New organization to “advance democracy” in Dominica

democracy nowA new organization has been formed with the aim, it says, of advancing the “principle of Democracy in the Commonwealth of Dominica.”

“Democracy for Dominica NOW” is based in Washington DC and in a release organizers say it was formed “in response to recent developments in Dominica.”

According to the organization these development “unmistakably revealed the need for an overhaul in the democratic processes in the country.”

On its agenda are political education, electoral reform, awareness of civic responsibility, among others.

“In addition, we recognize the need for the reassessment of the institutions which are supposed to function as pillars of Dominica’s democracy, and the necessity to make corrections where needed,” the release stated. “Further, we understand that there are many Dominicans who would like to participate in the affairs of our country but they do not have an organized way to do so.”

The organization hopes to form an organized platform for members so they will have an opportunity to “effectively petition and influence the government and people of Dominica for establishing Democracy and good governance in the country.”

Presently the organization is in it formative state, however there are members all over the US and also in Dominica.

“It comprises Dominicans and friends of Dominica throughout the diaspora who are committed to the promotion of political education, electoral reform, awareness of civic responsibility and democracy in the country,” the organization said. “We intend to collaborate with Dominicans both at home and abroad and allow them an opportunity to be intimately involved in the important matters and the democratic processes in Dominica.”

A website is presently being developed for the organization.

People of Dominica please put your thinking mind to work. Those people. in question are searching for fame, power, and recognition, which do not belong to them–their action is of complete dishonesty.

Just notice that there is no name to take responsibility for the message sent; if a person is at on for a good will, why is he or she, they are hiding behind the plan for that deed?

That is the reason we should know that, that plan is futile; and since God wants nothing to do with futility, this plan has already been destroyed–for the sake of our God fearing people in Dominica. May His Will and His alone be done!

Carrying placards in front of the U.N. in New York, highlighting our plight will have far more effect than demonstrating here at home. It would certainly put Dominica on the map. The same tactics could also be used on the bayfront in Roseau when international visitors come in on cruise ships. Even better if it provokes the S.S.U. to come out so visitors can take pictures of them.

Sure Ma Moses, they can take up from where Thompson Fontaine and his team left off, by travelling all over to present Dominica as the worst country in the world. They can also repeat the COHA debacle and then try to convince those of us who live here that they love this country and have our best interests at heart. I guess we must be really dumb.

Ma Moses, while they are in demonstration mode before the UN and others they mustn’t forget to include a protest against the Government of the US where they reside and where (I assume enjoy the best that democracy has to offer) for spying on its own private citizens and governments of other democratic countries. I believe Snowden is still a fugitive from his democratic country for bringing this to light.

From reading some of the comments here should I now conclude that contrary to recent posturings, Dominicans in the diaspora should have great influence on what goes on here?

They want to unseat Skeritt/DLP gov’t by crying foul. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the group they have been there all the time but divided. It’s just now that Gabu, Thomps, DAAS, Crisp, Douglas etc are coming together as one voice. Are they better managers than DLP?

Well they just might do well in the NEXT election if they plan proper strategy and not just talk vile. If they love democracy, well…The people have spoken and they lost the election! You either respect democracy or you don’t, you can’t speak from both sides of your mouth.

“Presently the organization is in it formative state, however there are members all over the US and also in Dominica.”

Is this a secret society? Who are the individuals who started the society and why did they chose to remain anonymous. I am really happy that we live in a society where a poor boy from Vieille Case can grow up to become Prime Minister of Dominica and that you do not have to have any type of structured higher education to become a leader and sit in Parliament. That we still live in a country where you can freely get to the polling stations and cast a vote for the leader of your choice. If is a society that will continue to promote these ideologies great, but if it is a society that is fighting for political power, take that “ish” somewhere else.

    One Love Dominicans!!!!

The election is done and it is time to move on and reform and evaluate.
We are not perfect and not even USA is . I can remember when Democratic Presidential candidate AL GORE had won Florida and was declared the winner of the elections versus Bush Sr. It had to take the supreme court to make the final decision. So Dominica is a beacon of democracy .

Those diasporans no matter what their color red green blue orange purple black or white or albino; some of them think that they alone that know stuff and can come in vote and go back. send barrel and talk stupidness.

These people who are hiding behind a newly formed organization are telling the nation, the region and the world that we the people of Dominica have no democratic rights. Is that correct? Let’s talk democracy. We have radio stations that do nothing but try to stir up trouble and insult the Prime Minister at every turn, yet their licenses are never revoked. We have members of parliament who have openly advocated killing other people, because of their political affiliation. That by the way would very likely be considered a hate speech in some countries. We just had free and fair Democratic elections in the land. I guess the elections results were not what you all expected, so there is no democracy in the land. Some politicians are calling for all kinds of demonstrations for no other reasons than to create strife ( trouble) in the land yet some of you in the diaspora want the world to believe there is no democracy in Dominica. How much more democratic can we be?

They are not concerned about democracy, they are just ganging up with other persons and organizations to create confusion in the country so they can impose their will on the people. They have absolutely no respect for the will of the people. The people spoke loudly and clearly on December 8th but it’s too hard for them to swallow.

Well the opposition must be really retarded if no body came from overseas to vote for them. If they came to vote then it’s their democratic right like in other democracies like the US & UK you go home to vote as long as you are on the voters list. Maybe the list needs to be cleaned up but it’s their right.

I want to be a member of this organization but before I make any commitment they have to assure me that they will not be another talking organization but one that is willing to go to the UN in New York city, with our placards held high, as we seek help to set our country free. We also need to follow it up by going to the White House with the same request as we cry for a stop of the sale of our passports to criminals, Free and Fair Election, Investigation of the GON Emmanuel issue, investigation of the Labor Commissioner report and the huge pile of issues that threatening to bring our country down. I am ready guys but I want to make sure we are ready to act and not just talk.

If they are really interested in DA, tell them to come DA to make a difference, come to invest, come to contribute. we don’t need no Chapel to stay abroad and pull strings to dictate what happens down here and how it happens.

The problem with such organizations is most of you live in different democracies (places where you can course the police officers, exercise certain rights among other things). So while some of the ideas may be beneficial to us in DA, most of it is not applicable or practical because we are just not prepared mentally and financially to fulfil you ideas, you will try to force the Government to implement thing which are good but not a priority at this time but may frustrate your group because to you it so basic (as you may say A NO BRAINER).
My take is if you want to really contribute to DA come home and live with us and see our reality, not stay in the diaspora and try to influence actions that you are pretty-much immune too.

I hope this new organization is not like another market for only talk. The most effective way to get Skeritt’s attention is to follow him all over the word and where ever he lands have a demonstration. According to a caller on Q95, all the pressure that is put on Skeritt is localized and non effective. The newly formed democratic organization, must develop a more decisive approach, a destructive plan, or else, Skeritt will not only laugh and reproach it , but also ridicule it, in his usual manner. I wish the organization God’s help, because many have failed over the years.

It is sad that this is found necessary but also very understandable and I welcome it. I remember as a child our church, at the time of confirmation, would give every one a copy of the catechismus giving the principles of christian believe and learn it by rote.. I would like the govt. to do something similar and provide every school pupil with a copy of our constitution. That should not be too expensive and I’m sure could be contained in a small booklet. If the govt. don’t want to do it I would be happy to make a contribution to put this in place. That is as important to me. if not more important for our people as knowing the catechismus.
