Nigerians living in island will come together this week to celebrate their nation’s 54th anniversary of Independence.

There are a number of activities planned to celebrate that event between October 1 and 3.

A member of the Nigerian Committee in Dominica, Cassandra Sonma Ukaobi, told DNO that a friendly football match, free health fair and dinner are among those activities on the books.

“On the 1st (of October), we will have a friendly (football) match between Dominica and Nigeria at the Goodwill Savannah and on the 2nd we will be having a free health fair at Public Service Union,” she explained. “On the 3rd we will be having a dinner night from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm, it will cover the showing of African fashion, drama, dance, music and African foods.

The dinner event will be held at the Public Service Union Building on Valley Road.

She also made mention of t-shirts which will be available on sale on the night of the dinner at an affordable price.

According to her, a special award ceremony will be held for persons who have contributed positively towards the Nigerian Committee and community on the island.

“It is not limited to Nigerians, Dominicans will also receive awards,” she noted.

Ukaobi encourages Dominicans to participate in all the events, especially in the free health fair.

“We will be giving a free health fair, it is very important to check out their health … to check up their blood pressure, temperature,” she said.

The Nigerian Committee in Dominica last celebrated Nigeria’s independence in 2012.

About 150 Nigerians in Dominica are expected to attend the functions.

Nigeria achieved independence on October 1, 1960.

It is such a pleasure to socialise with our Nigerian brothers and sisters who are here in Dominica. This shows that we are coming around as a people and welcoming our people from the Mother land. I know that there are some of us who still think that we are not Africans but Africa is the land where all black people descended from, whether you are light brown or in between. We should be proud of our race because all other races came from us. Africans peopled the earth before colonisation. (RECOMMENDED READING: THE JOURNEY OF MAN by Spencer Wells, a European). We really need to read more about who we are. We are a great people and are also very intelligent. We won’t get our story from the schools because we were taught and are still being taught European history. We have to do our own research. Egypt, which is in Africa, is filled with our story. The pyramids, built by our ancestors are aligned with the heavens. Our ancestors left our story in stones (heiroglyphics) inside the pyramids. We were taught that the Egyptian symbols are evil but that was to keep the truth from us. Anyway there is so much to learn that one does not even know where to begin. One thing that I know, our story did not start with Adam and Eve. Our story goes back millions of years ago.
