Independence a time to take stock says Catherine Daniel

Daniel (left) said an all-inclusive approach is needed for developing Dominica

Minister for Social Services, Community Development, and Gender Affairs, Catherine Daniel has said that Independence is an important time to take stock of “ourselves”.

She was speaking at the official media launch of Independence Celebrations 2017 on Wednesday.

“Quite apart from the celebrations, Independence is an important time to take stock of ourselves, see where we are, where do we go from there,” she said. “So in that sense, the Independence Celebration occasion should help us to envision what further growth and development we would like to see in this our beautiful Dominica.”

She stated this is how the public gets to build a brighter future together.

“Not being destructive but instead being constructive in helping our dreams for Dominica become a reality,” she noted.

Daniel believes Dominica’s Independence Celebrations should be a time that helps people get closer together, “no matter what our differences.”

“A time to celebrate together, to host persons who come from overseas, to give support to our artistes and performers, and most of all give thanks to God for making all of this possible,” she remarked.

She said everyone has a part to play to build and help make Dominica a better place.

“With God’s help Dominica has been growing and developing in our 39 years of Independence and we have seen growth in many sectors; health, education; communications; infrastructure; geothermal energy; tourism; agriculture…,” she stated.

She continued, “We can celebrate our achievements while we continue to recognize that we have many more goals to achieve and more advancement to make.”

Daniel said in making those advancements, however, an all-inclusive approach, “a whole society approach,” is needed.

“We need government; private sector; and all citizens of this country,” she added.

Daniel is of the view that too often some persons wait and expect the government to carry out all of Dominica’s development, “but then we must realize that all of us, the private sector and all members of the public and government have a role in helping to build this country…”

She encouraged everyone to participate in this year’s Independence Celebrations and make it one of the best.

Dominica’s Independence Celebrations run from September 16 to November 4.

Well, I have taken stock sister Catherine and made up my mind that if your current leadership is stiil here at the Independence celebration I will leave the place and join the Dominicans in the diaspora. You may say that you don’t miss me, and the feeling is mutual. But you need our citizens overseas votes to stay in power but I will not need you again. That is how pissed off I, feeling right now. If you call that negative, fine, is you that caused it.

A time for self-introspection. Look inwards, and ask what have you done for your country. What more do you have to offer? Do you feel like you have done too little, maybe somethings need to change. It starts with you, what can you do to effect positive change? Adjust your attitude, maybe adjust your smile? Great development is as a result of attitudes towards yourself, others and the hard work put in to achieve it. Work on yourself, then we work with each other to successfully develop the country.

Agreed. It is a time of great reflection. Ponder upon how far we have come, where we see ourselves, personally and as a nation in the future and how we can work towards greater progress. A beautiful country and people, rich with culture and history. Journey on, to brighter days!

Woman, the only thing which needs reviewing is the progress Dominica made under other administrations prior to Roosevelt Skerrit circus coming to power. People need to review how far backward our nation went under people like you and you leader Roosevelt.

You know the man is a “Belt” used to beat (whip) our citizens. There is a guy in Wesley; his name is Roosevelt Williams, when I was a kid I had a slight bought with dyslexia, and for a long time I called him ‘Roosebelt’ because I could not pronounced Roosevelt.

That’s not the point here though; the bottom line is Dominica is not going any place with Roosebelt, the clap-whip Skerrit at the apex of the country, since his only hope for Dominica’s economy is the sale of Dominica’s diplomatic passports.

How can you talk about where the country goes from when you are one of the obstacles which brought the country to a full stop! (The period implemented at the end of a written, or verbal sentence).

Miss Daniels, Go fix your government House before you attempt to lecture us Dominicans on taking stoke f ourselves.
You are part of a continuous corrupt and dangerous Labour government headed by a corrupt and inept Prime Minister. Odd, isn’t it?. You ought to be ashamed of yourself aligning yourself with this corrupt Labour=r regime and what to tell us Dominicans to take stock of our independence. Shame on you. Go clean your dirty Labour linen and come talk to us, start with your leader, if you consider him to be one.
You have sat back, watch our country being prostituted with corruption and say nothing , do nothing on behalf of children and families you purport to represent. Shame oh you and your contemporises.
Do not lecture us, go lecture you inept leader.
    Skerrit must Go
    Skerrit must Go
that’s our message to you to get to him to get out. He has destroyed us and stained our Dominica and reduced poor people and elderly and families to beggars.

A lot of talk about “ourselves” in these addresses by Ministers of Government lately, as regards to Dominica’s independence. Yes, we have to take stock of ourselves. Yes, too many of us expect Government to do everything for us. However, independence of a nation is about self-reliance, self-rule, self-determination, and self-governance. So please tell me, all of you Ministers of Government and government officials, at what point in our measure, analysis and evaluation of the independence of the Commonwealth of Dominica from Great Britain, do we begin to look at, not only our personal independence and development, but also the national, the sovereign independence, and the development of the institutions of the sovereign State? What about starting with the independence of the different institutions of Government?
