Chairperson of the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Coalition for the Protection of Children and Youth, Delroy Williams has said more must be done to curb violence in society.

He spoke to DNO in light of a brutal attack on a young lady at her workplace in Roseau by her boyfriend on Monday, November 23.

He described the attack as an eye opener for individuals in society.

“I think this incident is an eye opener to all us that we should be doing more, not just in terms of protest or social media outrage but in terms of formal discussions at the workplaces, at our schools, within the family itself and really and truly look at what contributes to us being tolerant of violence acts and what contributes to us accepting events like this,” he said. “We also need to address how we as a society socialize our young boys and our young girls to relate to one another and I think the impact of such discussions is not one that will be felt in the short term but is something we can look forward to seeing the impact in the long term.”

According to Williams, the NGO Coalition stands firmly in its belief of stamping out all forms of violence particularly gender-based violence.

“And in our society, as Dominicans, we need to do all in our efforts to curb this disturbing trend,” he stated.

Furthermore, he indicated that what is being experienced today is a culture of violence engrained in the society and communities.

He said the NGO Coalition empathizes with the young lady who was attacked and also with and her family but also said alleged perpetrator must be examined.

“What could have led him psychologically or emotionally to react to the situation in that regard?” Williams queried.

Additionally he said, “We are not totally aware of the entire situation, so it will be very difficult to make a proper statement, however, we want to condemn all acts of violence especially as it relates to weaponry and so forth…”

    You all need to do that (demonstrate) in greater numbers against your corrupt government. What you all need to do is not being done. The problem starts from the top! not from the bottom.

    I do not know their age, if they are married or not and the cause of his abnormal behavior.
    It may have commenced as a domestic squabble, an argument. She may have threatened or decided to leave him. If they cohabit, she may have asked him to leave or thrown him out. He/she may have another partner but he is jealous that she has one.
    There are some who are aggressive, jealous and lack discipline, to mention a few reasons for their anti-social behavior.
    It would be interesting to know why he went to her workplace and viciously attacked her. There is no excuse for what he did.
    After doing so, he may feel remorseful and go after her to make-up. Those things occur.
    When people meet for the first time, thereafter, they should evaluate each other for compatibility. Too many overlook this important aspect. This is another reason why there are many separations and divorces today. Some cause disagreements, hatred, injuries and fatalities.
    I expect he was arrested.

    To stop the spread of violence in our communities today we need to investigate its causes.

    Racism as it exists in the U.S.A. and Canada is a cause of a certain amount of violence. When dislike or hate exists between people it does not take much for emotions to explode.

    Added to this we have a small per cent of police officers with a sense of entitlement who think they have a divine right to shoot anybody who crosses them. In a American city where there is already a sense of inequality and discrimination a cop killing across the color line is all that is needed to plunge the city into a massive riot that will last a week;

    Loose and permissive gun laws are putting guns in the streets and hands of angry and mentally ill people;

    What is needed today is a return to the Bible and a revival of true Christianity.

      A lack of respect for womanhood caused by porn, and the scandalous way in which many of them are seen dressed in public. It has caused women to be treated as sex objects.

      False values that measure the worth of people by what they have, or the control they can exert over others rather than by what they give and contribute.

      These are the things that create the violence in our society.

      These things can only be countered and eliminated by people who allow God to fill their hearts with HIS love! What is needed to overcome violence today is for God to visit His people in revival fires, and renew His church.

      Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Evangelist.
