No Royal visit for Dominica

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, are expected to visit a number of Caribbean states

Dominica has been excluded from the list of Caribbean states that will be hosting a member of Britain’s Royal Family next year as the Commonwealth celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, will visit the Caribbean in 2012 as part of a global tour celebrating 60 years of the Queen on the throne.

Buckingham Palace has announced that they will visit the Queen’s 15 realms and other destinations with close links to the United Kingdom next year. However they will not be calling on Dominica.

The pair of royals will visit Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. Meanwhile Prince Harry will visit Jamaica, Belize and the Bahamas.

It is understood that the reason for Dominica’s exclusion is because the Commonwealth of Dominica is a republic with its own head of state. Queen Elizabeth II is not the head of state of Dominica but she is the head of state of all the other member states of the OECS and Jamaica, Belize, the Bahamas, Barbados and the British Overseas Territories.

Although a visit is being made to Trinidad and Tobago, that twin island republic became independent as part of the monarchical system. Dominica was the only Commonwealth Caribbean state to go directly into independence as a republic.

The Diamond Jubilee marks the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne following the death of her father, King George VI on February 6, 1952.

When it was reliased that Patrick John had brought Dominica to shame and disrepute, once the Dominican pasport was seen in any foreign immigration department it was problem for the holder. Thank God Mamo came to the rescue and gave us back our pride and honour. This article shows that again that Dominica is not respected in the international arena. Who is going to give us back our dignity and respect as a nation? Dominica needs to move from under these grey clouds that are theatening its acceptance in the international community.

What is the big deal about this. Look at it this way .You will be saving some tax dollars that you would have to spend on security and other events related to this. The monarchy is an outdated institution which that provides no real function. Say it like it is.

I for think that monarchy should be abolished a long time ago,but alot of us except for the Kalinagos should know and accept the reason for us being here in this beautiful land called Waitukubuli it’s because of these colonisers. While we choose to bash them as i think they deserve being bashed, our black leaders are treating us no better, all that’s happening is they are being replaced by our own.We must also remember that the monarchy represents a role in the present shitstem of things in that their presence brings a certain level of international recognition to all countries they visit. That’s the reality of this present world shitstem, can’t avoid it.So the real question is why are they not visiting our island?Given the position and the manner in which Roosevelt Medard Skerrit is ruling the nation and all the ridiculous statements he’s making is an insult and disrespect to all right thinking democratic people. Can’t we see the countries and peoples that Skerrit is aligning himself with?I think this guy has lost it and is gone mad chasing the dollars by any means, this is not to our benefit but only to him,his pocket and all those surrounding him. He’s simply prostituting the nation for his personal gain.

waypapa pas febe, i find your comments ones of wonder, i know that the caribbean has been given aid from the US and the UK, i think half your police force is kitted with american stuff, and i know that the british gave aid constantly after many of the devasting hurricanes over the years, i paid my taxes to the dominican goverment when i was there, and yes i did return my child to school here, as do many dominicans who have family in the UK as well as the US and canada, i know and i am friends with many children whom where educated here in England, and they have gone on to do very well in other countries as well as Dominica, i think as well that your pm at the moment was educated in Mississippi if i am not mistaken, and he certainly seems to know who he is,but thanks for the comments and as my child was born in dominica which makes them as domincan as you i surely will be returning, and will remeber not to come to yours for tea,,, big smile

The reason that was given that is Dominica being a Republic is pure crap. What is Trinidad and Tobago? Isn’t it the REPUBLIC OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO; TRINIDAD HAS A PRESIDENT JUST LIKE DOMINICA. But who cares about these royals anyway; if they were to visit the Government would have to go do all kinds of things; spending money we already don’t have.
We are INDEPENDENT, so the royals can take a ROYAL HIKE FOR ALL I CARE.

    December 17, 2011

All Independent nation of the caribbean should get rid of the monarchy once and for all.A republic is a nation state in which the supreme power and authority is derived from and vested in the people on there elected represntative.one of the fundamental featurs of a republic is that vestiges of aristocratic power based on family racial background are eradicated. The monarchy remains symbolic ofprivilage over people.of chance over endeavour, of beingsomething, rather than doing something. We evelate to the apex of our society something selected not on the basis of talent or achivement but because of genes.unlike nearly every other democracy in the world/ the british constitution treats us as subjects, notsoverin

    Dear Dominicans,
Stop the foolish talk about it doesn’t matter. Truth is we want exposure for our country. this is an exposure that in years gone by was customary. Now they have us. Why us? Why are we the only English speaking once colony that they have now rejected? This should be your food for thought.

    Don’t like it? #BiteME!

    • Kazimi
      December 19, 2011

What exposure? I am normally on the middle road of things, but this, no! I refuse to set foot in England. The British Government has never done anything meaningful for Dominica and the territories it currently holds in the Caribbean, Still! Remember Montserrat and the Volcano? The British refused to take them.

The Caribbean has paid so many taxes to the crown pre-independence to get little or nothing coming back in to re-invest in the islands.

Even further blows from The British they have impose the highest tax rate to the Caribbean for air travel. It is cheaper to fly from London to Hawaii than it is to fly to the Caribbean. We do not need them. Every tree starts from a seed/stem and Dominica we need to grow to be a big tree by working together. Stop worrying what other people are doing with their personal life, but rather build the country and strengthen our relationship with our Caribbean neighbors.

Talking about neighbors, in the 40’s the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique was given the same rights as any other French person born in France. Full rights (British) have never been extended to any of the British territories. So, a day’s work for a Dominican person was paid very much less compared to that of someone living in Martinique or England as they enjoyed the same rights as French people.

I am not saying that Guadeloupe or Martinique is without problems.

Who cares tell them go find a job. People in England work and pay taxes to them then they dress nice and spend you all money. Dominica is not missing anything so just tell them they are not wellcome. (love from NYC)

These are just human beings like everyone else with a title, so what if they are not coming to Dominica? same difference.
The only royal visit Dominica needs right now is that of the KING OF KINGS by way of the HOLY SPIRIT of GOD to heal the place of all the ills going around lately such as, robbery, murder, drug infestation, corruption, strife to name a few.
Stop worshiping people. Dominica needs tobe on her knees right now in humility before God so He can Heal the land. Royal visit kisa!

we are free to spectulate now……
let’s suppose that they are not pleased with the side that their mouth, ears, eyes, etc.Lennox Honeychurch is holding in the politics business.

Honestly, in many ways we dont even realise that our mentality is way ahead of most of the caribbean islands by way of diagnosing their tricky system of domination.

While they are keeping away from us, we dont have to isolate them because we have a lot of reparations discussions to have with them.

British royality is one institution that greatly benefitted from the slave trade and slavery.

They might be saving us of the useless expence that we shouldnt afford at any time.

At the same time we wish them well…..it’s such a pity that same human beings should claim entitlement at the expense of other human beings on earth….that’s why their culture is so pathetic

The Almighty will rise his people above such atrocious mentality…let us Waitikubulians work together to deserve true redemption from all oppressors…black and white and chinese and arabs and spanish and…..

Hey who cares about whether Royal Family visits Dominica or not? we should be proud not to be bowing to the same people who enslaved our ancestors and treated them like animals…they need to visit the poor people of some parts of Africa who are dying of hunger and bring food, clothing and shelter to them…instead they have money wasting on visiting their former colonized territories so that they [the British] can feel important and enpowered once more…Royal what? would they bring food to our empty tables? Man to heck with the British eh!

So Edward and Sophie are not visiting Dominica, and some of us are offended and some say ‘who cares’. I’m indifferent about Dominica not being part of their itenerary.
The UK will never say the real reason(s), they are to P.C

Having lived in the UK for 48 years, I have never seen a ‘Royal’ in person and never had the wish to do so (No I never camped outside Buck Palace). Anyway, Edward and Sophie are not the most popular royals. Harry not visiting Dominica is more disappointing, but I’ll live.

After reading this article, my husband said,
‘I remember when the Queen visited Jamaica in 1962 and came to Lucy, Hanover to turn on a fountain. She got off the boat, turned the fountain on, and turned around and went back on the boat. All the little money people had, they spent buying new outfits and they never even get to see/meet the woman’.

Royal visits cost many (lots of money). Can we afford to waste much needed monies that we could spend elsewhere?

The US and UK are the world’s 1st and 7th largest economies in the world – the UK was the 6th last year but has just been passed by Brazil – the UK is heading down. the US remains at #1 for just a few more years, projected to be passed by China by 2016, and then projected to be passed by India by 2045. why are some of you people so backward thinking? there’s a new world order – get with it!

Whether some see it as sour grapes or not, this is a blessing in disguise. Dominica has saved itself tens of thousands of dollars! These folks only care about themselves. Britain hasn’t done much for Dominica, so why are we catering to them. They are a reminder of Dominica’s past under the British… they sucked the blood from our island… taking our limes, cocao, bananas, and other resources to repackage them and sell the refisnished products back to us in the form of L.Rose grenadine syrup, Cadbury’s chocolates or Ovaltine/Milo (although by Nestle) and many more… Not to forget all those Bedfords, Austins and what have you. Dominica, like all Br. territories serve as perpetual markets for British products. THey’ve indoctrinated and brainwashed us in thinking that they have save us and did so much. If you compare how Martinique/Guadeloupe have feared under the French, by comparison, you’d wonder why didn’t we get independence sooner. Sooooo, forgot the royal family. And yeah, get their pics/names off our hospital, streets and money! This is mental slavery… let’s emancipate ourselves from this colonial bondage!

It’s ironic I am reading this story today and just yesterday I was watching a special on Cablevision about this guy in Grenada that wants to do away with the queen as head of state and his argument is pretty convincing – and it sounds vaguely familiar to ours when we went independent. The argument basically boils down to this – what is the purpose of attaining independence from your colonial master, saying you’re free, but you still have to go to the colonial master to approve of some things you do – like your judicial system. When I listened to this man make his arguments, I was even prouder to be a Dominican because we are indeed accountable to ourselves, we are truly an independent country. All those other islands have to run to the queen – we don’t, and that’s a good thing. Furthermore, what good is it, anyway. Look at this issue facing Caribbean tourism now, with the APD tax the English has subjected the Caribbean to. What is that connection to the queen worth – it sure ain’t getting us anywhere – they still not taking away the tax which will cause serious harm to the tourism industry of the Caribbean. So what good is it to say the queen is your head of state and you look up to her as such? She sure not helping you with your economy. E pas voh patat

Please it is easy. We all find some plauible reason why we should not do something. Why not the royals? We were once a british colony like the other countries and this is not a good reason enough to visit us while trekking THE ENTIRE English-speaking CARIBBEAN.

There is more to it than this, if the royals have to read the “FINE PRINT” to find a reason not to visit Dominica.

    We are the BLACK SHEEP.

  54. .
    December 16, 2011

There must be a particular reason as to why they are not visiting Dominica. Not that Dominicans feel bad about it or anything but surely there has to be a significant reason why Dominica was left out. I do not think that it was a case of ugly stepchild, but it is something that we should be curious about.

From whom Dominican gained Independence from?If not England then Dominica should not be Commonwealth Of Dominica. The royal families are not visiting Dominica, and a lot of you keep saying I don’t care, that might be true, and on the other hand, where the high court of the Caribbean is, the Privy Council (ENGLAND) can Dominica hang someone without the high court know. I don’t think so…so the excuse for the royal family is not coming to Dominica. I think it’s very lame! When visitors look around Dominica, Dominica is in a very extremely, unacceptable, poor condition and with lots of rats spreading leptospirosis,I believed that is one of the reason royal family excuses…

Ah, the laughable children of Dominica. Look at them crying, yelling, and flailing their virtual arms like schoolchildren in the yard. “We’ve been dissed,” one says. Others attack the family with vehemence, though they have the audacity to claim they do not care–you can practically see the childish tears streaming down their faces. Others who attack the Family’s lack of a visit clearly would be the first to praise them if they DID come.

As if we would be worth more–or less–were the Royal Family to have visited us. As if the reason given–our independence–is utterly irrelevant.

    December 16, 2011

As I read this article I ask myself whether or not DNO actually believe what they wrote as the reason why Dominica was left out. T would be very interesting to find out the source of DNO’s information. Even up to this point I am still laughing.
“ Hii chien mais dir dai blanc”- The royal family may not be my favorite people but I can’t deny the immense influence there is within the royal family. To those who would prefer to evaluate the issue on emotions , with racial epithets and insinuations maybe it is time to wake up and realize that our destiny is no longer in the hands of masa but yours. It is total ignorance to state that we don’t need the royal visit when we are trying to promote Dominica as a tourist destination. Some people conveniently brought up the issue of slavery so as to avoid the possibility of anything that maybe hurt their partisan pride. Why induce the issue of slavery when we are every day thinking of ways to bring European and north American visitors to the island- needless to say most of our aspiring visitors would be Caucasian. I am afraid that governments will come and go but unless we change our mentality, that ignorance and Neg Mawon mentality our country will go nowhere.

I was little boy when a member of the Royal family came to Dominica and that was way after our Independence so I am somewhat confused that Dominica was excluded for the reason stated by DNO (DNO did not indicate the source). If that information came from the Royal family then this is in my opinion a bold face lie. I am trying to make sense of this – I thought about air access but then I said Montserrat though a still a British colony does not have air access; Further more these people have their own jets and or ships so access became a non issue.

Was Dominica snubbed for any other reason- could it be our foreign policy? is it that the “Rogue Government” label a factor? Is it that our open declaration of NATO as racist and the open support for the Kadaffi regime also a contributing factor. If we are to grow like Barbados for example these are the type of issues that we must confront with honesty and responsibility. If it is that the royal family has reacted to those issues then as responsible Dominicans looking for the tourism dollar we must be concerned of the full impact the above noted issues may have on Dominica tourism. As promoted “ tourism is everybody’s business” it is the opportune moment to evaluate our actions.

I dislike coming across as political but it is difficult to put the cards on the table without offending the people who would rather cherry pick at the issue. I am old enough to know when an excuse is not a reason. I am hoping that fuel conservation will not become another excuse. If not yet done I believe that the government of Dominica should demand an explanation from the Royal family.

    • December 16, 2011

Why not say the reason is because of your PM affiliation with Chavez and the rest do not blame DNO

Let me see if I can differentiate between a royal tourist and an average tourist. When the royal tourist come we foot the bill, we spend on them. When the average tourist come, they foot their own bill, they spend on us.

Second point, you talk about Kaddafi and all that but can Dominica dictate to Britain who they can do business with. Check the records and see if the british wasn’t doing big business with Kaddafi.

Further more, Kaddafi aid does not come with the conditions that we have to accept buggery first.

Dominicans are speaking with one voice that we doh need no ‘royals’ coming to our shore to make us feel like people. We are an independent people, period !!!

      December 16, 2011

The royals are not coming to Dominica because Dominicans are a truly independent people – we do not swear allegiance to the queen. Dominica’s foreign policy notwithstanding, the reason is as plain as that. It is the reason why Dominica was not invited to the royal wedding of William and Kate – we do not recognize the queen as our sovereign head of state. We have a President who is – that makes us a Republic. These other islands “say” they’re independent, but by swearing allegiance to the queen and making provisions withing their respective constitutions for the position of her representative, i.e. governor general, they are not really and truly independent – they’re still tethered to the monarchy. I am proud to say that I am accountable to myself and Dominica – not the queen.

When you suggest that it may have to do with our foreign policy, then I say too bad – Dominica is entitled to its foreign policy, as is England, good or bad. You fail to recognize that England has supported criminal governments in the past, present and most certainly will continue to do so in the future. You mention Gaddafy – I was never no fan of the man, but surely you know England played a major role in his ouster, which resulted in his murder – and that’s what it is, because now the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, has called it a possible war crime – are you going to start a movement demanding some sort of accountability from the British government in having a hand in a war crime?

      • Talkin Point
        December 16, 2011

Thanks for your genuine response. I was sure that I would be sectionalized into a political party mercenary thus the reason I ask the question and did not make no such accusations. I not so naïve to think that the British royalty or government is clean and without corruption , mischief or deception. It would be futile to spend time looking at world politics instead of what I believe could or could not impact Dominica. What Britain did to kadaffi is totally irrelevant to the issue. In reiteration it worthwhile to look at the issue with intelligent perspectives not emotional nor with partisan diatribes. All I’m saying the excuse written by DNO is obviously vague and without reasoning and so that leaves an opening for evaluation of other possible factors.

its very sad that you all have this “we dont care” attitude, and to be be honest thats what you say when you do care, being british and having lived in DA for a while, i think you all have to see the real reason, back in 2007 HMS portland came to Dominica, and your PM skeritt snub an invite on board, and at the national day, the captin of the portland was sat at the back of the stage and skeritt did nothing but praise the venezulans, not even thanking the captin and crew of the portland, when you all forget it is the british navy that sat off the coast of DA ready to give aid after hurricane dean.
you also have to remeber your PM prefers to link himself with Dictators, like chvez, castro, and when he was alive,Gaddafi, not really the sort of company the queen of england wants to be associated with, so dont be all quick to give us british and our queen a hard time, think before you all start to have a go, think about who your PM keeps close to him.

@ doh melay, see this is what i mean, what sort of nasty thing to say, “go back to your country” you are all to quick to tell people who have come to DA to try and start a life and business, and encourage growth and employment to leave, which will not maake dominica a desirable place to come, you have to stop being bitter and embrace foriegn people into your country, just like barbados, st lucia and antigua, st kitts and tobago and trinidad, dispite there reputation for violence, people are encouraged to move there, Dominica has the advantage at the moment of not being too violent and being completely under developed, you should be advertising to the world, that DA is the place to be, but no its just constant negativity, and people like you are putting it on the world wide web for all to see.
by the way i have left DA now, with my dominican husband and child, and we have moved back to england, which made me very sad, but as broke as you may think england is, there is still very good employment which both my husband and i have, and education here for my daughter is the best and free, but i do miss DA very much and do hope to return for good one day, because not all Dominicans are like yourself thank goodness

@massacre you should care that your goverment may be putting the reputation of dominican people on the line, and making getting into to countries like the USA,UK europe and Australia, nion impossible, due to the fact that anyone in the middle east or china can just buy a dominican passport, not good in a day ang age of terroisum is it really, think about all the people who have got family in these countries, or people that are applying for other country citizenship, it will make their lives a misery as well as a chance of being sent back to DA, have a heart, just because you may not want to leave DA does not mean no body else wants to.

Without the OECS, Dominica would have gone to the dogs; Wonder why dictators and wannabes love Her so much? They know She’s totally independent and they think they can do whatever they want with Her.

Do not feel isolated and intimidated my fellow Dominicans. These people are not gods, their ancestors were our slave masters. We do not need them here.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s more than that. Brits are very crooked especially the upper class society. They are not straight forward people. I’ve spent time with them in the UK so I can tell you about them.

ahhh muslim always like anyone would listen to your views you no nothing but your arrogant ways, my husband is a Dominican and works in london, and has discovered for himself that your lot are nothing but a bunch of arrogant nutters that still have slaves in there countries, dont tell me they dont he sees it everyday, and crooked well it takes a crook to know a crook.
and the dominican people intimidated, man you do not know your country people very well, the last thing i would ever say about the people of dominica is that they could be intimidated…..give up the muslim crap and be a true dominican not a wanna be arab

It’s because you and your husband are two who suffer from mental retardation. Are you white by the way?

      • brit biird
        December 18, 2011

thats not very nice is it? retarded, is that not a slur on the mentally handicapped, ahhh yes i am forgetting in muslim countries handicapped people are murdered for there condition, not loved and cared for like they are in the uk, how very gestapo, but i am sure you dont even know what that means.
you know i have seen you on here on many occasins talking complete s**t mate the reason you left england was that you probably got ya ass kicked daily with that attitude you have, unlike my husband who has a fabulous job here, has had the oppurtunity to gain more qualifications, which any dominicans can do if there heart is in it, his job and mine enables us to travel the world on holidays, so my child can discover all countries customs and cultures, and not be blinkered like the idiot you are. i tell you what when we come to DA to visit family how about you meet up with us and i show you pictures of the devastation muslims have caused innocent families by exploding coward terroist bombs all over the world, and of course causing the war which has devastated the whole worlds Financial state, apart from the arab states who have made money by jacking up oil prices.
And you know what i do not know why dominicans put up with your rubbish, you have no belief in them, you always have to say they are down trodden, i spent enough time in DA to see that Dominicans are the most proud people i have met, even when i went through da for the first time years ago, they may not have much but there homes where taken care of they offered you what ever they had, and as i said before they are not people who fear or become intimidated, so if you listen to your neighbours instead of mecca then you may have a better life mate, and prehaps you might even get a friend, o yes and by the way i am as white as snow!!!!

Hahahahaha don’t make me laugh. When the Queen made her visit a while back we were a Republic state then. Well can you imagine the money tax payers have saved on preparing for a Royalty visit.

We good, Dominicans I will say one thing to you. My Job allows me to visit alot of different countries and we have no idea how blessed we are in so many different ways.We have alot to be grateful for. So I don’t think we give a rats if the Royals leave DA out of their all expense paid vacation on the already almost crippled taxpaying British public.

Thee Commonwealth of Dominica do not have a Governor, they decided INDEPENDENCE is just that. The history of this Country gives you the view that this island wanted to be with the French.By the time she could leave the Monarchy she said BYE in a DIGNIFIED and DIPLOMATIC way, your history is rich don’t you ever forget.Don’t be like the TOOTHLESS ones, you are able to GOVERN yourself like over here somebody always have to write to her Majesty, like they really care.
