Health Minister wants less negative talk about PMH

Darroux said good things are happening at PMH

Health Minister, Dr. Kenneth Darroux, has appealed to health care providers to say more positive things about the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

He was speaking at an award function at the institution on Wednesday, following a visit by the President of Dominica, His Excellency Charles Savarin.

“Too often times we hear too much of the negative things and when the positive things happen, we need to speak out about them and I think sometimes the responsibility is yours, the health care providers,” he said.

Darroux gave the example of a woman from Tete Morne, who, he said, was in the ICU and who probably was expected to die. However, she has made a remarkable comeback.

“I saw her on Glover Ward, talking to me bright, telling me she wants to go home to eat her smoked meat. and whatever the case may be, for Christmas,” he noted. “And I think somebody, part of the visiting party, mentioned to her that people need to speak about these things.”

Darroux said too many times people concentrate on the negative things that are being said out there.

“Often time we are the ones who contribute towards a lot of the negativity that is being said out there,” he said. “So when these positive things happen, we need to go out there. The same way we can message Matt in the Morning or other talk show host to give them, feed them, the bad things, I think when these good things happen, we should feel from within to also go out there and speak about the good things that are happening at PMH.”

Cruise ship visitors must by law have a warning when visiting our nature island that if anything serious (or not so serious happens to them) and they have the misfortune of having to attend the PHM, there is a 99% chance that they will either lose a leg, or die.

    I think that’s fair.

There go the UWP supporters. It is as evident as daylight. We do not expect you to say anything better. This is why supporters of the Labour Party really should not pay you any attention because you are, as always, biased. You are too set in your critical ways. Despite of your criticisms, you are not always correct. You are merely making such statements and cannot help your concrete and consistent ways of criticizing.
Tell us, if it were Lennox Linton whom you support, would you be so critical? I bet not. Know that he would not be better. May you find out some day to your disappointment.

A true account of a recent event as the PMH.

A young doctor was on emergency duties at the PMH when a man was brought in. The doctor examined the man and found that his heart, stomach and backbone were missing and also half the man’s brain had totally gone.

The shocked doctor when to his SMO’s office and explained what he had found as asked for guidance. The SMO asked whether the man was still mobile and was able to talk. The young doctor explained that the man was indeed mobile and was apparently lucid although what he said was 100% inaccurate most of the time.

The SMO said: ‘OK, just let him go, everything is fine’. The doctor said: “Are you not going to see him at least? The SMO responded: ” No need, he has no guts, half a brain, is heartless and talks a lot of bul. He is a politician, perfectly normal state for these guys. Let him go!”.

If you were in their position you would do the same. Furthermore, if you are in D/ca and you have a medical problem also got into an accident which cannot be treated in D/ca, you could get help from the government to fly you out for medical treatment. Some D/cans have received it. Therefore, cease your negativity. Some of you lack appreciation. One day some people will pay for their words, their negativity. Try changing your negative tone. It will do you well.

It takes a lot to get me to this place, and lord knows .
What is wrong with our health system ? Everyone who goes to casualty at the Princess Margaret Hospital complains but yet know one does a thing… you can’t ask a question the doctors and nurses get offended and angry most time common sense beats education . Last night the 14th December 2016 . I finally gave up on our nurses and doctors up there , if you people can’t do the job or just doing it for the money quit or go find another profession , these so call doctors and nurses needs to be trained in all areas. Get to know the equipment that you all are working with leave you’ll nasty attitude at the door , dress properly , take out the make- up and false hair , get off that high horse and welcome the people to casualty , it is for healers and sick people. We already know what you all professions are just do the dam job. Some of you all wouldn’t be doctors if it wasn’t for Cuba. Go and do refreshers. CPD’S, Dealing with…

Hopefully, with the new hospital, all this will be rectified.
A friend informed me her sister was at a hospital awaiting an operation. She was seven days in a hall before she could be attended to. There was a cloth partition around her. That is where she was fed, etc. I would say this is also humiliating. She was not the only one I heard on the news of this complaint that the hospital does not have enough room for all the patients. This is in Canada! We have worst problems here for a big country/city. Patients also die in the hospitals. I feel when the time comes to die we will die.
From reading certain comments, some Dominicans are just too consistently negative and especially when it pertains to the government. This does not make for a happy, peaceful life and conversation.
      Try to be positive.

Mr Minster, only when people talk can change come about. You cited one success story; I alone know of many sad terrible stories. Get all your bloody act together and positive things will be said. Things have not changed in years at that hospital. The best health care for citizens is a foundamental right not a priviledge. The majority of Dominicans cannot fly out of Dominica for medical care the way you all can do. On a government’s list of top priorities should be Health, Education, etc.

A few years ago, I saw a strong able bodied young man die a slow death at the PMH. He fell from a tree, on the head. When he arrived at PHM, he could still speak and recognize his family and friends. He spent 10 days on the ward with bleeding in the brain; no medical assistance, nothing. His family fought to get him to Guadeloupe, chasing after the chief consultant for a medical report which he never gave to the family.

He was not related to me by blood, but it hurt me beyond words.
    He died.

Well well…. Dr. Darroux I heard you just fought tooth and nail for the PM and the government of Dominica to send your sick father next door for medical treatment…… but we must sing praises of the PMH and accept the lack of basic medical equipment and treatments?

    • Yes, the Cubans and Chines are not capable of treating them, and their relatives in the butcher shop therefore they must find some money out of the government treasury to send their mother, father, and siblings out of the country to get proper treatment.

The poor, of our country are subjected to those so called doctors who are not even capable of treating a dog. Those who are lucky to go in and occasionally come out are left with either the same problem, or find themselves worst off than when they went in.

I would like that guy to tell Dominicans when last he or Skerrit, or any of the puppets in Skerrit’s circus had a headache, and went to the Butcher shop; the PMH and took a pill anyone of the quacks prescribed to them. If Skerrit and any of the clown in his circus life depended on any doctor ant the PMH; they would rather die than go to that hospital! oui!

    December 15, 2016

With respect Dr. Darroux, people as a rule go to hospital not because they are cheerful, healthy and with the aim to praise governments. Their expectations are to find relieve and get better, mostly positive expectations. So if the medical services perform as is expected that would be normal, and praise is only due where those expectations are exceeded. Equally we need to highlight poor performance and outright failures because that is an area that needs most attention, especially where it concerns people’s health and lives. Criticism should not always be seen as negative but as an aid and reminder to keep our eyes on the ball ans strive for continuous improvement.

I had the opportunity to observe the PMH staff at work in November when I took my friend there. I was very impressed. But noticed that at A&E there is still a manual booking in system with lots of paperwork. Surely a computerised network system is essential for the efficient functioning of the hospital. This should be looked at.

Put some NEP computer trained people on it rather than have them work free for some of our business houses ,paid for by government, increasing profits for indivi.uals and distorting competition. 35. Darroux, if you wish to get a positive feedback on that butcher shop where more people comes out dead than heal; you need to do something about the Cuban and Chines quacks who’s malpractice talant is simply screwing up the life’s of our people.

Guy; he who feels it knows it; knows it! I feel it, because there quite a few of my relatives who went there for simply medical treatment, and came out dead! The most recent one is my niece who bleed to death due to internal bleeding from injuries she sustained to her head, by been beaten by a criminal. Rather than keeping her in the butcher shop for overnight observation, and guarded; four times she went to that place, and was sent home by your the quacks where she died from the injuries!

Prior to her the first victim , a nephew of fell off a truck and sustained injuries to one of his rotator-cuff, not even that the quacks could treat, and so his hand withered away! Shut up and find something constructive to talk about, nobody need to…

The day. Don’t get me wrong there are some very considerate and kind nurses but others are just heartless. This issue of having only one doctor on call is ridiculous! This one doctor has to attend to all these patients. At the event of emergencies and the recent flu outbreak, the hospital was packed. With so many persons like it was a wck jam or something. Yet how many doctors? No medications at hand. A poor person has has to look into going by bullseye to get medication- that same money they would have to use on their meal or children. so their money is to sewo and buy nice clothes and shoes, the refuse to pay the $5.00 foe medication. the pharmacy at PMH should only be for IN-Ward patients. everyone else should go to the PRIVATE pharmacies.

    • We are not talking about nurses.

Nurses do not diagnose, or prescribe medication to patients, they can only do what the treating doctor wrote on the patient’s chart to do, they can only give the medication the doctor proscribes and in what dosage. If the doctor proscribes a 20 mg pill to be taken three times per day, the nurse must follow the doctor’s directive right or wrong!

You need to understand if the treating doctor missed -diagnose the patient, whatever treatment he/she recommends will not work because they will be treating the wrong illness, and that is the cause of so many people loosing their life in the PMH.

The incompetents of the quacks who do not know what the hell they are doing is the problem, so no matter how nice is a nurse the individual niceness will not save a life.

So tell us the positive things that are happening at Princess Margret Hospital to talk about! When a patient can’t get a bandage or tablets but the pharmacies in Roseau have them , what do you want us to say?
First of all I think it is time to change the name to something more Dominican. Dominica General Hospital is ok for me.

Darroux you are speaking rubbish. It conditions at the hospital are deplorable and often times a hazzard, you don’t expect them to talk about it.
Before you and your bunch have a “Boe boe” you all take a private plane to wherever. So shut up.

Actually I spent 5 days there and was pleasantly surprised. Very clean. Most staff were pleasant and all helped as they could. The biggest issue I had was too many patients phone ringing in my ears…. lol

Wow!!! Dr. Darroux am certain that you are aware in every facet of life people need correction, and sometimes because of stubborn behavior a verbal reprimand or even physical. Well, with the culture of secrecy in Dominica, how else do you propose making the medical professionals know they need to constantly work with vigilance or the government provide them with the facility, equipment and training to dispense the care we deserve? Yes we need to highlight any institution success, but with the current state of affairs it seem like the proverbial wipe has to be cracked to get government to do things or respond. It is my belief that most Dominicans understand that the medical professionals need help and are possibly happy for the pressure being exerted on government to provide them with the requisite assistance. After all you being a medical doctor are not too far removed from what is going on and given that you are on the policy side aka government side has to shore up your ministry. Ok!

If the PM and his wife refuse to have their kids born at the same hospital it is certainly not a flag bearing statement by the leader of the country and his wife. Action is much louder than words Darroux.
We know that the DLP has mastered the art of illusion and have manage to get the people to sing some thing happening even while their backs are breaking.

      @lang mama,
Most Dominicans are so “mal palant”, while most of our healthcare workers have no regard for patient confidentiality. Why then should the PM’s wife have her kids at PMH, thus risking the possibility that before she even lies on the bed, all Dominicans would already have knowledge of what her private parts look like with maybe even photos? Hundreds of Dominican women have their children in the US annually and they the parents, are not even US citizens. Mrs. Skerrit is a US citizen and can do likewise since as I write, the majority of the young kids we have running around Dominica already have US passports from since they were two weeks old.

They deliberately go to the US to have their babies so that their children could be US citizens which is an advantage for them in future. It is taking advantage of an opportunity. Yet some of these complain about the PM and his wife and the PMH. I think the President elect Donald Trump will change this someday.

I am not adding any thing to what you have said because exactly what you are saying I have said it before over and over…
