Heavy rain causes havoc in south east

La Ronde bypass on Friday morning

Heavy rain associated with a tropical wave which is now affecting Dominica has washed away the La Ronde bypass, affected the Sari Sari Bridge and has cut off the community of La Plaine.

MP for the La Plaine Constituency, Petter Saint Jean, confirmed that the La Ronde bypass area now impassable.

“So the commuters from La Ronde, Delice and Boetica are not able to get across the La Ronde bridge crossing,” he said.

He said the Sari Sari area was also affected.

“Also in the Sari Sari area, that is the central bridge in La Plaine – on entering La Plaine from north and south we have two bridges, and we have one between those two and that is the Sari Sari Bridge,” he explained. “The Sari Sari Bridge which was seriously compromised during the passage of Maria, is also cut off at this moment. The northern end of the bridge has been completely washed away.”

He said commuter cannot get from La Plaine to Casse O Gowrie and the Morne Jaune area.

“It has created again a situation for us where La Plaine is completely cut off both on the north and southern ends,” Saint Jean said.

I commiserate with the residents in these communities who have been negatively impacted by the damages to the roads and bridges caused by the inclement weather. Let’s hope that when these structures are repaired they will be climate resilient. The government needs to pay particular attention to roads, bridges and housing. At this time also, my concern is for all those brothers and sisters with inadequate roofing. I hope, by some means, you will manage to prevent yourselves from getting soaked. God bless!

A resilient bridge, road, and village; Petter and Roosevelt rebuild to replace what is left! Surprisingly that the only resilient country in the world even a small amount rain washed away a resilient bridge and road!

There is nothing a human can build that water cannot destroy, by washing it away!

To me, the bridge is lower than the road and not much clearance under the bridge for debris to pass through. What do one expect.

I am a concerned resident from the east. My children have to travel from Delices to Roseau to go to school. It takes now 2 hours back and forth and when it is raining they cant go. Petter St. Jean as the Parl Rep for the east it is your responsibility to look after the constituency.Have you done that Mr. St.Jean? We are back to the situation when people use to say we are coming from ouvert in the 60’s . I honestly think that something needs to be done.

Really!!!!!!!!!. Petite Savanne people can now reach their homes passing through Grand Bay and people from Delices Boetica and laplaine are cut off. Wouldn’t it make sense to erect a small bridge at petite savanne in case someone in the area get sick so they can get to Roseau Isn’t it lamentable that residents from laplaine to Delices are completely cut off from the rest of Dominica. Just my two sense.

Now Petter and Skerritt my question to you guys is where is the resilience you bragged about less than a year ago? Knowing that Dominica and the South East is prone to the ravages of nature and we are in the hurricane season, where is the vision? So now you inept guys can go with your outstretched hands to the international community and beg some more. Clarence Christian says that money is no problem but this shows that a lack of smarts
Is the problem. When will they ever learn?

We blame people when they say we cannot learn. I think parrots a wiser. Year after year for past few years any time it rains rivers washing away bridges, yet like fools we build back even worst than ones before and we act suprised that it happened again. Dominica must be an experiment in stupidity. What i am looking at is an obstruction to stream flow and i would not insult bridges. Its like a broken record that replays every hurricane season. What a place!!!

      June 23, 2018

Sam, why do you think the PM appears in person to give handouts to his handpicked people. It’s a form of enticement to get votes. Sturdy bridges, durable roads, dredging of the rivers, resilient buildings, a robust economy, negligible unemployment and societal cohesion are of little concern to this indolent, unserious regime. What the Misleader in Chief and his cronies do best, is to use DBS and other friendly media outlets, to accuse members of the opposition of things that are remotely believable, hoping to soil their character. It’s all about winning the next election while the country remains bedeviled with a plethora of problems. Sadly, the government has proven itself to be incapable of thinking its way out of this stalemate.
