General Nursing Council launches first ever website

Jean Jacob is Chairperson of the General Nursing Council

The General Nursing Council of Dominica has officially launched its first ever website that provides a platform for patients and the public to better access to information.

The website was launched on Friday, July 21st at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and will be available for public use from the end of this month.

Principal Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health, Caesarina Ferrol, said that engaging such method of disseminating information is very useful in this technological age.

“The development of the website should serve as a very useful tool in the dissemination of information, and facilitates the functions of the council through the use of technology,” she said.

Ferrol added that it is her hope the initiative will serve its purpose and that the nurses and the general public will take advantage of this “visionary and innovative development.”

The website, www.dominicanursingcouncil.dm, provides a number of services including; history and composition of the council; the role of the nursing council with regard to management; downloading of application forms for registering as a nurse, renewal of nursing licensure, and application for nursing examinations; list of current licensed and non-licensed nurses; complaint entries for cases of abuse by nurses.

Chairperson of the General Nursing Council, Jean Jacob, said that it was decided that the website be created to improve its efficiency.

“It was felt that the council needed to improve its level of efficiency, and to be more available to its constituents, mainly its nurses and the public. In this regard, the council decided to develop a website which would provide a revenue to address this need,” she said.

She added that as the world is becoming more and more technologically advanced, it was fitting to have the council create a website to “fall in line with what is expected of it.”

“In keeping with this, we have joined a number of other nursing councils around the world, by creating an online presence which will allow us to interact with our stakeholders more efficiently, as well create more visibility for the work which we perform,” Jacob remarked.

Wonderful initiative. What are the ways the nursing council plays to retain nurses now? When a ward has 2 nurses on a shift with 20 + patients. One nurse has to split her self all over, even worst when the little nurse tired and on her day off they still calling her to o come work because is one nurse that working. Hmm., tell me what is the name of this abuse? I was a patient on dawbiney, and Lord bless those nurses, they work very hard, there is no money, no incentive nothing for them, than lack of resources, development of ulcers, kidney problems, fatigue! Trying to make sure everything is done for the patients. I feel sadden by the number of nurses leaving but begin a patient for 2 months I understand completely. If you want to understand a nurse, you need to either become one or be a patient. They go above the call of duty, and go home tired to their family. Ask yourselves why there are so many nurses with broken families?

    Great initiative.
Etiquette/ethics is a big deal and lacking in many nurses that makes those that possess these skills naturally look very bad. Supervision is the biggest deal. No one should sit in a waiting room sick for an hour, and in some cases hours before someone something somebody checks on them; while nurses and or doctors can be heard in adjacent rooms talking away while someone stands a chance of surviving if someone, something, somebody reaches out and simply begin TRIAGE to gage which patient(s) NEEDS to be escalated immediately to save a life. Supervision and EVALUATION (which should be dangled as a carrot) should be the simple NORM to help keep nurses ACCOUNTABLE. Get rid of the ‘job for life attitude’ and you will see great improvement in the health system. But thanks, I will use the web site to be more informed.

There maybe good reason to have a press conference for launching your website http://www.dominicanursingcouncil.dm and is not accessible to the public. However, while you are working on the content, you could have publish the domain so it can be found when you using a search engine.

When I search google for http://www.dominicanursingcouncil.dm or Dominica Nursing Council. You want to know know what I find? Nothing to do with http://www.dominicanursingcouncil.dm and/or Dominica Nursing Council.

You can put “coming soon page” or something like that so at least you have a presence online. You will get more hits when you actually go live.

Please consult your hosting company or the person / company who is designing the wedsite for them to register your domain with a SEO company or publish your domain name online with your hosting company.

    Regards,
