Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has announced that government will be moving to acquire land for a road that will bypass the Canefield Cliff.
This as numerous landslides and rock falls have posed a danger to the motoring public. The latest incident took place on Sunday when a huge portion of rocks fell on the road. No one was hurt in the incident but there have been numerous complaints on the matter.
Addressing a government consultation on Monday, Skerrit said he has discussed the matter with the Leader of the Opposition and action will be taken and a bypass will be created in Morne Daniel.
“We will be moving in the cabinet tomorrow to compulsory acquire the lands to create the bypass at Morne Daniel with immediate action and to declare this road a public road so as to mitigate against the landslides,” he said.
Skerrit stated that the government is in consultation with French authorities who will be coming to Dominica next week to advise on slope stabilization in different parts of the island.
“This is one area that we will be seeking their advice on what can we do to mitigate against it,” he stated. “But you recognize that it is very hollow and this has not only come down during the rainy time even in hot sun it has eroded.”
He said there has been great anxiety on the matter and the slides have been inching into Morne Daniel and homes of residents.
“So we will be moving with the bypass,” Skerrit remarked. “There is some issue with a landowner who has blocked that section but we will move to surveyors to acquire this land by a cabinet decision tomorrow and to create that access.”
WE dont want that road to take the same time as ROSALIE TO PITETSUFERE ROAD BARBYE
what about us in Elmshall? you waiting for people to die first? at least give us our bridge back, it will not cost 18 million.
Why not extend the road into the sea. This may help.
Out of the frying pan into the fire… the ocean is unrelenting, especially during storms. The Bypass road is better idea. they can use that canefeild stretch to create a RACE TRACK!
thats an idea but out of the frying pan into the fire… the ocean is unrelenting, especially during storms. The Bypass road is better idea. they can use that canefeild stretch to create a RACE TRACK!
Take all that rock from the cliff to Melville Hall airport dump it into the ocean at the east end of the airport runway and extend the runway into the ocean so that jet aircraft 757 can land safely extend the runway by another 1000 feet,. A vehicle tunnel can be built under the runway.
good idea but imagine how much it would cost to move millions of tons of rock from Roseau to Marigot… rocks from the melville hall river from dredging would be better.
this is so funny. i feel bad for us as a nation. what is wrong with us really? this is like saying, tom, you will fall, fix yourself. tom looks at you and ignores you. TOM! fix yourself, you will fall. Tom does the same thing. Tom why dont you fix yourself before you fall and hurt yourself. Still nothing. Then tom falls hurts himself and expects everyone to run to his aid feeling sorry for him. this country is too free and we take no heed to any dangers waiting to happen. At the bottom of the goodwill back-road is another huge disaster waiting to happen. Antrim is another. we revel is nonsense mediocre patch work. The country is a mess!!! we dont even maintain our roads and highways to even regularly cut the bush growing onto it or even beautify them and we call ourselves the nature isle. We will have to call ourselves the climate isle because the climate is having its way with our blunders.
this happens in every country, its a developing nation.
The problem can be solved by consulting with Dutch engineers, who are the best in the world. There is no need to build a road passing through Morne Daniel, with such high elevation.
We should take the cliff and push it somewhere else —>
Strange proposition considering that cutting into Morne Daniel which is higher elevation is not going to solve the problem of slides. They need to put that heavy gage wire mesh that is put on rocky areas where there is a problem with rocks falling down into the road on the cliff to secure the hillside.
The heavy mesh wire is used all over the French Antilles.
Not just there, in the US, Canada, Europe, south and Central America, Cuba etc. we act like these things are not for us and it is absurd to even think of using it here. but when we travel we marvel at the use of simple science and technology.
Make sure they pass the road right next to the Chinese residential house at Morne Daniel and down the valley to WavinCork. LOL!
Ya you living Morne Daniel now i hear you buy de house so you want nice road. wicked!
His farm is up there too. Non the less i would HATE to see so much traffic passing though my area even though it may be the only alternative. In truth we have been lucky as we love to rely on one road in one road out mentality. Same for Roseau Valley. Same to go South
Was it not a Caribbean construction company which build some roadway tunnels through the hills in St Lucia?

And St. Kitts as well. but that is to advanced for dominica to even fathom
Dominica was one of the first Islands in the Caribbean to have tunnels… there was a underground tunnel from Fort Young Hotel to Morne Bruce… know your history!
All that needs to be done in Dominica is cut deep into the cliffs reclaimed land and move the road more out into the see. Simple. Everywhere is reclaiming land except Dominica. There are more than enough mountain of tarish to build another Dominica.
exactly all that dirt and soil that come down with Maria they can even expand Canefield airport… you know the airport in Grenada was built on the sea….
@ derp i have been to Grenada many times to see my friends, and the airport you talking about was not build on the sea it’s located on a peninsula if you talking about Maurice Bishop international airport missing the sea.
Is this near the entrance to the Humming Bird Hotel?
No, closer to town/Domlec.
Yes it is. Just After Lyndhurst Funeral Home
The safety of the people is of paramount importance. No delays! Move with alacrity to remedy the precarious situation.
it a big job’bring the cliff back ‘
Lol opposition working with governement. …. lol no election needed again… no more general election .. we don’t need another government because the opposition has joined the government in power..
Either Morne Daniel or land reclamation
What about building bridges in the sea or even tunnels?
Bright idea, but where will the money come from?
Just a question….what about creating a back wall? Since it seems like the new road will only be a bypass and not mandatory.
There are old road plans which was sideline because of politics look for them.
Government need to address themselves!
The Right thing to do.
