Garbage at Pottersville cleared

The area has been cleared of garbage

A pile of garbage in Pottersville, which residents claimed was uncollected for months, has been cleared.

Residents had expressed frustration over what they said was an eyesore for a long time.

DNO can confirm that the garbage was cleared after the matter was reported on Tuesday.

Collection Manager at the Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC), Shamara Daisy, had warned that the area has not been a garbage collection site for years and residents should refrain from dumping their trash there.

She advised members of the public to be more mindful of garbage collection sites to avoid pollution in their communities.

So prior to the article being written, nobody saw the garbage on the side of the road?

Exactly my point! They had to be publicly shamed to remove the eyesore. I hope that pride for community and respect for the environment will deter people from dumping their waste indiscriminately.

The new bridge should be high enough, creating an underpass so that vehicle can travel up to the Goodwill area, without making a U-turn and going back around, but that will not happen.

The government and its agencies instead of bring proactive, they are reactive. You have to publicly shame them into action. Hope the community and the DSWMC work together to avoid this unhealthy and unsightly recurrence.

I guess the government should have a new slogan… Let make Dominica the first perfect country in the world.. no crime, no unemployment, everything free, just total Utopia.

So are you saying that it is ok for persons to dump rubbish anywhere they want. How can you blame a government for that. How would you you like it if persons in your area start dumping their rubbish next to your home or surrounding area. I guess you won’t.

You are totally misconstrued. That quantity of garbage took months to accumulate to that volume. The relevant authorities must have seen or heard about it. It should have been collected long before and a stern public announcement followed: “Anyone caught dumping garbage in this particularly area will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Citizens should always be civic minded and do nothing to deface their community or cause harm and discomfort to their fellow residents. Garbage should never be dumped on the side of the road. It should be kept in large plastic containers inside one’s yard and put out on a scheduled date of collection by the DSWMC. It is the responsibility of each household to truck the big items such as old stoves, washing machines and refrigerators directly to the landfill. Dominica has a HUGE litter problem. A strong and consistent sensitization drive about the proper disposal of garbage, and against littering, is imperative.

Ibo your point???? Did u read the Solid Waste personnel on this. This is not a normal collection point. As soon as they were apprised of the situation, it was cleared. Why are you always negative? Can’t you see that some persons litter and think it is someone who has to manage their garbage for them. We cleaned our area after Hurricane Maria and we pooled our resources together and got a private truck to take to the landfill area. You know why most of us in our area like to be surrounded by clean environment. We do not depend on others to clean up for us. Like soon some persons would like someone to wipe their … when they use the toilets. That dependency syndrome together with all complaining must stop. So in other words, not a collection point, then they dump their rubbish there… What do you say to this? another point, if you in the Country, don’t you think that residents in some areas especially a lot of guys not doing anything, waiting for someone to clean their yard
