On Saturday August 26th 2017 a number of representatives from various Media Houses in Dominica, met at the Media Center of the Windsor Park and voted in favour of establishing a new association to represent the interests of Media Workers on Island.
The General Body voted that the new organization be called the Dominica Press Corps.
The Current Membership of the Dominica Press Corp stands at 43, with 25 members attending Saturday’s meeting.
An Interim Committee was elected and Comprises the following individuals:
Garvin Richards – President
Edona Jno Baptiste – Vice President
Keisha Polydore – Secretary
Kirshena Joseph – Assistant Secretary
Chad George – Treasurer
Sheena Harry – Public Relations Officer
The Interim Executive has been mandated to prepare a constitution and put things in place for the staging of its first Annual General Meeting at a date to be announced.
The Annual General Meeting will also see the election of an official executive to chart the way forward for the Dominica Press Corps.
The Meeting on August 26th, was a follow up meeting to one held on the 12th of August 2017 where those present expressed their wishes to form a new association and not to continue with the existing Media Workers Association of Dominica (MWAD).
It was felt at that meeting that MWAD had been inactive for too long and that a fresh start was needed.
Interim President of the Dominica Press Corps Garvin Richards thanked the membership for entrusting him and the executive with the responsibilities of charting a way forward.
“I look forward to working with the entire team, and helping to see the media profession reach higher heights, I also wish to thank the members of the previous media workers association for being the original pioneers,” he said. “As is with everything in life, sometimes you need to Re brand and Re Tool, and while the name maybe be different the general aim of the Dominica Press Corps is to raise the standards of practice and look out for the welfare of the Media. I am looking forward to working with all stake holders to get their input and support moving forward. Our Immediate goal now is to put Dominica Media back on the Map.”
The Dominica Press Corps Interim Executive is expected to meet in the coming weeks to formalize its Constitution.
I thought the names of associations and the likes are protected under the law, and if so how could it be changed on the whim like this?

If this group is a legit group, why are they operating in a WhatsApp chat group created by Charles Jong in 2015 as part of his job for the government? Charles Jong even changed the name of his group to reflect the new media group.
Guys like Garvin are not ADMINs of the group.
If this is a new media entity, they should have their own WhatsApp group and the like.
As I said before, I don’t trust that group.

The science of journalism is to inform and educate the people, today’s media personels, not being widely read and well informed have become partisan as oppose to being by-partisan, distorting the facts for their own personal gains and group agendas, and in most cases , the root of all fake news printed. The ability to investigate , have become obsolete, hear say taking the place of facts just to get into the good graces of Gov’t and the private sector, or face being ostracized, this is the standard of todays media houses. Journalist should be professionals who reporting the news and not making or manufacturing the news. Last week DBS had a news item about how the leader of the UWP clarified their position re.the one China policy.To me that is fake news.Years ago DBS is aware that the party has accepted the one China policy.
Two Thursday ago the same DBS reporting how Trump blamed the group who demonstrated against the racist again this is fake news. He blamed both sides for the riots.
This is nothing more than a box loaded with RED toys. But as far as I am concerned is 0-0 =0 because what we have in the name of media in Dominica is nonsense and this new group is more of the same. I only use to listening to Q95 when Angello was there but the time they fired him, I fired myself to because I cannot take in the Matt, that cannot do his own research and his so called hot seat has been taken by advertisers that have taken over the program like the bestbuy, the jollys, the KFC’s and you name it, the same old no matter what name they go by. So Q95 has become nothing but crap and I have no time to listen to their nonsense. So no matter what this new team calls themselves, it’s just going to be a continuation of the same damn nonsense that we have gotten use to in this country

MWAD is dead, Q95 is dead, Kairie is dead, Dbs is dead, DNO is dead, Voice of Life has been dead and buried longtime, and so to is GIS. So Matt has every reason to sound angry this morning because both he and Mr. G turned the peoples station into an advertisement station, while the people that made it their home got kicked out.
To you grown ignorant Dominicans…..Matt and Carlisle were both invited to the meeting and FAILED to attend yet still they choose to cry on the radio and act like it is a political thing. To all the ignorant people that worship the ground Matt and Carlisle walk on you should know MWAD received money yet still no media workers benefited (that suppose to be transparency). No one is saying congrats to the youth for taking a stand but and trying to do something positive. You all figure its best to bash and give negative comments. The world doesnt revolve around SKerrit and none of you all should care what party anyone supports once the job is done properly and unbiased. Let the young people do something positive without all the insensitive negative and ignorant comments.
Can we give the new media association a chance to step out? I just listened to the radio and clearly Matt and Carlisle are attempting to warp the minds of the general public even before the people have made a public statement. Why didn’t they call Mr. Richards? Why not invite a few members of the interim committee to discuss and provide insight?
Have an open mind to this new organization, after all 43 is MORE THAN 2!

Well I was told that a government insider (will not call names) negotiated for snacks for the group at the meeting. Plus it was held at the stadium, a government owned entity.

I don’t wish to be pessimistic or disparaging but having a well political hack like Charges Jong as part of this fresh organization forebodes difficulties. Check his background carefully. This man has no bona fide journalistic credentials. He’s just a nonentity in the world of journalism who makes political mischief against his party’s opponents.

They may use their radio platform to create confusion and chaos, but be on your guard. These fellas will try hard, MWAD is theirs because only they benefit from it. Not so much Carlisle but Matt sounding like sour grapes but is his own fault. I do not support Skerrit and his gang at all but Matt does not do any research, read and acts as if Q is his own. Since Angelo left Matt is sounding like warmed up grits from yesterday, as if he is Mr. Fine Foods only. That is so predictable, I switch off when I know their slot or the brewery or Muslim sore are coming. And even then he lets the advertisers do his work. I think this a step in the right direction. MWAD has been inoperative for quite sometime. Media personnel in Dominica need a strong group to represent them and help with the development of their career. The people cannot continue with an organization that is sleeping.

@Your Daily Guide. Their extremely casual attire was the first thing that caught my attention. I have learnt if you want people to take you serious,ly you have to dress and act appropriately as the occasion demands. Despite my severe skepticism , Charles Jong and all, I hope that they would pleasantly surprise me and make a positive difference for the good of the nation. Presently journalism reflects the rest of the society, reeks of divisive party politics.
Let me be the first to congratulate the newly named and rebranded Dominica Press Corps.
Going forward, it is my sincere wish that the duly elected executive will serve in their positions with pride, impartiality as it relates to the dissemination of information. That the executive also will DEFEND VIGOROUSLY, not only their Constitution, but more importantly, the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
There was never a comstitution? That’s the new culture of Dominica. If anything has to be done, it has to start afresh as if it never existed. What a shame?
It is a new association. They ought to start fresh. The fact remains that the MWAD is defunct. And there lies demand for fresh perspective, new leadership and further progress for media workers in Dominica. Allow these people to show us how serious they are. They have my blessing, media workers need this level of support, and judging by the total membership, the people are willing to get things done!
Pure pappy show! All journalists are afraid of themselves. The only persons that they feel that they can ask the relevant questions are members of the opposition. But the government that they elected to serve, none of them have the fortitude to ask any question on the management of the country!

Valid point Pascal. Many journalist have a particular political leaning and that is their right. I am not particularly fond of Roosevelt Skerrit and what he represents. Matt is lazy and has become complacent, He has allowed this to happen by default, so I am not surprised by this development. However, I can only support it once all the government controlled media are made available to all political parties on an equal basis and I would appreciate if this new association would issue a statement accordingly.
