Government temporarily lifts ban on hunting and fishing

The Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division of the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry wishes to inform the general public that the Government of Dominica has approved the temporary lifting of the ban on hunting and fishing in freshwater streams for the period October 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011.

During that period, only licensed hunters and licensed freshwater fishermen may hunt and or fish the following Agouti, Manicou, Crabs and fish freshwater fish to include Crayfish, Mullets, Eels and Ramier.

Due to the recent collapse of the Mathieu Dam fishing is not permitted west of the Mathieu River where it joins with the Layou River.

The general public is reminded that it is an offense under the Forestry & Wildlife Act to hunt or fish in freshwater streams without a valid license, and that the hunting of all other species of animal, including the Mountain Chicken, all Birds, and Iguanas is strictly prohibited.

The public is therefore advised that beginning October 6th 2011, hunting and fishing licenses may be purchased at the office of the Forestry & Wildlife Division on the Windsor Park link road, and at the Sub-Treasuries in Portsmouth and Marigot.

Please assist the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division in the management of the Country’s natural resources.

For further information please contact the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division at Tel. 266- 5863/5852.

Please loving citizens of Dominica, the efforts of the Forestry division should be respected as if you all are so concerned about your country and its natural resources that you all should know the cries that exist in the Caribbean region where most of the other islands only have sea/ocean fishing meaning little or no terrestrial wildlife or freshwater fish, while we have genuine wildlife hunting n fishing because they exist on island. apprciate the fact that every year locals/visitors (licenced) can enjoy the fruits of Natural Resource Management, so is not to restrict people but to but to protect what the World is loosing out on…good clean wildlife habitats housing healthy productive wildlife species. so just get the licence when possible and be honorable to seeing that next year your sons and daughters can apprciate what many others won’t. ask our neighboring french islands, they wish they had what we have running and flying around ok…saying a prayer for Waitukubuli’s Naturalness

Maybe the time u called, the Department was still waiting to get the OK, the approval, from Government. I dont think it was any hush-hush. But they have to wait for approval before the cann announce the opening of the season.

DNO, the part about the prohibition of hunting of “all birds” shoyuld have read ALL BIRDS OTHER THAN THE RAMMIER.

Also, the Forestry & Wildlife Division and Government should have extended the “no-fishing” zone on the lower section of Layou River to at least one mile upstream of where the Matthieu River meets the Layou River, if the reason given is to allow the Layou to be restocked with koko, milay, crayfish and the like.
