Hunting and fishing season declared open

hunting and fishingThe annual open season for hunting and fishing in Dominica has been declared and approved by the Cabinet of Dominica.

Forest Officer, Stephen Durand, told reporters that effective Friday October 04th, 2013, licensed hunters and freshwater fishermen are free to hunt and fish.

“Effective today Friday, people are allowed to hunt or fish. To do this I want to tell the public that you need to have a valid hunting and fishing licence. The law requires that everybody above 14 years who wish to be a member of a hunting or fishing party need to have a valid hunting or fishing licence,” stated Durand.

According to the forest officer, the hunting license costs $25 while the fishing licence costs $15.

He said both licences are being issued at the Forestry, wildlife and Parks office in Roseau or the sub- treasuries located at Portsmouth and Marigot.

He noted that the hunting and fishing season will remain open until December, 2013.

Durand said people wishing to export Dominica’s wildlife must obtain a valid export license from the office of the Director of Forestry.

“Persons who are interested in travelling with wildlife or people who want to export wildlife will be required to have a permit. This year the permit cost ten dollars. Anyone who is interested in taking wildlife out of Dominica to the US or any other country need to come and get a permit issued to them by the Director of Forestry” he pointed out.

The Forestry and Wildlife division is cautioning the travelling public that the exportation or attempts to export wildlife from the state without a valid export license, is a violation of the Forestry and Wildlife Act and is in fact punishable upon conviction by a fine and or imprisonment.

For some the season was never closed cause they were receiving their wild life at ease but to be warned is to be prepared to pay if those concern are caught. The penalties for offenders are too laxed and should be increased to send a real message that the country is serious when some blatantly break the Law.
