Meeting friends and making connections in Dominica

man on beachTravel writer tells of her experience in Dominica

Dominica is a Caribbean destination unlike any other. Located between Guadeloupe and Martinique, the “Nature Island” is the perfect place for nature lovers and hikers with some good diving options, too.

Located on the Northeast coast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Calibishie is a good first stop to get a taste of life on the island. Village life is relaxed, and you’ll find markets, food stalls and a few beach bars to entice you. Relax in the sun, breathe the clean, salty air and watch the ever-present, magnificent frigatebirds flying overhead.

I am not please with our government, why our roads doesnt have signs they didnt complain regarding the narrow roads they aware of Dominica is a mountainous island so they’re not expecting flat roads, without the proper signs it shows our island is backaward, it doesn’t take much to put these stuff in place. If our government refuse to take action when visitors come to our shores they will not come back.

Unfortunately, the people who are hungry for political power will not allow this to be. They will drag down Dominica’s name in the mud at every opportunity they get. This is their recipe for getting into power. Lovely Dominica, I say, land of the waters.

    Really. That’s not an article it’s a sentence. Calibishe… gimme a break!
Dominica is the most mountainous of all Islands in the Caribbean. While most Caribbean Islands have one volcano Dominica has 9, one of which is home to the largest boiling lake in the world. The mountainous terrain yields hundreds of fresh water rivers and streams bordered by flora and fauna so abundant there’s a sea of green over 80 percent of the Island; allowing for 5 different climactic zones. The Island is also home to wild life thought to be extinct in other Islands and has some of the best diving in the Caribbean, speaking of the sea… the coastal waters are a favorite destination for Whale and dolphin watchers alike. Historically the Island was the last Caribbean Island to be colonized by the French then British but it was also the first Caribbean Island to have internal self-rule. Dominica is also home to the last remaining indigenous Caribbean people the Arawak and Carib Indians… the Caribs live on a reservation on the north Eastern region in order to preserve their history and culture. The people of Dominica are the crown jewel of the Island the national motto “Apres bondei C’est la’terre’ is indicative of their cultural beliefs and history with respect the preservation of the islands natural state. The Nature Island is also one of the safest places to visit in the Caribbean. The mix of French, African, British and Carib races can been seen not only on the beautiful smiles and faces of the Island people but tasted in their cuisine. Though Small comparatively the Island has one of the richest cultures musically in the Caribbean. From a vocal, dance and instrumental perspective… the mix of cultures becomes explosive and captivating when expressed through local music. The best time to be a part of this musical sensation is during the World Creole Festival held once a year in October on the ‘Nature Island’.

Beautifully written, may I use some of your quotes to advertise Dominica on my Carib hut guest house rental site?

      • July 14, 2014

Yes, you may use any quotes from the article to help you promote Dominica and your rentals. We loved our stay there, and while I was only allowed to write a certain number of words, I tried to capture the feel of what it was like for us to be there. There is so much to the story, but I hope that in some small way I can encourage people to come and see and experience Dominica for themselves.
Thank you for the positive comments, and my very best wishes.

What? No posts? I guess the good things are not discussin?

Such a delight to read another’ s perspective of Dominica. That’s how our country should be portrayed by us dominicans if we want visitors to come and visit so that the country can move forward.
A real shame to read the comments of unpatriotic Dominicas who continually throw Dominica under the bus but in truth they are blind and ignorant.

This is an excellent article and positive outlook on Dominica. These are the kind of stories and testimonial that is germane to the tourism future of our island in lieu of all the negativity that continues to plague us. Keep advancing these kinds of stories in the forefront for Dominica’s sake.

What a way to enter the carnival weekend with such a positive story. Lovely Dominica!
