The Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division of the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries wishes to inform the general public that the Government of Dominica has approved the temporary lifting of the ban on hunting and fishing in freshwater streams for the period October 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016.

During that period, licensed hunters and licensed freshwater fishermen may hunt Crabs, Freshwater species (to include Crayfish, Mullets, Shrimps and Freshwater Crabs), Agouti, Manicou and Rammier only.

The general public is reminded that it is an offence under the Forestry & Wildlife Act to hunt or fish in freshwater streams without a valid licence, and that the hunting of all other species of animal, including the Mountain Chicken, all Birds, and Iguanas is strictly prohibited.

The travelling public is further informed that the exportation or attempts to export wildlife from the state without a valid export license issued at the office of the Director of Forestry is a violation of the Forestry and Wildlife Act and is punishable upon conviction by a fine and or imprisonment.

The public is therefore advised that with immediate effect hunting and fishing licenses may be purchased at the office of the Forestry & Wildlife Division on the Windsor Park link road, and at the Sub-Treasuries in Portsmouth and Marigot.

Please assist the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division in the management and sustainable use of the natural resources.

This time, DNO posted a less ferocious one.
This is the age of Internet. The first time I saw a picture of one was on DNO. I would not knock it (as the saying) for I know the meat is edible.
Canned meat is eaten. Do we know what is in them? There is a certain country I will not purchase canned meat from. I know what I know as read on a T.O. local newspaper. It turned me off so much that I will purchase nothing which originates from that country. In fact, these days I have my qualms about eating canned meat.
If I have a choice, I will settle for the agouti, manicou, shrimps, crabs, crayfish and mullets.
There are some who will say due to their religious beliefs/teachings they will not eat pork. If there is one meat I love is pork. I remember the taste from Dominica.
Whatever is edible that my ancestors/forefathers/mothers ate I will eat. Clean, season them well and cook them well.
Happy hunting, cooking and eating!

Every body is free to think the way they wish to ,but common sense is better than nonsense …Every animal has its own special smell, the opossum smell is strong it is a fact;but so is the smell of all other living creature ;as long as you are against it you will find that it has all the faults on earth….If we have to think of what wild animals eat we will become vegetarian. The fresh water prawns eat dead animals ,faeces ,plants and whatever more they find. Those criticizing the “manicou” are quite happy to eat chicken, turky wings, beef,,corned beef etc coming from abroad. The chicken, turkey eat dead sheep and are injected with chemicals which are now preventing antibiotics that humans take to be effective. The cows were given the same dead sheep and dead cows which affected humans and scientists said that it is due to what they eat many people got mad cow illness .Tastes and colours can’t be argued ;it is like when some men call open gay men gays when they themselves are secret…

If we think of it, vegetables are grown in the ground. Consider their nourishment. It is not only sunlight. So we would not eat or drink anything.
A few years ago I heard a US man drank only water because he did not trust eating anything. He eventually died.

These hunters need to stay off of people’s private land. The govt. should have designated govt. land for them to hunt on. As usual, there is no enforcement of much of anything in DA.

Manicous are delicious. Get one, smoke him, cook him with some garlic and pepper sauce, get your yams and dasheen ready with a little bit of rice, then go to heaven!

Glad to know that we can eat all what Ma Pampo and all the other centenarians keep telling us that is what they ate to live so long albeit we only have three months to enjoy it whereas they ate the wildlife for so much longer. All natural foods are so much healthier we need to extend the hunting season which use to go from september to february.

The manicou in DA gets a bad name because it looks undesirable . It should not be compared with the ones in the US that feed on garbage . Most manicous in DA are found in the interior and feed on plants . In fact you will not find much roadkill of this animal in DA .

I have always wondered why so many of these press releases are issued the day before the event. Sometimes they issue the release on the same day of the event.

How about issuing it a month before with a follow up the week before. That way yo can get information out there that allows people to plan ahead?

    Just asking!

 It never made anyone sick nor killed them.
Consider in the ancient days that is what was available. The ancestors ate them or the natives.
Ask the Caribs, as they were called in those days, if they ate them..
A good seasoned broth with curry sounds delicious.
I cannot remember eating anyone of these, agouti and manicou.
I love crab backs. My mother made delicious ones. Makes me feel for some.
How about frogs legs – mountain chicken? Some people would catch them, clean them and sell them. I have eaten them. They make a delicious soup.
Last but not least, try the agouti and manicou you may love them.
Let me further inform you. It is stated that West Indians look ten years younger than their age. This may account, one of the reasons due to their youthfulness, good health, some longevity.

 You made me laugh. Looking at it does not appear palatable.
It is local food/meat. .
Today we have internet. In those days we did not. How many people in those days saw a live agouti and a manicou or just one for that matter? Yet they ate the meat and enjoyed it.
Only the hunters catch them, kill them, clean and sell them. They are eagerly bought, cooked and eaten.
Keep in mind not everyone hunts them. Some would roast them after they were cleaned. However, when they are cleaned and sold, the meat would be delicious when cooked.
      Same as mountain chicken.
Do you like rabbit meat? Is there not an annual Rabbit Festival in D/ca? Some people will say, be it jokingly, if you have never eaten the meat you are not living and are missing out on something edible and delicious.
As an afterthought, provisions, herbs, are grown in the ground. They are called root vegetables, etc.
Just trying to make a point.
