UPDATE: Men hold silent protest for Andy Carbon

andy protest1

Two men on Monday morning held a silent protest in Roseau in solidarity with Andy Carbon, a homeless man, who was reportedly burnt with hot water outside a restaurant last week.

The men, Mike Wallace from Wesley and Mervin Jno Baptiste of Roseau, hold placards which read “Justice for Andy” and “Enough is Enough.”

Carbon was reportedly attacked last Wednesday outside the restaurant with hot, scalding water. He is now suffering from burns to his back and has been hospitalized.

The police said late last week that they have a suspect in the matter and investigations are ongoing.

The men held their protest while plainclothes police officers kept watch.

“I am here this morning to stand in what I call a personal silent protest against the level of injustice and the focus this point is on Andy,” Wallace told Dominica News Online (DNO). “I have decided to stay away from work and come out there to stand and highlight this level of injustice which must come to an end.”

He said while Andy might be disadvantaged, the attack on him was wrong.

“I believe that this is disturbing, it is distasteful and as a citizen of this country, I do believe that the police have a responsibility to act on behalf of the people,” he lamented.

Jno Baptiste said he find it appalling that people don’t stand up for justice in Dominica.

“I am standing up for Andy and I stand up with my brother Mike Wallace, because he was there like a lone ranger and I just joined in the efforts,” he stated.

Meantime, a well-known teacher, Sir Luther Martin, who was close to the scene of the silent protest, told DNO the vagrants should not be in the streets and their families should take care of them instead.

However, he stated, “They are there and they are among us, so what we have to do is tolerate them, but don’t abuse them. They can be troublesome but we must find a place to put them so that they can be secured.”

Dominica is in need of a Blessed (Mother) Teresa of Calcutta and how she helped the poor of Calcutta in India. Read about her.
Pope Francis will be canonizing her soon. Of course, she is already a Saint in Heaven. God has already crowned her Saint in Heaven for her godly works among the poor. This is a formality for the world. What she did, with the love in her heart, she did for God.
Blessed (Mother) Teresa of Calcutta would first feed the poor. Then she would have them cleaned up and then teach them about God. This was her mission. Hers was still (is) a mission of mercy.
Mother Teresa was told of a poor woman who was out on the street and suffering. She went to the woman. The mother told her about her son who is rich and had a business.

    July 7, 2016

Mother Teresa helped the woman. She went to the man and told him he must take care of his mother financially. I imagine what she told him in no uncertain way.
Mother Teresa refused no one. There are more stories about her.
The government should help people as Andy. They should never be hungry or in need of clothing and housing.
There is a tendency to turn away from the poor and also due to their stench. I realize one cannot take chances. However, a home should be built for them with proper supervision and health ones.
The few poor/homeless in D/ca should not be difficult to handle if placed in a proper accommodation.

I do not condone what was done to the guy. But this is the second time he has been attacked nobody even bother to assist or talk on his behalf. But what is happening now is politics we playing to see who will score points. Stop playing politics with this it is not right. Let us come together to assist the homeless in some way please. Many vagrants are attacked daily on the streets on Roseau. But because is who now we playing politics stop that. Lets build proper facilities and families take care of your children no matter what they turn out to be. God is watching.

Human beings are becoming more and more criminally creative! They lack vision, sympathy, and love, and they spend their days conforming to the wickedness of others. God bless these two individuals who still saw value in the victim and found the courage to say something. For those of you who are saying why haven’t anyone stood up for other issues; maybe YOU ALL should spend less time on social media and help the sexually-abused, those in poverty, or the handicapped! The world has a plethora of issues, and WE can all work to prevent suffering!

MY ANSWER: Andy is the one who gets hurt and not the Hotel. I would find Andy as soon as possible and carry something with me. Andy I am so sorry to learn what happen to you, man you could have got killed. Why this should have happened to a nice guy like you, lots of friends and relatives are concern about the incident. As soon as you are better, don’t even pass by this place again, come home with me until you are properly healed. You can do better, talk to me and I will listen. Take it easy ,be calm the police is handling the matter ,just get well. We have so much to talk about. The sick person needs the attention and not the street.

Too much politics in Dominica. How many bakes and salt fish have these too protesters bought this man over the years? They must have seen him in Roseau before. When the Government helps, the same people are called greedy and needy in the worst possible way by the opposition. Now they are demonstrating? What are the demonstrating for?

MR. Donald Hill ! Rather than calming down the situation, you are setting fire. The two young men holding the banner, could well have offered Andy something to do to keep him off the street. Prevention is sometimes better than cure. They did nothing to help him and they are now losing two days off work protesting to hurt somebody else. Just as bad as the one who hurt Andy. Not too long ago, the Mayor of Roseau, tourism minister, DBS manager and vendors, held a meeting about concern of vagrancy in Roseau. We have to protect Dominica and not hide behind Dominica. All hospital beds are full up with young people no room for the old and aged. Dominica is full of golden opportunities, why a 32 year old in the street of Roseau causing a nuisance. AS an evangelist the solution lie’s with you.

What happened to the person who put something in his butt? he/she should be punished, to the full extent, and also, the paro, who killed the harmless Seraphine man, a lot of crimes go unpunished, Dominica, has no law, that is why all those cruel things are happening.

There are a lot of lawyers and policemen, in the island, and most times, they are useless, instead of standing by the road, and looking for those who have no license and insurance, they should look at the crimes which are rising, and the government, should fix up the pot holes in the roads.

Crimes are on the rise, I could go on and on, but have no time.

When Andy is release from hospital it’s back to being Slapped, hit with bottles, Sodomized, broken bones but…we don’t want justice for that….we only want justice for the things Social Media and the news see so we can get a little recognition. Stop with that fake love, you’ll don’t love him, but he was burnt by a restaurant so…lets see if we can sue. But when this blows over and if no lawyer paper pass. It going to be right back infront 7-11, 7 days a week for him. Family only showing up now to see if they can get a money from the restaurant. And the people who has been thumbing me down…you’ll need to see through those Gimmicks, when he had his case on his hand it wasn’t enough…his burst head…it wasnt enough…but now that A minister has commented and social media in an upgrade…we want “JUSTICE”. The vagrant that was killed Newtown, and the one that was lit on fire no justice cause there was nobody to sue and Facebook didnt care but now that we can sue we care.

I was appalled to read such news. How could a person, in their right mind, abuse a helpless individual? It is true that many have become heartless and cold on this island. The homeless are among us and we should try as hard as possible to treat them with respect just for the fact that they, too, are human beings just like the rest of us. Many of them held jobs in the past and their situation was not always the way that they are today. We all go through our struggles in life and some of us do not have the same coping skills.
I applaud brothers Wallace and Jno Baptiste for standing up for the rights of Andy. Andy is not a nobody. He was born of parents just like all of us. It’s just a sad situation that he is in and we need to have more concern for the less fortunate. The elders used to say, ” as one is born it’s not the same way one dies.” We never know what the future holds so let’s not despise those who need help among us.

Yes…Charge whoever did that to him, a human being shouldn’t be assaulted like that. HOWEVER!
Next time you see Andy Look at him Look at all the broken bones, burst head and scar tissue on his body, Look at the facebook videos of people making him do pushups and degrading things for$1.Protest that! don’t come and protest his burning because it getting some attention and you see it as a way to get a little recognition. Mike is from Wesly right? i”m willing to bet either you, your grand father, somebody have a farm in Wesly. If you care for Andy so much, come down town on a Saturday, put Andy on a van, bring him up and let him work, he willing to do push ups and all kind of things for $1,so im sure he will put a carrot in a hole for the same $1.
Now he got burnt everybody like “Alas…my Andy! my Andy!” In front of me! Andy catch a Guinness bottle with his face next to 7-11!! So if Mike and the others Loved Andy you’ll dont love Andy…just see it as a way for a little…

Andy Carbon has been harmed enough. Amazing he is still alive. He should have a place to stay, sleep, eat and bathe. I recognize it may be difficult keeping him indoors especially during the day. People as he move around and have become accustomed to it. He should not be outdoors at nights so as to avoid further harm to him. I hope he will recuperate.
On another note, I suggest the person, as I understood is a restaurant owner who threw hot water on him should bear his hospital costs and any other costs incurred.
I expect there will be a Court case. My further suggestion is, if there is one (although it could be settled out of Court), this person should be fined a certain sum of money to assist this man to rehabilitate and to ensure he has a place to reside and meals in some sort of accommodation. I do think the government and other authorities could communicate with this person to assist Andy. Let this be the person’s sentence.
The above came to my mind.

      July 4, 2016

The Andy you talking about was back out in town harassing people again today. The mother who has been missing in action for the last how many year but found her way for her 15 minutes of fame on the ridiculous radio show matt in the morning was no where to help her son once again.

      • Tell the Facts
        July 6, 2016

I suppose harassing people for money. He should not be harmed.
Did you state he is better? So quickly, with all the burns he got from the hot water?
You should know he is an ignorant man and obviously does not know better. He is in dire need of help. The government will have to try to do something about him and the others who roam the streets.
If the mother is capable of helping him, she should be ordered to do so. Too many are dependent on the government when they have relatives who could assist them.
Keeping them indoors is another matter. This is a huge problem which exists in Dominica. The government will have to find a solution.

I do not talk political crap and I do not have blind allegiance. You support one Party and so you are biased toward the other. You see things one way, I see it another way.
When you consistently lambaste the government, not everyone will agree with you. I cannot support one that is constantly on the warpath. I am a person of peace. I like peace and to live in peace. I would like to see everyone do the same. Not all are peaceful. There are some, nothing is pleasing to them and never will.
God gave everyone a certain degree of intelligence. They must utilize it and not to be disagreeable. Christians should know and learn to speak the truth and to be patient. They should conduct themselves in words and actions graciously. It is in the Holy Bible.
God is not calling us to be a thorn in people’s sides. Some people want to play God. Is God pleased with them? Keep in mind Our Lord said, “Vengeance is Mine I will repay.” Therefore, let it be.

Mental illness plays a big part in what happens to us and how we cope, plus the care we receive.. That’s the power of media. If someone had bothered to write up a story about the ongoing abuse of vagrants maybe there would have been action a long time ago. Another thought is that people are accustomed to slaps in Dominica…that form of “abuse” is common place for many since childhood. Hot oil or water is not!

        This is my point
Is this the first time a vagrant has been abused? beaten? even killed? NO!
HOWEVER…my point is, people are only saying “Justice for Andy” because social media and other outlets has picked up the story. So people jumping on the band wagon for a little attention. Those two men in the story don’t love Andy. But Blackmore commented on it so they came to get their picture taken. Andy has had burst head, broken bones, naked, dirty…no one was there for him ALL OF A SUDDEN! news story…family crawling out the woodwork. While I condemm the attack , I take issue with peopole “fake caring” for him. Those of us who give Andy a Crix outside 7-11 Probably care more for him than those two men.

I do not know why these people would give you thumbs down. You stated the truth. These must be the guilty ones. There are some who do not want to hear/read the truth but the truth must be told and prevail.
The public in general, those who tend to wickedly harm these vulnerable people should be counseled. The problem is they are never caught.
I am unable to comprehend why someone would harm a homeless person but there are those who do it, think nothing of it and consider it a joke. These people will one day get old, if they are not yet old. Their last days will not be happy ones. They must be taught this, in no uncertain manner. This type of discipline should commence in the home.
These members of society need to transform their ways. They are part of the D/can society who is in dire need of changing.

YOu mean where is the government. They are the ones for years people have been calling for years to protect these people, it is NOT the role nor is it the fault of the public. This government has failed in taking care of the venerable people of Dominica. They and Skerrit have wasted money of the system called Red Clinic, where that abuse poor and vulnerable people and families begging for a dollar. It is a shame.
this corrupt Labour government has lost ideas and are incompetent.

I wholeheartedly endorse your comment. Everyone is responsible for helping the homeless. No one should be exonerated from this. It takes a situation as this to bring it to everyone’s attention. Every D/can who can afford something should really help them, be it in the form of a contribution.
We must bear in mind what Our Lord said: Matthew 31: 46 – Judgment of the Nations – “. . . What you did to the least of these, you did for Me. What you did not do for them, you did not do for Me.” The Word of the Lord.

Firstly I will give credit where credit is due. For a change, it is nice to see they know the difference between a protest and a riot compared to what uwpites have done in the pass. Secondly, what is this hypocrisy about? Where were these 2 men and the rest of the uwp gang when that same Andy was bulled, when he was sodomized, when his hands were broken etc etc etc. Is it only unfair to him when a Labour supporter is involved? Hypocrites at their best, especially when they play a part in having him on the road in that condition as a paro.

    • Congratulations to Mike Wallace and Mervin Jno Baptiste for having the grace and guts to stand up for Andy Carbon. Dominica needs a few more good men.

Guaranteed if I had been in Dominica I would have been with them holding up a sign. In fact would have made a speech that would make my comments to DNO pale in comparison.

There should have been more than two men protesting on the street. In fact the restaurant should be shut down until justice is rendered, and the whole story covered by national media.

Some have implied that the police have not laid charges because of who owner of the business is, or because of who the suspect is. If this is true I am sorry but Dominica has no justice. It is the duty of the judge to hear the case and objectively evaluate the charge.

If justice is withheld because of who the accused is this needs to be blown out of the water. Come on DNO. The people deserve better than this,

If you want the situation in D/ca to change, change your style as embedded in your heart and mind. You lack godly enlightenment.
This is why I am not impressed with some of you who appear to be godly. What comes out of the mouths, the fingers tell a lot about the condition of a person’s heart and mind. You cannot deceive some people. Most of all, God is not deceived by your attitude. Do not deprive yourself of his blessing and graces. Change your ways and your words.
The God I know is all-loving, holy and pure. He is displeased at your words. He expects us to be respectable and obedient to authority. Everything we need to know and how we should talk and act is contained in Holy Scripture, the Old and New Testaments. Do not deceive yourself otherwise.

We all see Andy begging and hungry; some of us give him food; some of us are genuinely sorry; and pray that things will change for all the homeless, mentally ill persons who are totally neglected by all of us. It has become a normal part of they living among us; walking aimlessly while they beg – it is a sad situation; but for right thinking, sane people to hurt him in such a brutal manner cannot be right. I am sure you have seen Andy on the streets just like I have. Can I call you a hypocrite for not taking him into your house or making it a point of duty to find him wherever he is to fee him. It cannot be hypocrite to protest against this kind of brutality. It hurts my heart when we become so damn political.
