Local pastor concerned about cemetery cleanliness

A local pastor here is adding his voice to those calling for the better upkeep of the country’s public cemetery.

Pastor Griffin Daniel said he supports fully, statements by the Mayor of Roseau Cecil Joseph, to put measures in place to ensure that the public cemetery is kept clean.

Daniel said over the past few years the public cemetery has been unclean.

“I believe that something must be put in place for the long-term period to ensure that the cemetery is properly up kept. The public cemetery has been quite dirty for some time and I am calling on the pastors who use the cemetery to come together to ensure that it remains clean…” he said.

The pastor is also calling for the creation of an organization to control the cleanliness of the public cemetery.

i never knew they were interested in cleaning
their cemetry. And when the catholic memebers go to tend their graves they “christian” have so much to say. By tendering our love one graves and making it look beautiful helps alot it making the cemetry look tidy.

Simply put, I endorse this course of action. Pastor, go right ahead. Do not hesitate and initiate the cleaning of the cemetery and protecting it from strewn garbage. It is a sacred ground. God will be pleased with you.
Those people who reside in the vicinity are obviously responsible for this. They are to be educated accordingly. Will it cost too much to prepare and have printed relevant information and either mail or give it to them? Hopefully they can read and comprehend it. All Dominicans especially those who reside in Roseau should cooperate in assisting you.
    God bless you!

I’m kind of surprised that more persons have not commented on this. Maybe some of the “regulars” on DNO have relatives and loved ones who were laid to rest, and are expecting someone else to care for the grave and its surroundings on their behalf. A few years before the Montserrat volcano began erupting in 1995, I was passing by the cemetary in Plymouth, and noted how it looked like a garden. Landscaped, and well-mowed lawn (I know the terrain and grave-density in the Dominican cemetaries are different). But the grounds were so well cared for.

I totally support the call to maintain a cleaner public cemetery. Considering that most people who are buried there are of the protestant faiths where tithing is a requirement, maybe a portion of the 10% could be allocated to a cemetery maintenance fund. This would pay for cutting the grass and planting flowers. What about each denomination that uses the cemetery take turns for the general upkeep? Maybe 2-3 months at a time, cleaning and beautifying the cemetery.
Another idea for raising funds to maintain the cemetery: what about having people pay in advance for a plot? Maybe $100 fee to be paid in advance, or an annual fee like what the Northeastern Funeral Association has? You sign up and pay $50 a year until you die. That way you are assured of your plot and the maintenance until the Resurrection.
