Eleven non-profit organizations on the island have benefited tremendously from the annual donation of the Dominica Social Security (DSS).

The donation amounted to $30,000.

Organizations which benefited include the Centre where Adolescents Learn to Love and Serve (CALLS), CHANCES, Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities (DAPD), Dominica Cancer Society, Dominica Infirmary, Education Trust Fund, Grotto Home for the Homeless, House of Hope, Mahaut Senior Citizens Home, Northern District Home for the Aged and St Jerome’s Ministry.

Speaking at a presentation ceremony held at the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) building on Tuesday, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the DSS, Anthony Joseph said over the years the company has been making contributions towards the work of a number charitable organizations in Dominica.

He stated this is a part of “the board’s policy of setting aside annually a small percentage of its administrative budget for the sole purpose of supporting the activities of these selective organizations.”

“The DSS is in the business of providing relief mainly in the form of cash benefits to insured persons in times of economic hardship brought about by events, such as illness, accidental injuries, disability, old age and death,” he stated. “Thus through the fulfillment of this noble mandate the DSS is already making a significant contribution to the socio-economic well being of the entire nation.”

He stated further that the donations presented are a small part of the total amount allocated for assisting non-profits organizations and people in need.

“Because whereas these amounts are being directly to particular organizations, additional amount have been provided for general distribution on a case by case basis to groups and individuals across Dominica, towards the national effort in HIV and AIDS prevention as well as for assisting persons who require critical care overseas,” he stated.

Meantime representative of Grotto Home for the Homeless, Lucia Blaize Jones, urged citizens to pay their contributions to the DSS.

“You benefit as well as the less fortunate in our society,” she said.

Representative of the various organizations all received checks from the DSS and also gave thanks for the kind gesture.
