IRC documentation centre opened

The Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) opened its Documentation Centre this morning as part of the mandate set out by the Electricity Supply Act, relating to the collection, publication and dissemination of information for use by the electricity investors and consumers.

This undertaking makes Dominica the third electricity regulatory body in the Caribbean to feature a documentation centre, joining Jamaica and Trinidad.

The centre will also double as a research centre on electricity and will house books as well as decision documents from the IRC and from a number of other regulatory bodies around the region.

Lancelot McCaskey

IRC Executive Director, Lancelot McCaskey, said that the centre, though resource sufficient, has room to grow.

He stated, “The shelves are not nearly as populated as they can be. So while we’re opening today, I want to point out that we have made provision for growth in the information. And the centre would be for the use of everyone, including the utilities, the engineers from the utilities, the public and the schools.”

“We hope the persons for whom the centre is established would try to make good use of it and we would welcome you to come in, to browse the information we have, to do research and to speak to us, if you need to get any guidance on anything you’d want to access,” he continued.

The centre will also house an exhibit of meters, historical and contemporary and two computers that will make available the internet to users.

Very nice but I think we would be more interested to know how the I.R.C. is reducing our bills. The cost of running this commission must be some $50/yr. for every Domlec subscriber in my estimation and unless they can show that their existence reduces our annual bills by more than that the justification for having such a body must be questionable.
