Parliamentary Representative for the Soufriere Constituency Denise Charles has said various measures are being undertaken to ensure that constituency remains clean and green as it is one of the popular areas for tourism.
“As you know the Soufriere Constituency is one of the most popular areas for tourism and we have some beautiful sites and we welcome a lot of visitors during the tourism season, so one of the key things in our constituency is to keep it clean and green,” she said.
Charles continued, “We had a situation in some of the villages where we had a garbage situation and we are on a movement to let residents understand that our village belongs to us and it is our responsibility to keep it clean and green.”
According to her, the first responsibility is with the residents of the respective villages.
Meantime, she revealed that a socio-economic group was formed in Soufriere to undertake a massive clean-up campaign in her constituency.
“We have a socio-economic group in Soufriere which we are focusing on the development plan for all the villages including Pointe Michel, Soufriere, Scottshead and Gallion and so one of our key focuses is the environment and helping our residents understand the importance of protecting our environment, not only because of tourists but for our own health and well-being,” Charles stated.
She added, “So we decided at that Town Hall Meeting that we are going to do a massive village clean-up starting with Soufriere and Scottshead to continue that effort in keeping the environment clean.”
The massive village clean-up is set for Saturday, July 21st.
I want to see the end result or is just more talk.
And while you are at it, have this “socio-economic” group put a damn roof on that bus stop!!!!
It is good to learn that the term “keep clean” is now being spoken for Dominica; there is a lot of that to do if we are to continue to attract more and more visitors. Remember the phrase: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness. So my dear Dominicans let us start to demonstrate our character of Godliness by keeping our environment clean–not just in the Soufriere constituency
Not only Soufriere but all over the island. I visited the LaPlaine community not too long and it is unbelievable to see the number of OLD VEHICLES a villager they told me by the name of ………… has piled along side the road by his home in Balizier.
High street is no differnt. Piles of vehicle parts and old vehicles too alongside the road by a man by the name of kakup.
Something must be done to those people for them to get rid of that eye sour in the village. The council must get involve and make them pay to get rid of their garbage. Inspite of that the LaPlaine village is very clean and lovely.
I agree with you about the eyesore posed by the derelict vehicles. Dominicans sadly lack civic pride. This should be taught in the homes and primary schools to the very young. Littering is a bad habit. Proper disposal of garbage seems to be an alien thing in this country. Proper litter laws with stiff penalties must be enacted along with vigorous enforcement of these laws. As said previously, education must be part and parcel of this effort. Cleanliness and good health go hand in hand.
The Island should be kept clean in general not just for tourist. This statement make me people feel like they do not matter.
It’s imperative that we keep our environment in pristine conditions. A filthy environment invites harmful insects, rodents and other disease-spreading creatures to take up permanent residence in such neighborhoods. This must not be done for political expediency but for genuine concerns over our health and for civic pride. We have to develop a passionate love for our environment and preserve in excellent conditions for generations yet unborn.
What about pte Michel? trash is piling from the ravine going up to cheme – neuve they build a small trash containment area but because of the lack of trash pick up the stuff is over flowing , bringing RATS and mice and other disease carrying rodent, Denise clean your village first before you clean somebodies else’s . when prince Charles visited pte Michel I saw it on live stream media when he drove by all that trash with skerro , and he turn a blind eye to it I was embarrassed , the whole saw it , a lot of emphasis need to be focused in that area, and through out the island in terms of trash pick up or we gonna have or properly already have a serious health problem on our hand.
