Gov’t to embark on housing project in Roseau

Those who attended the meeting

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed that his government will acquire land very soon for the construction of 60 apartment units for residents of Roseau.

He made that remark while addressing a Town Hall meeting for residents of the Roseau Central held at the Baracoon Building last week.

“I will say to you this evening, the residents of Roseau that we have air marked another 60 units to be constructed on Kennedy Avenue around the Financial Centre,” he said. “So the government will acquire land very soon and will erect 60 apartment units that will go towards the residents of Roseau.”

He continued, “It is something we have to look at and we believe that with the construction of the apartment units we will be able to address a number of your challenges in that respect.”

The Prime Minister noted that on the ground floor of the complex, commercial space will be made available and be rented out to a number of the small businesses in Roseau that are subjected to very high monthly rents and sometimes cannot see their way.

“So a lot of the young people who are doing the hair and nails, and the pedicure and the manicure who have little shops in the city, we will provide adequate accommodation for you at a highly concessionary monthly rental,” Skerrit stated.

It is a project to look forward to constructing for the needy, those who can ill-afford to rent expensive housing and stores. It will also beautify Roseau.

After almost two decades of Skerrit leadership how many dominicans can trully claim to be better off? Teachers salaries back then was 1500 for primary school. Its still the same today. House rent back then was like 400, 500 when last did you see a decent house available for that price? By his own admission when skerrit entered the political arena he could not even afford his first suit on his teachers salary but today he allegedly had millions in off shore account. Guess we shoukd say better late than never for the crumbs he is now throwing after bringing the country to its knees under his leadership. Look at the economy and look at skerrits assets and ask yourself who benefitted from CBI? Dominicans are just as guilty because they continued to put love for someone who doesnt care about them above love for country and indeed love for their children and themselves. How could you all continue to defend someone who gave your children no opportunities while selling your resources?

So when you build those apartments , who gonna pay there light, there water, buy there propane, and so on , are they gonna live for free ? what is your plan in getting the Dominicans tax payers money back from the people living in those apartment Skerro ?. you are already giving free cement galvanize blocks< and windows, what is wrong with you Skerro ? you are giving the store away, just because you get caught in that scandal? you just cant buy your self out of this , create jobs and the people will build there own houses . Sir just step aside , and let us take the helm of the ship , cus it is sinking bad under your captain ship, Sadam Hussian P .R.O officer Tarik Azies told the Iraqi people during the American invasion that the American solders had not left America, When they was already at there door step , keep on listening to Tony Astaphan .

Pathetic, Roosevelt Skerrit. This is not the first time the DLP is making this promise. When this was first made some yeas ago, I and my sisters applied to the Housing Division. More than eight years later, nothing has materalised. The man Skerrit is just recycling promises, especially when he feels threatened.

I realize that the government is going on a spending binge. Is this genuine or is it just a strategy to deflect people’s minds from the current state of affairs concerning the Diplomatic Passport debacle? Why at this time there is a flurry of activities to do the citizens well? All the new projects may be helpful in some way but the sudden haste smacks at political shenanigans. When politicians find themselves in real difficult, they orchestrate ways of allaying the concerns and animus of the citizens usually by using the public purse unreservedly.

Ok Skerrit, all that remains is to actually do it. Let’s wait!..But as congested as Roseau is already, try and put in some parking space too, if it is that there is any plan really..

60 apartments next to the Financial Center in Roseau..let that sink in town and country planning..

  23. D Slave master @ the Baracoon?
    March 19, 2017

First I will not pay any attention to what Skerrit says because he behaves like a slave master and confirmed his behavior by rushing to host a meeting in no other place than at the “Baracoon building”, in an effort to hurt an important meeting public officers were having. Skerrit, what I saw in terms of attendance at the public building confirms that the people of Dominica are NO LONGER afraid of him because they realize his days are numbered. What we saw at the during the UWP / DFP meeting on February 7, what we saw last week during the PSU meeting and what we will be seeing on March 30 is sign that Dominicans have him and his DLP party on the run to Mercury and it is just a matter of time before he finds the EXIT door. Skerrit Must GO! How long Not too long folks. I say less than two months away as soon as the Passover meal is taken

  25. Ask Pluto
    March 19, 2017

It’s going to take more than 60 apartments for the DLP to win any of the Roseau seats. Maybe they need to build 300 apartments, an international airport, a modern sea port, duty free port’ all in the Roseau Central area to be competitive. Oh, I forgot to say a very good candidate sure not one like Tonge, the one dollar minister, Charlo or the other one that was for all of us last election. If Skerrit say he powerful tell him to send Ricky to run in Vielle case and he Skerrit run in Roseau Central so we could teach him a good lesson. In fact let me not waste my time talking about election because I know for fact that Skerrit will be out before next election even if he calls it next month. He better resign or face the embarrassment of either being fired or cause Trump to come to visit him right here in Dominica

    • Dominica
      March 20, 2017

Skerrit needs to remember than when Mamo built the beautiful bayfront she lost elections. That was the most shocking news to her. So Skerrit is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to Roseau Central. If he builds he is in trouble, if he continues to give empty promises he still looses. So long you promising us lovely sidewalks and underground power lines….just do it!!! It will be your legacy. But remember we will still vote you out. You need to Go!!!

Well PM,did you stayed away from telling us what is the source of FUNDING?
If it is CBI,i find you to be extremely UNGRATEFUL not to have thanked HONOURABLE LENNOX LINTON…He together with the Panama Papers are the reasons why CBI money is being spent in Dominica…You ran and hide to dodge the CBS 60minutes interview..Never know that a 2kilometers tall man 2000m,20000cm,could hide so well undetected…But honourable Linton and Gaston Brown did not run away…The result is that CBI money is now being spent on island….THANK YOU HONLOURABLE LINTON!!! I yearn for the day when instead of giving cash to DLP supporters CBI money will be used to create sustainable jobs particularly for the youths. But again if you create jobs, you view it as undermining your re election legacy?Shame on you and the other no brainers in your gang to have abandoned the youths of this country to such a sickening extent!!!Thats why i will continue to say:::SKERRIT MUST GO!!! SKERRIT MUST GO!!! SKERRIT MUST GO!

      March 20, 2017

Well it is actually a good thing… but do you think it’s for free??? And yes complain about a small salary, if Labour was indeed a good governing political party the economy would be growing, salaries would increase and unemployment rate would be decreasing….but instead we as Dominicans are to sit by the way sides for handouts, and pray that the good lord Skerro sees it fit to do something in our community and to give hundreds of thousands to our village council, so we could then ONCE AGAIN GO BEGGING FOR HELP!!!

dominica is in a really bad state my people
