Innovative look to Nature Island Literary Festival and Book Fair

The third Nature Island Literary Festival and Book Fair opens on Friday evening, 6th August, at the UWI Open Campus on Elmshall Road, Roseau, with rich performances, from both local and overseas performers.

The Festival continues through Saturday and Sunday with readings, open Mike sessions (open to anyone who wishes to read or recite their work), workshops and a book exchange. The children’s festival takes place on Saturday morning at Alliance Francaise. All events are free.

Chairman of the organizing committee, Alwin Bully, says that this year’s audiences can look forward to “dynamic readings by Caribbean and Dominican authors and have an excellent time interacting with the overseas presenters. We hope that our local writers, especially the younger ones, will see the festival as an incentive to learn and further their own talents.” The Festival also features great local food, drink, music, competitions and prizes for the audiences to enjoy.

The opening night sees an array of local and overseas talent. The keynote speaker is Dr Cynthia Wilson of Barbados, a teacher, writer and cultural icon. Local performers are Bernard Wiltshire who will recite a Kweyol poem, and Yakima Cuffy. Also performing that night is Kei Miller, an exciting new poetic voice from Jamaica, who will also be giving a workshop on Thursday 7 August.

Other overseas visitors are: Esther Phillips and Philip Nanton from Barbados; Esther Figueroa and Ian Randle from Jamaica, and Muhammad Muwakil from Trinidad. Esther Figueroa will be showing her film Jamaica for Sale on Sunday morning. This is a hard-hitting documentary about Jamaica’s tourist industry.

E-books feature in this year’s festival. “This year we’re excited to have a presentation of the three e-books – Kindle, the Nook and iPad” says Mr Bully. There will be chances to win two e-book readers.

A new feature of the Book Fair is a “book exchange”, organised in conjunction with Upper Lane Recycle, in Roseau. Books for exchange are now being accepted at Upper Lane Recycle on 32 Upper Lane or bring them with you to the festival.

The popular workshops – on poetry, sports journalism and internet marketing – run 5 August and 7 August. Register for all workshops by emailing [email protected] or ask for Kelly-Ann Williams at 448-2045 during working hours.
