Melville Hall to Pond Casse Highway to be named after President Liverpool

Liverpool served as sixth President of Dominica, from October 2, 2003 to September 17, 2012.
Liverpool served as sixth President of Dominica, from October 2, 2003 to September 17, 2012.

The Melville Hall to Pond Casse Highway is to be named after the former President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr. Nicholas Liverpool.

A press release from the office of the prime minister said official opening and naming will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 4:00 pm.

The highway is to honor Liverpool’s “vast contribution to national, regional and international development,” the release said.

Prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit said Dr. Liverpool blazed a trail as a distinguished Jurist and legal expert; bringing much exposure and positive recognition to the Commonwealth of Dominica over the past five decades.

He said the former President also brought much dignity and humility to the office of President; serving at a very challenging period in Dominica’s social and economic rebound from the global economic recession.

“Dr. Liverpool’s was a firm and assured hand, overseeing the course of national development during the first decade of the 21st century. His contribution was immense and is richly deserving of national honour and recognition,” Prime Minister Skerrit said.

The new highway will be called, “The Nicholas Liverpool Highway,” according to the release.

Members of the General Public are therefore invited to attend the ceremony.

Mr. Skerrit, naming the Pond Casse Highway after President Liverpool and the airport after Charles and Douglas will not fool us in Grand Bay again and as for Mr. Liverpool what has he done in Grand Bay, his so call village , nothing and very little Grandbarians knows who he is, apart from the old people .

I’m still trying to figure out the connection between Dr. Liverpool and a winding, two-lane piece of road. I can understand if the government builds a new judicial building and names it after Dr. Liverpool. But the road to the airport?

While I am not against something being named after Mr. Liverpool shouldn’t it be something along his career path-that is law? What significant contribution has he made in terms of infrastructural development? Like I say I am not against it; it should just be along his line of work.

I endorse this name change to Dr. Liverpool’s name. He is also a real gentleman. Let us applaud the PM’s decision. Those who have contributed much to Dominica are entitled to be recognized. There are many areas in D/ca which should be named in their honor.

We are discussing matters of vital importance and are insulting each other.Everyone has their power of choice. When someone spell a word wrong you don’t insult them then correct them .We keep lashing at each other with no compassion.Every leader did their best to promote Dominica. They all made mistakes. It seems to me Dominicans are very bitter when comes to political issues. How are we going to develop a Country when we keep pushing each other down?No matter who wins the election it will never be a bed of roses take it to the bank.Times are changing and we have to beware of the difficulties that lies ahead.Remember the children of Israel how they complaint and wasn’t satisfied with what God provided for them.Dominica has come along way inspite of its challenges.

This is very cheap politics, and I THINK that the Prime Minister is stooping very low indeed .Don’t get us wrong Mr. Skerrit, we are not saying that decease pierro and should not be honoured, further more schools are named after them already and naming an airport after them is some what over doing it. Mr. liverpool no one can deny his pretige. there are many other dominicans base on their own merits and in their own rights who are equally worthy Mr. Skerrit people is seeing through this . please know that flattery will get you no where..

Perhaps Skerrit forgot that road already ha a name. The Imperial Road, that is part of our history. If anyone deserves this road to be named after him it would be Hesketh Bell, who worked wonders for the development of Dominica and got this road started in the first place., ask Dr. Honeychurch. Obviously, mr. Skerrit has not read any books about Dominica. It is not a new new road at all, just upgraded and brought into the 21 st. century.

Oh Dear! Don’t you think we should use more recent names? This airport road has been significantly upgraded and this makes a huge impact on the time it takes locals and visitors, traveling south from the airport, to reach their destinations. The distance of Roseau from Melville Hall airport has been a major development setback for us in every way. The person most responsible for this upgrade should be at the forefront of a list of persons after which it is to be named. And then a vote can be taken at Parliament.

Otherwise, I would just name it Highway 60. Yes, maybe we should drop these names and use numbers for the highways/major roadways in Dominica. No offense to Mr. Liverpool.

I hope that Lennox will have the courage to rename the highway once the UWP takes office.

Oh Roosevelt! Are you serious? Why not rename the law library after Dr. Liverpool? How do you go about equating a highway with the services of a legal luminary? Dr. Nick was considered a brilliant jurist and an intelligent guy, but his work in the communities of Dominica are not known. He was not known to have a take on roads, or transportation, or rural development. No one knows how he feels about the connectivity of communities, or the plight of those who travel the Meliville Hall/Roseau route, or even his thoughts on air travel or night landing. So why a road after Dr. Nick? Skerrit will never cease to annoy me!

    • November 2, 2014

Roosevelt do not think, or he thinks upside down. Roosevelt do not know anything much about the HISTORY of Dominica. Do not blame him though, he is under pressure. Stress is a dangerous illness, ELECTION is upcoming; therefore, he has to make an effort.

This is what gets to me, the naming of roads, mountains, airports, decision to change courts of appeal etc. without the input from the community or civilians – that is, something akin to a referendum.
Yea I know, I know, for some of you there are more ‘important things to collaborate on but that’s relative and moreover, it’s about inclusiveness. I am a bit tired of decisions being taking ‘in my best interest’ and though government are elected to make decisions on behalf of its citizens, there should be more collaboration because quite frankly, I often think our leaders are way off the mark.

It seems to me that Roosevelt Skerritt is behaving like a man who is about to lose an election so he is doing things to anger and ridicule the people especially those of Marigot. It cannot be that there are not sons and daughters of the general northeast who the airport and road could not be named after. Those who choose to support the labour party particularly those from Marigot this is just another slap in your faces. You have distinguished yourselves as those who have deep hate and prejudice for your own.

    October 20, 2014

This is a major highway on the island – It should be named after someone who is/was a major figure on the island and/or contributed significantly to the highway’s development. While Mr Liverpool is not a bad choice, at least three prominent persons could have been nominated and a voting process could have been held in Parliament to select the most suitable person. That would have been a better approach even though he might still have won the vote.

Both Mr. Vernon Shaw and Roosevelt Skeritt are as good candidates as Mr. Liverpool for being named after this highway.

For your information Edison James did his fair share all over Dominica. He constructed:
        North East Comprehensive
Grand Bay Secondary named after Pierre Charles
        Jimmit/Warner Road
        Delices/Petite Savanne Road
        Fab Road
        Castle Bruce Secondary
None of these were named after him. Edison James will go down in History as having made the most significant and unselfish contribution to the development of Dominica in the shortest time period. He will get his recognition in due course.
