“We need democracy not communism!”
This was the message on the placard of a lone protester who showed her support and solidarity with six residents of Salisbury, who are facing charges in relation to a protest in the community on May 11.
Mary Boyer joined scores of other supporters of the six outside the court-house in Roseau when the charges were read to the six on Tuesday but she was unique in the sense that she wanted to make her opinion known to all, hence her placard.
She wants the charges to be dropped.
“I would like to see the court exonerate the people,” the Tarish Pit resident told Dominica News Online. “They have done nothing wrong; they are just fighting for the livelihood for themselves and their families.”
The five men and one woman were arrested in the community on June 11 sparking a round of angry confrontation between the police and residents. They were taken to the Police Headquarters in Roseau where they were released on bail.
They have been identified as Keith Bougouneau, Alex Howe, Hilary John, Gilbert Frederick, Christina Eusebe and Peter Vidal.
The matter was adjourned for October.
When questioned about her placard, Boyer explained that it is wrong to unable to demonstrate “peacefully.”
“Because we are in a place where people cannot gather peacefully and demonstrate for their rights, we are no longer a democratic place, we are heading down the wrong road,” she pointed out. “For 20 years now that present administration has been in power and they have done nothing for the people of Salisbury, because they are not supporting them. It is wrong.”
She is also condemning the actions of the Government, who she says, is responsible for the second round of protest in the community of Salisbury.
“It is wrong, I am condemning it,” Boyer noted. “That is the path to communism and we need to stop it in the path before it accelerates and gets worse. By that time even those supporting him (Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit) now, their children will be in danger. I am totally against that. We need to go back to our own loving people, what we born with, what Skerrit himself grew up with. We need no dictatorship in this peaceful place.”
Boyer said she is fed up with what is going on in Dominica.
“So much is going on. I am fed up and so that’s why I am coming here with my placard,” she said.
Attention she seeking but he won’t win the seat
Poor Miss Mary Boyer! I guess you were listening to a “certain” radio station where you heard Angelo, Arondel and Matt and many calling in speaking about what would happen if any of the Salisbury rioters were arrested. You heard about how thousands would gather and that there would be revolts all across Dominica. Yet, when you took off from your job (which you WILL be losing) to join the “revolution” you found yourself ALONE!!! As is the common practice of the Uneducated Wicked People, they talk, talk and talk, spread propaganda, incite violence and then leave their brain dead supporters to face the consequences on their own. Miss Mary Boyer you must have felt sadly disappointed standing there by yourself with your little piece of cardboard placard, singled out by the media and subsequently viewed by loyal Labourites as a very, very foolish (and funny) young lady. Miss Mary Boyer, Dominica is now laughing at you and Domlec will surely fire you. I feel bad for you.
Boyer! Do you really and truly know the meaning of Communism? Maybe if you knew you would have never held up this placard and walking so freely in front of the courts.
Im wondering why the people of bahwii did not go down to the court and protest and also demand that the charges are dropped seeing that it was their rights to protest and block public road.
You violaters of the law , you never cease to amaze me ,did she say peaceful demonstration? If that was peaceful lord have mercy on us
You not going to work, you alone in a protest with placard and you must get pay woye woye woye TELL ME IF TE COUNTRY NOT NICE!
a good man she looking for! wrong place chica
The democracy will cease to exists when u take from those who are willing to work, and give to those who are not.
It is very unfortunate that you want to compare the UWP rejection by the electorate with slavery or apartheid.
The UWP is a victim of their own concoction. For years they fantasize about being victims of a corrupt government.
They dreamed of a Dominica where the justice system is corrupt and the church and institutions of state are complicit.
Today they think they have brainwashed a sufficient segment of the population to incite them to rise up against a duly elected government.
I recognize by your language that most of you commenting against the government are either brainwashed or part of the propaganda machine propagating a doctrine of hate anger and jealousy.
You have lost your sense of reasoning and you are suffering from lust for power syndrome.
The is the source of the senseless action of the riotous mob at Salisbury.
The lone ranger. Not all D/cans share your opinion.
You should reside in a communist country. If you did, you would not be holding that placard and project that you are protesting in solidarity. The police would have arrested you even without telling you to move on. You would be charged, imprisoned for that matter for a long time, if not for life, shackled and tortured. There would be a probability that you may never be heard of again.
You people have it too easy and sweet in Dominica. You really need a communist government to experience what it is like. Better yet, go and reside in Iran and such countries. You will know what it is to be ruled and not to have freedom of speech and movement.
I salute you, my sister. Sometimes it takes one person to revolutionise things. We must continue to stand up for what is wrong and we must be united in solidarity. The same people who were bribed to vote for this present administration know that the things are happening in Dominica are wrong but they were given handouts so they dare say nothing because of that. There is a saying, “they evil that men do lives with them.”
I must say that Dominica is progressively changing for the worse. If we can’t protest against what is wrong then our rights are being swiftly taken away from us. This administration does not care about the rights of the masses. I have been saying a long time now that we will soon ask for permission to speak in public.
WE NEED FREEDOM; WE DON’T NEED OPPRESSION. STOP CARRYING OUT MASSA’S JOB.
Once this present administration is in power the future of our once peaceful island will be futile.
NO APOLOGIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are being ridiculous. The protester is within her right to protest, and she is carrying the right sign, but her target is wrong. The fact that she and others are protesting outside the courts, is a sign of democracy.
you salute her,but you safe and sound behind your computer, very nice supporter, friends like you all,who needs an enemy
Gordon when will you and people who think like you learn that infringement on people livlihood and their rights earn a living is a violation of basic human rights . You all think you are the brightest eh trying to divert the real issues to make Salisbury people look like they are the bad one when u all know the government has neglected this hard working people because they don’t vote labour it seem blocking a road is the only and worst thing to do eh u guys can only fool those who want to be fooled but I know u guy will not fool me ..
Dam. mary you got no work to do….if you was living in a communist country you would be arrested for protesting,,,,,,stop drinking the Kool Aid girl
Two words for you damn idiot.
it doh look like u living in dominica donkey
Brave lady. Just wish there were more people in Dominica with your sense of bravery.
Sense of stupidity!! Apparently she just doesn’t understand the issues. Everybody has a right to protest, but when you start blocking main roads, that is starting a war, because if Salisbury people are right, every village in Dominica has a right to block the main road at any time. Now tell me how a civilized society can function under such circumstances? Suppose St Joe people start doing the same thing, would Salisbury people be happy about that? Then Mahaut people could do it too, get the drift?
If the tables were turned toward them they would not like it.
There is a little problem here. That democracy thing. Wasn’t
the Government democratically elected. See, you can’t participate in a process and then bitch if you don’t like the results.
There is even a bigger problem here… Apparently, even without realising this, the lady:
1. Is enjoying the freedom and democracy in this communist state to peacefully and freely express herself. No one took notice but the cameras.
2. Took time away from her employer in order to go wave a placard in town. Now, that is a level of freedom. No? Of course, if DOMLEC dismisses her tomorow or deducts from her salary the total sum for time spent at that event’ someone will scream “victimization” and the DOMLEC manager will be accused of being a Skerrit gyal. After all, democracy and justice only exist when they serve certain Dominicans.
De kountry nice, boy!
Welcome to Dominica, its been like this since 2005.
Lord please send help. Did Mary say you can’t demonstrate peacefully in the country anymore? but lady look you doing what you say can’t be done, second part you claiming this is a communist country or on it’s way, lady the Cuban people would be mad as hell if they see this, for they know if they would hold up that poster you have there where they would be right now, SMH.
Miss Boyer, the lone placard holder, reminds me of Mr. Sorhaindo, when a stood alone close to DBS radio with his placard, in protest, because of the transferring of a Radio personality to another government department, because of his anti Labor Party Government views. Today, Sorhaindo has changed his colors. According to my grand ma, time changes, so do men.
Does she know the difference?
Clearly not. The poor thing is just another Dominican who ate her school fees. Sad. What a waste!
Skerrit is a hypocrite, Savarin shut down the country for
so many days u make him president
Give DNO a BREAK! It’s the same set that always quick to criticize that come here every day and TAKE THEIR PRECIOUS TIME AND READ THE STORIES! That’s where some of you are strong. Give DNO a break tan! Leave them spread the news. If it wasn’t for DNO some of you will know nothing of what is going on in Dominica . Allu too BIAS!! Shayte!
Enjoy your rights to protest peacefully without breaking the law in our Communist country…I think you should educate yourself about Communism. It is not good for your image though, to publicly declare you obvious lack of knowledge.
So my girl take a day off to go court. She love her party? or Dominica?
I wish , I had a nice paying job Domlec!
*Chris B Voice * I can leave my job to go on the bayfront, and do cushoni because the country nice boy.
lol lol lol for real the country really nice
When will some Dominicans understand that blocking roads, especially for an extended period of time, is illegal?
If your rights are infringed upon, that does not give you the right to infringe upon other people’s rights.
So you consider blocking the road throwing missiles at police damaging property peaceful young lady??? Maybe you should teach members of your party/community about peaceful protest……standing with a placard is peaceful..
..blocking a road abd lighting fires is not….real talk
So only one person turned up to support? Well who help you buy cow wont help you give it grass.
@Dominican Your darn idiot and illiterate. One had a placard. Go buy a book and a pencil to go to night school. You thought the Salisbury people were joking?
I couldn’t have said it better, I salute you Mary Boyer, you stand alone and make your voice heard, you are a true Dominican you have a passion for the next generation, saying your children will be in danger, because Dominican is going down the wrong path the path of communism
Wow! Mary, who knew behind that petite frame and high pitched voice you were such a pillar of democracy?
Kudos to you lady.
By the way, doesn’t the GM of Domlec have an issue with you voicing your opinions publicly?
Just asking, since it seems that so many institutions in Dominica practice partisan politics these days.
That’s how u demonstrate I sure she will not get arrested lol
She also will make NO impact whatsoever!!! If you are not going to hit people where they are will to feel it the most (like blocking roads) then you are wasting precious time and other resources. So you are talking pure fouchette about “that is how you demonstrate”.
Well, i guess the Police should be really “hitting some people” then.
doctrine of necessity can some one explain this doctrine mr skerrit introduced in Dominica to me please?
Lol, democracy is communism, what u need to say is we need
a constitutional republic.
Sorry Mary, but that protest was not peaceful. A peaceful protest would not hinder other person from going about their daily lives. A peaceful protest would not jeopardize the life of other persons who had nothing to do with the protest. A peaceful protest would be “making a statement, in a peaceful manner, without affecting the free flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.” PEACE!
I’m not on either side but you need a dictionary, because non of the things that you have described relates to communism.
And thats how you are fooled! Communism in theory is what we all aspire to achieve. But what has reality shown us time and time again?
Under communist states freedom of speech is stifled, a facade is upheld that everything is great when people are suffering immensely. That is PRECISELY what the current government of Dominica is trying to attain. “All shall eat” and “Yes we care” but the minute you question them…here comes firebombs, defamation cases, bogus IPO leak investigations, expired tear gas, and now live bullets.
Dominicans used to be a vocal and bold people. But in the name of this fake sense of care and concern they’ve been brought to their knees and don’t dare question those in authority! How can the state college president operate with no board overseeing his work? How can he impregnate a student and not lose his job or even get a slap on the wrist?
Doesn’t that sound like North Korean communism to you? Or Russia under Stalin? Or even Cuba up to now?
Leave Cuba out of it. Do you know Cuba’s history?
All what you described falls under the banner of Dictatorship and Totalitarianism. Communist ideology has been perverted for the selfish agendas of politicians and demonized as a result, so much so that the word (in common use) bears little resemblence to its originally intended use. That still doesn’t excuse anyone from being so ignorant as to outright equate communism to dictatorship.
The one thing you didn’t include is that the people have the right to elect their covering body, i didn’t see anyone holding a gun to their heads when they cast their ballots. Based on this fact, i don’t see how communism applies here.
One lady who has balls!
Well done Sister!!
Poor DNO cannot find anything newsworthy to report today.
Non sense!! always have haters all over the place….cant stand them always know it all and in fact knows jack!!
Did DNO ask to come on their site
You go girl!! Show the men some balls. The voice of a lone woman crying out for justice in the jungle of vindictiveness.
I AM SALISBURY, ARE U?
Assertive, NOT Aggressive!
Thats what she took time off from Domlec to do. SMH
Why cant people just mind their own business and stand up for once for what is right?
Always in everybody’s business and theirs more dirty.
Stupeeeessss!!!!
Would you have the guts to do the same?
How is that your business? Geesh
Now, if her salary for today was deducted from her wages, then she will demonstrate again?
No. The Great Blue Hope will demand that she receive her full salary because she was simply exercising her right and she did nothing wrong and the heckle from Bawi will claim she was “Victimized.”
