DOWASCO working on multi-million dollar projects

Three major water projects will be undertaken here this year at a cost of over EC$30 million, DOWASCO’s general manger Bernard Etinoffe has said.

The EC$25 million west coast water project, the construction of the long-awaited Morne Bruce storage tank which will improve water supply to lower Kingshill and to Roseau, and the installation of a filtration system at Antrim will get going with assistance from the Dominica government.

“Government has provided funds for the filtration system, grant funds to DOWASCO from the government of Dominica. We’ve had to borrow funds for the Morne Bruce storage tank granted by the government of Dominica, and the West Coast water project is funded by and large by the EU,” Etinoffe said.

Several other water projects are being looked at, according to Etinoffe. The Delices water project, described as a priority undertaking, is expected to be completed by the end of March, while a water project in Warner “should also be completed by the end of next week”.

“DOWASCO is engaged in a number of project work at this point in time; it promises to be a really very busy year for the company,” Etinoffe has pointed out.

What about water for Shawford? A community that still remains without potable water. That project was supposed to have begun in 2010….but maybe rain water is more reliable than Dowasco.

oh yeah, poor Dominicans have to pay all that money spent on those projects with significant rates on their water supply!!Go back to the good ole days folks, when you all actually took your behinds to the river to wash, bathe, and fill up the plastic container in the yard!!IT would be one less expense on your monthly bills.

Is there any bidding on these projects? I always marvel at the cost of these projects. What is the design cost, material cost, and construction cost? Are we getting these projects done at a competitive price? Is there a location where the public can see a break-down of the cost of those projects?

We need to stop sensationalizing everything. Check naodominica.org. Most of these projects are on the national authorizing officer’s website and are open tender. If you really are interested check it out…you will find the bill of quantities as per your request. If you are just blah-blah..ing then don’t bring up things that you are not really interested in or informed about.

Mr Etinoffe what about the water system in Scott’s Head? We need our water system upgraded. There are more times without water than with water and when we do have water its not drinkable because the presence of Chlorine is so strong. You guys can do better than that. Water is Life.

That water self in Scotts Head just not nice!!! Boy look a old tasting water; that must be the worst kind of water in the whole of Dominica.

I hope DOWASCO taps another source or link Scotts Head to the new West Coast intake when it is completed.

Dowasco seems to be in the spot light a lot these days. Big projects happening, yet, many ppl are on marpin and radio stations complaining about the unavailability of water in their villages. In many cases DOWASCO has no idea why that is the case that alone if a problem even existed. In some cases the water supply is ok, the machinery is ok, but the maintenance persons do not do frequent checks for leaks or blockages.
I can say too that there is a case in Tete Morne where for decades the villagers have been experiencing problem with the water supply. I have heard excuses from, the ppl waste too much water by letting the stand pipes stay open (something which is not true of tete morne), to the tank just too small. Though i am not saying that there are times when the problem isn’t genuine, but for the most part the problem is in the management. The individual who is responsible for ensuring that the water is pumped daily does not always do so and sometimes is late.
It is not a good feeling DOWASCO when the only water you depend on is that from the pipe. You wake up in the morning and cannot use the toilet, you cannot take a shower, you cannot even make a good cup of tea. At nights you come home and the same thing. There is water during the day but guess what you are at work then. Your employees need to keep a detailed log of each and everything they do on a daily basis. that way when i call and ask if there is a problem with the pump or something i can be met with a response that sounds half intelligent.
    Thank you.

Interesting stuff here and I wish Dowasco well this year in their drive to bring better and new water system to all. Another area to consider is that stretch of flat land from the Pond Casse roundabout all the way to Penrice, with the proposed road project and the vast residential property up there it could pay dividends in the long run!
I also want to say thanks to the GOCD for their contribution and more importantly the “EU for funding the West Coast water project” according to the Mr. Etinoffe.
