Hurricane committee retires the name “Irene” from list of Atlantic storms

Aeriel view of Hurricane Irene in 2011

The name “Irene” has been retired from the official list of names for Atlantic tropical storms following the destruction caused by its namesake hurricane in August 2011.

The decision was made by the hurricane committee for the Americas, which is part of the World Meteorological Office (WMO), during its recent annual meeting.

WMO spokesperson Claire Nullis said Hurricane Irene killed nearly 50 people in the eastern United States and the Caribbean:

“Irene was directly responsible for 49 deaths, including six in the US, and flood losses and other damage in the US was estimated at $15.8 billion.”

Nullis said hurricane names rotate on a six-year basis, and the name “Irma” will replace “Irene”.

Irene was destructive. I like the name Irma. I know a few people whose name is Irma and they are all nice people. Let us hope that hurricane Irma will be a docile one. :)
We can say, “Irene goodbye, Irene.”

You know why every 29th August we can go back and say ‘Remember hurricane David’? Cus it has a name. It makes it real. You remember what Dominica was like then, how it became after the storm and where we are now. Not hurricane no name one. When the season opens you know that you have to do all you can to mitigate and to secure yourself, your loved ones and property. The hurricane will do what it wants but if you play your part it may not have to be another David or Katrina or Dean.
