Dominica’s resilience inspires CARICOM

A scene from Dominica’s Independence Day celebration on Friday

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is inspired by the example of fortitude and resilience the people of Dominica have shown in the face of adversity, CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said Friday.

Dominica celebrated its 39th Independence Anniversary on 3 November 2017 and the Secretary-General in a congratulatory message stated that no climatic event can conquer the spirit of its people.

The country celebrated its Independence under the theme, Building a Brighter Future Together.

The CARICOM Secretary-General said the theme resonated at a time when Dominica seeks to rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

“The unity and togetherness of the Dominican People will ensure that no climatic event can conquer their spirit,” he stated. “There is no doubt that Dominicans possess the resolve to make the necessary efforts to rebuild the country and in so doing to become an example to the world as the first climate resilient nation. The Caribbean Community fully supports the Government and People of Dominica in the pursuit of this goal.”

A mass public awareness and sensitization program will need to be implemented, yes, so true, but under this Skerrit and his corrupt Labour government we all know that or else this most desirable initiative is doomed to fail –We need to clean up this visionless, corrupt government

There are those who questioned the rational of Dominica celebrating its 39th year of independence. These people were hoping to see the Dominican people in a depressed mood but their dreams were shattered. The resilience of the people is like the spark that ignited the flame. We were knocked down but not knocked out. We will bounce back and we will rebuild a better Dominica.

The late PM Rosie Douglas had a dream/vision of Dominica becoming more closely alinged to Europe through Martinique and Guadeloupe. It is probably fair to say that despite his unrivaled popularity this dream was never really shared by the mass of Dominicans. This was so because the vision – his vision was never truly disseminated among the people. Likewise, whilst the support of the Government, CARICOM, the United Nations and it’s Secretary General, the World Bank and other donors remains crucial to realizing the present vision of building a more resilient Dominica – the Government of Dominica must sooner rather than later begin the process of sharing this vision to all Dominicans and getting their support for the initiative. A mass public awareness and sensitization program will need to be implemented, or else this most desirable initiative is doomed to fail – despite all the good intentions. It cannot be seen as PM Skerrit’s vision, or the Governments vision. It must be ours.
