(DNO) The development of a national integration water resource management policy for Dominica is one step closer to becoming a reality.

General Manager of Dominica Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO), Bernard Ettinoffe, told a stakeholders consultation at the Fort Young Hotel on Friday that an effective plan requires suitable legislation and policies.

He says public education and the creation of awareness to preserve the resource for future use is significant.

“DOWASCO is charged with the primary responsibility of the management of Dominica resources, to ensure that future generations have safe drinking water… however the issues of water management are many and cannot be the work of DOWASCO only,” he said.

According to him, government, civil society, schools, special interest groups who are involved in utilizing water needs to play their part. He says an effective plan requires stable legislation and policies and requires the impute of the legal authorities to review existing legislation, enhance or change, enact new ones where necessary and adapt suitable policies as needed.

He says sustainable management practices that seek to balance the demand for water and the impact of the environment is essential to satisfy the needs of its customers.

Meantime Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Housing, Settlements and Water Resource Management, Davis Letang, says Dominica has recognize the need for ratification of international protocol and to institute public policies to guide the implementation process.
