Melville Hall Airport to be renamed

The airport will be renamed the Douglas-Charles Airport
The airport will be renamed the Douglas-Charles Airport

Dominica’s main airport, the Melville Hall Airport will soon have a new name.

The airport will be renamed the Douglas-Charles Airport in tribute to late prime ministers, Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made the announcement at press conference at the Ministry of Finance conference room on Thursday.

“I am therefore pleased to announce that at its regular meeting on Tuesday 7th October, the cabinet of ministers ratified its earlier decision to have the Melville Hall Airport formally renamed The Douglas-Charles Airport as a tribute to and in honor of late Prime Ministers Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles,” he said.

According to him, the country has been blessed with excellent leaders over the years who made the “ultimate sacrifice for the service of this nation,” and who “died at a point where each was battling with the task of transforming the economy of Dominica in the throes of the worse economic recession in nearly 100 years.”

He said the efforts of Douglas and Charles should never be minimized or forgotten.

“And even those schools in their respective constituencies have been named in their honor, the government has always been in search of something more visible and readily evident to residents and visitors alike,” Skerrit noted. “We need as a nation on the eve of our 36 anniversary of independence to look inward for heroes. We need to salute our own. We need to express our gratitude to those who gave selflessly to the struggle.”

The prime minister informed that he presented the matter to the cabinet of ministers in which it was recommended that, “we use the single largest manifestation of progress and modernity in Dominica over the past 10 years as a fitting and lasting tribute to the contribution of late prime Ministers Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles to Dominica.”

“I refer to none other than the reconstruction and expansion of the Melville Hall airport and the introduction of night landing in Dominica,” which he says represent the “largest leap forward” in Dominica’s development as a nation.

The renaming ceremony will be held on Monday 27th October 2014 at Melville Hall.

Meantime the formal opening and renaming of the new and expanded highway from Melville Hall to Pond Casse is on the cards for Thursday 30th October 2014.

Further proof that Skerrit does not intend to buils any international airport. If he had plans to build one he wouls wait until it is built and then name it after national heroes like Pierro /Douglas airport. Is either he has no plans to build one or he does not believe he will win next election and therefore, tried this trick to see if will not buy the votes of true laborites like myself that have kissed Skerrit goodbye.

Dominicans this renaming is a distraction to appease when they release the news that the night landing has failed. Political gimmickry taking the people for fools I am extremely disappointed with the PM and his advisors, they are throwing away the opportunity to really take Dominica to another level of good governance and the rule of law order freedom and democracy. Instead poverty and corruption was the order of the day the signs of a failed government.

They can change the name of the airport all they like but it is still at Melville Hall.

  5. October 11, 2014

I am so tired of you people babbling about having an international airport. Becareful what you ask for. Do you have any idea of how much it costs to run an international airport? Does Dominica have the ways and means to support the airport. What about the business and the industry to support such a venture.
Would the people agree for VAT increase to maintain it?CRUCIFY HIM.. they would shout from the roof top and ask for Skeritt’s head on a platter.

Since most of you blogging here has never been further than the next town, why not leave this topic for people who knows what they are talking about and the rest of you just take a hike and let Rosie and Pierro rest in peace.

Another pointless waste of money. Money that could and should go towards something that is essential and would make a difference to Dominican lives. Just more superficial nonsense from a regime that has lost its way.

Ok ! Someone please, tell me I am dreaming. The Prime Minister, Hon. Skerritt, finally; from his own mouth, called the name of The Right Hon. Grand Bayrian Pierre Charles. It must be an election gimmick . The Right Hon. GB Pierre Charles himself would not want the Airport named after him , He would be the first to tell you that he does not deserve that honor. This man was a humble man, a man of his words.

If your government wants to honor our Pierro, why don’t you renovate that old house which he lived in tete lalley, turn it into a museum or even a library. that is where Le Chelle ( the Ladder) was founded and also his initiative of adult education in the community of Grand Bay.

These are ideals you need to honor. You need to uphold.
How can I forget the lady I saw dancing in the street a the alley, as a young kid. she was crying yet there was excitement and joy in her voice.

I could hear someone saying what’s wrong? her response was, ” I can finally read and write”. She had just gotten a Letter from the post office, from her daughter in England, and for the very first time, she could read the letter herself.

Her excitement was uncontrollable, she kept on saying ” Thank you lord for Pierro, I can read and write”. These words are on honor to Pierre Charles memory, it is worth more than anything else Skerritt will do, because Skerritt is not sincere.

Its been over 30 years now, I was just 13 year then, and there were 100’s of villages who can relay the same stories over and over again, and others whom, the Late Right Hon. GB Pierre Charles directly help one way or another in improving their wellbeing.

For me, personally, he left an impact on my life, my kids never met him, but they know of the man. they know the role he played in my life. I am blessed to have known him, and I am better for it.

Grand Bay is a better place; for he once walked amongst us. we do not need any fake gesture. We have a real one, he is after all, Grand bay’s favourite Son.

This is really ridiculous, what about the history of the place. Renaming places, like they renamed those three mountains, for no valid reason, just erases the history of Dominica!! I say name it Dame Eugenia Charles Airport. I have lived most of my life in the states and almost every time I tell someone I’m from Dominica, they have to tell me about the “iron” lady, Mary Eugenia Charles. That’s all some of them know about the country. I think Miss Charles made a name for herself and it’s definitely connected to Dominica.

Or how about Lennox Honeychurch? He is still alive, but we can give him his flowers before he die.

so what does this mean…we renaming the existing Airport that we have no plans in bringing Dominica into the 21st centry. What is this, Dominica is the only major Caribbean country without an Intenational Airport, how can you attract serious investment, international Hotel chains, this is absurd, why not wait for the international airport to nameit Charles-Douglas International, this is extremly didturbing to me.

    October 10, 2014

Why go through the rigmarole of changing the name of an airport that will disappear into oblivion once the new international airport is built anyway.
There are very few Melville Halls in the world as opposed to people named Douglas Charles. Why cause further confusion when the traveling public and their booking agents already have trouble locating us on the map?
I understand the wish to honour the memory of Dominicans, who contributed so much to the country but somehow one gets the feeling that this was not thought through properly.
Pierre Charles of blessed memory is already honoured in his own community with a boulevard and a secondary school named after him. Rosie Douglas, likewise has a primary school dedicated to his name. Why not make a more meaningful and less trouble some gesture by renaming the DSC the Rosie Douglas State College for instance.

The naming of the Melville Hall Airport after Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles is a very feeble and despicable attempt to appease certain factions of the labour base, which have in a very upfront manner challenged Skerrit on the demise of these two men. Hartley Henry, Tonny Astaphan, Alick Lawrence el al are very conscious of the fact that, the lbour party is on a downward trajectory and Skerrit is about to face the worse nightmare of his political life. (1) Even if the labour party wins the next election, this victory is going to be a pyrrhic victory and the downward slide will continue eventually culminating in the destruction of the labour party before the five year term. (2) If the UWP wins, Skerrit will have an avalanche of questions to answer which he may not have the answers for. (3) The UWP (Lenox, Thompson, Joshua Francis, Isaac Baptiste, Nicholas George etc.) in opposition is going to be so mentally and emotionally stressful for Skerrit that, he may institute a permanent sine die on all sessions of Parliament

You people have so much hatred and animosity that Dominica cannot prosper. Some of you have so much disdain and anger for a person some of you don’t even know. The time will come when you will have to answer for every evil word that come out from your mouth. There is absolutely nothing that man can do or say that doesn’t meet with vile words of resentment. What goes around comes around. Shame on the people who continually criticize the man for just being alive.

Changing an airport’s name is not simply a matter of a government making that decision and putting up new sign from one day to the next. There are international considerations to take into account such as the IATA designation code, which currently is DOM = DOminica Melville Hall (just a s DCF stands for Dominica CaneField. Barbados had to change their designation when they changed the name of their international airport in honour of Sir Grantley Adams to BGI = Barbados Grantley adams International) from Seawell.
I trust the government have carefully considered all the implications and are not acting in undue haste.

  33. The real issues
    October 10, 2014

Acts of repentance are displayed in different ways.

Remember what victimization and pressures were placed on Tiyani, Rosie Douglas’s son? The trained lawyer’s job as Magistrate was discontinued under this Skerritt DLP Gov’t.

For his alternative views to Skeriit’s DLP regarding Governance, respect for the constitution and laws of Dominica and denouncing corruption in Public Office, Tiyani will continue to be victimized by the cabal. Yes, the Skeriit DLP Govt.

Remember, who gave Pierre Charles the most stress? Remember the pressures two Ministers put him through? Remember who travelled to Barbados to meet with Chinese Officials? It happened when Pierro was PM.

His own Minister in the DLP Gov’t crooked him. Pierro knew nothing of that gross undiplomatic move by that Minister. Dominicans know who did that to Pierro.

Although Dominica had relations with Taiwan at the time, that Minister committed a serious illegal act. Pierro, since then, could not trust some of those guys in his own Party and Govt.

He was continuously stressed out. Pierro seemed to be even more suspicious of the behaviour of some of his own. Remember the famous saying,”Where were they when Pierro had his hands out for help”?

    Time to repent?

The real issues of jobs, jobs, jobs, economic development, rule of law, good governance, Electoral Reforms for FREE and FAIR Elections, must be the FOCUS. Be above Skerritt’s destractions.

Change of name to airport, but no change to the Electoral Process, which would certainly satisfy Rosie and Pierro even more. Those two fought for democracy and were vocal against dictatorship trends and rule.

And so the deception, lies, and propaganda continues through the doctrine of smoke and mirrors.
Over the last two or so days some very confusing pronouncement/announcements have been made by this government, via the ministry of health and the prime minister respectively. First, we had the ministry of health through the minister and other senior functionaries, declaring emphatically that the departments related were ready to deal with the Ebola, with no mention that the Nigerian band would be excluded; exactly 24 hours later the PM in a press conference, with selected media houses, announces that he has taken the irrevocable decision to ban the presence of the Nigerian band from coming to Dominica at this time. Personally, I have no problem with the decision. My question is why was it originally rejected by the PM?
Second, the manner in which the announcement, and the timing of this announcement, to change the name of the Melville Hall Airport, to the confusing name of Douglas/Charles Airport, suggests to me that this administration either has no regard for established protocol, and/or lacks the understanding, and/or the appreciation for protocol, and its function in the orderly functioning of our society.
It is sad, when some of us sit by silently and witness the demise the very substance of what we call democracy even some members of the media, who claim to be the stalwarts in the defense of democracy, maintain a thundering silence. What a Shame!

The Hartsfield- Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia USA is named after former mayors William Hartsfield and Maynard Jackson.

    • Jay
      October 11, 2014

You are correct, of course. However, I have passed many times through that airport but hardly anyone refers to it by that name. It is either simply known as Atlanta or at best Atlanta Hartsfield, in the mistaken believe that the latter is the name of its location.
Hartsfield-Jackson International is simply too much of a mouth full, confusing and to most people meaningless. Ask any international traveler and they will tell you they are going to Atlanta and would be mystified if you were to tell them that they are going to Hartsfield-Jackson International. . On the other hand, everyone knows JFK (John F Kennedy) in New York.
I am sure that the committee that decided on- and implemented that name change did so with the best intentions but perhaps not with all the desired results.

Ladies and gentle men there is nothing wrong in naming some historic place after one who has contributed to its development however if I know Rosie well like many people do I don’t think he would want this piece of embarrassment named after him . This does not reflect the hard work of Rosie or Perro at all. Were the farmily consulted on this? How can they allow skerriit to pin this embarrassment on good hard worked men like Rosie or Perro? I mean common my people do you all really think that reflect Rosie work ? I think skerriit should name it after his self because that more look like him than the previous leaders

Maurice Bishop International Airport, Grantley Adams, V C Bird, Ebenezer Joshua, George Charles, Ronald Reagan, JFK and the list goes on of the names of airports in the region, the U.S and all over the world.
So when one asks who is/was any of the above the answer is straight forward.
Now Dominicans are subjected to the additional agony of having to answer who is Douglas Charles? Skerrit garcon you not easy nuh! Your brain is getting twisted by the hour.
Why don’t you name the airport after Roosie and the State Palace after Pierro? By the way how comes you going to open the Melville Hall Road that not yet finish after all those years, and you not opening the State Palace? I not going to Melville Hall with you, I driving on that road every day but I want to see the golden floor of the State Malaise, that is de one that you have to open so that I can jump and lie down on Charlo bed.

    What do you think?

Let me just shear a few lines of the song ” Who The Cap Fits” by the late Bob Marley here:
Vs 1. Man to man is so unjust, children:
Ya don’t know who to trust.

Vs. 2. Some will eat and drink with you,
Then behind them su-su ‘pon you

Vs 3. Some will hate you, pretend they love you now,
    Then behind they try to eliminate you. But who Jah bless, no one curse;
Thank God, we’re past the worse.
    Hypocrites and parasites
Will come up and take a bite.

I feel parts of these three verses, especially verse 3, says it all. Those who knew both Rosie and Pierro as well as I knew them and understood what they went through, will understand why I highlighted these 3 verses, especially verse 3.

Mr prime minister, it is a very good gesture to have the airport named after two Dominicans. Although i think other names like Edward Oliver Leblanc who paved the way for all Dominicans with little resources in very difficult and challenging times would better fit this historic name change of the Airport. Sir, one more suggestion, since your intention is to build an International Airport i think the name change would be more appropriate after the completion. Well, if this is the whole idea that you have in mind knowing that the international airport will soon embark that is good and i hope that is the direction in which you a heading. If not, I also think you should away from blowing steam and announcing any big projects before you can undertake them. Sometimes it can be perceive as laughable and misleading.

I know how he feel about the people in the NE but respect the people who brought the initial change to DA, that you the PM can enjoy been PM today. I am also an individual who believe in recognizing PJ our first PM, history have shown us that the people in a lot of cases who fought for a cuse back in the day today we may call terroristic are now celebrated heros, the likes of tousaint louverture of Hati, George Washignton U.S, our own Jocko, even the Marrons of Jamaica just to name a few. so PJ did his time for what the government of the day deemed treason, now give him the recognition that. What else should we expect from this class of papy show. The hypocrisy in this Airport renaming is even laughable. Rosie is dead for 13 years and this group of ingrates don’t even recognize the anniversary of Roosie’s death.
I challenge any one of them to go identify Roosie’s grave and not one of them know where it is. In fact it is covered with bushes both Rosie and mike’s grave.
As far as I am concern both Roosie and Charles have already received their fair share of recognition particularly considering that none of them realy had a chance to occupy the position of PM to the point of making an impact. This is a rush rush move to get sympathy votes and that is all this is about. how ironic that on Monday Tyanni had a very emotional radio program that highlighted the shameful manner in which the current administration honor Rosie and Charles.
The following day the cabinet made a decision to rename the airport Douglas Charles – how ridiculous.
No prior consultation with the people not even to get a feed back.

So many people called Douglas to include Denzel, Sean, Robert, Ian, and much more called Charles like Mary, Eugenia, Ronald, Hubert. And I bet there are some Dcans actually CALLED Douglas Charles as their birth given name.

But if we gonna BUILD an Int. airport why just not WAIT to name it in their Honour. That would be a better approach one might consider.. If we so want to have both names we could go even further and name the Arrival terminal Charles (Douglas) and the Departure terminal Douglas (Charles)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dominica does not need a new name for the airport. It needs an international airport and in the meantime passengers need to know that they will be able to arrive on the island on the same as their departure day.

an international airport for what?dominica barely have people.atleast places that have international airports have hotels, guest houses etc. close by in case passengers have to overnight. where would you put these overnight passengers?at “my fathers place” in marigot? so much has to be done before an international airport can be constructed. get real my people.

I’m so tired of this weak argument! Why can’t we build an airport with adjoining facilities….encourage private investments into lodging, etc. there are countless ways to prepare the country for increased air traffic. It is really small minded to think that an investment as large as an airport can only occur AFTER hotels are constructed.

Furthermore who will invest in these hotels prior to the demand…they’ll just sit their shut collecting dust until the visitors arrive?

Too late my friend. Didn’t you hear the P.M. say on thursday his decisions are final, so he is already ruling by decree. He probably already his a new plaque for the airport made in China.

We will remind you of the largest leap forward on election day. Go ahead and open up the road that took 5 years and 3 loans and the project is still struggling for cash flow.Sintra built Portsmouth to Harten Garden road in 14 months for example so take this and analyze it.
So far the night landing has brought nothing and in fact LIAT is pulling out the 7:00 PM flight even after we gave them free money.
So rush to have the failed road project open to see if you will get votes but we will come to the fan fair with our toilets in our hand.
Putting Rosie and Pierre Charles on the airport is just another one of your election gimmick that makes me sick to my stomach. I guess after listening to Tyanni’s radio program the element of shame hit got home.

      October 9, 2014

Great Prime ministers – all of you laborites drunk on Tony Astaphan saliva. What was great about two the two Prime ministers one was in office for 13 months and spent 9 months away from his desk until there was an internal coupe planned and that Reginald Austrie declared that he was going to hand cuff Rosie to his chair. If you want to talk about Rosie stance for the plight of the Black man, Rosie’s life of generosity and that he would never have built Villas and offshore bank accounts these i would support 200%. The truth is Rosie cannot be considered a great Prime minister. In fact the role of PM exposed Rosie as someone who did not have managerial capabilities.
As for Pierre Charles he was a good guy who cared about his people and he was always there for his people. Pierre Charles was a work horse during the rebuilding of the labor Party- very dedicated. he to did not have a chance to make an impact. Nationally Pierre Charles is only known for coining the Phrase about Dominicans, their ignorance and their willingness to wear that Ignorance as a badge of honor.

What else is there to associate the two dead PM with greatness. Lang Mama is no hypocrite and I hate hypocrites and liars.

Why not a name that truly identifies with our Dominican heritage? It’s not necessarily a bad idea but I don’t care for the name for the reasons provided. We can rename a bridge or street or hospital after these men for example. The airport should be more symbolic of Dominica as a whole.

I totally agree with you 100% on that. you hear every infrastructure n roads have names of ppl….Melville Hall have already made its name and is such a beautiful and unique name. What do u think of when you hear da name Melville Hall???

PM Skerritt told us not too long ago after a visit to China, that funds have been secured for an international airport and that the plans were ready. So to come now and rename Melville Hall airport at this time, suggest that soon we will be forgetting this old airport in favour of the new international airport. Thus the names of Douglas and Charles will be left behind for who knows what and won’t have the prominence it is meant to receive for too long. That being said, can we ask,did the PM lie to us about the international airport? If not then why not wait to name it after Douglas/Charles?.Dominicans won’t get giddy over this announcement because its only political gimmickry of the first degree on the eve of elections.

Sentimentality aside, what exactly did either Roosie or Pierro do that sticks out in your mind as being memorable?

They may both have been very fine gentlemen but can you name one thing that either one of them did that transformed the country?

While you are at it, why don’t you name the country after yourself. How about SkerritLand?

These renaming are taking political undertones. Is it only labourite that have served. So Couldn’t the Castle Bruce Secondary school be named after Romanus Bannis, a man who served and was influential in securing this institution. You look at naming Melville Hall Airport after two Prime Ministers; So Hon Edison James was not a Prime Minister? Did he not serve? One of the longest serving parliamentarian and former Prime Minister who served longer than Pierre and Douglas. Come on. Don’t be that glaring at these political and mischievous decisions.

I fully support the honoring of those who have served. But there are persons on both sides of the isle who have served. These decision are divisive to its best.
