Island Windjammers’ 24-passenger tall ship, Sagitta visits Dominica regularly during the summer and fall. The company’s newest tall ship, 30 guest Vela, will begin service in December 2015 and will be calling weekly for much of the year.
The company pledged to continue visiting Dominica as scheduled after the devastating floods of Tropical Storm Erika, to help support the recovering economy in any way possible. With suggestions from Amber Rolle at Wacky Rollers and Captain Steffen Friedrich, an island resident and soon-to-be Sagitta captain, the company asked October cruise guests to bring donated school supplies with them to the ship.
Rolle coordinated a meeting with the crew of Sagitta and the Dominica Relief Effort when the ship arrived on Saturday October 10th, 2015. In addition to school supplies, guests donated US$400 in cash. The company has added a further US$1000 to assist with recovery efforts, particularly for the people of Petite Savanne. In a small ceremony that took place this morning on the Bay Front, Sagitta Representative Leah Millet handed over the donation to Mr. Don Coriette of the Office of Disaster Management, who represented the Government of Dominica. School supplies are to be delivered to DEXIA, who are officially responsible for the receipt of relief shipments.
Sagitta’s October cruise guests are enthusiastically looking forward to visiting the island this month. Vela will begin weekly calls in Dominica in early December. In the words of Leah Millett, Sagitta’s Operations Manager, “Dominica is a magical place, that we love to share with our guests”.
