in bad weather

Chairman of the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA) Phoenix Belfield has warned Dominicans to avoid frolicking during bad weather systems, saying it is very dangerous.

Recently a video surfaced on social media which showed a young lady being tossed around by the waves associated with the passage of Hurricane Irma near the Douglas Charles Airport in Melville Hall.

The video has gone viral and has been shown on international outlets such as The Weather Channel.

“There is some footage that has been sharing around on social media and you can see persons frolicking in the high seas at the airport, on the outskirts of the airport,” he said. “I want to really reiterate that it is critically important for persons to ensure that this is a time that they are supposed to be protecting themselves, stay indoors and not to be going on a frolicking run outside because it can be terribly dangerous outside.”

According to Belfield the country has suffered a lot from Tropical Storm Erika, “and if Erika has taught us anything [it] is to be proactive, to be preventative because prevention is better than cure.”

He stated also that the DASPA wants to ensure that all necessary safeguards and measures are put in place for minimal damage.

Belfield mentioned that persons traversing the road, especially in the vicinity of the Douglas-Charles Airport, must exercise caution.

“You will notice that because of the high seas that are affecting the airport that the water will be reaching as much as 10-15 feet high and it will come over the wall, so be careful,” he advised.

I agree with you sir, when I saw the video I was so darn mad. This was so stupid and to watch them laughing!
This is no laughing matter as people are losing their lives and all that they own and that means that people have to risk their lives to rescue them if needs be.

Some people do not realize the danger of doing that. What if a huge wave came and washed that woman away?

This woman is rather brave and foolish. She should be arrested for placing herself in such danger. Minister, make it a Law.

I agree with the call for caution. It’s especially important to protect children. There is no earthly reason why kids should be seen on such footage. Let’s think of the message that is being interpreted by the global community.
