Nurses in Dominica were reminded of their mission on Friday morning and were told that their job is not an ordinary one.
Today (Friday) has been designated as Nurses’ Appreciation Day and nurses from around the island gathered at the Princess Margaret Hospital for a special ceremony to mark the occasion.
They were all given small tokens of appreciation for their work.
Speaking at the ceremony, Principal Nursing Officer, Ceasarina Ferrol, thanked the nurses for their work and urged them to continue working toward the development of the nursing profession.
“Being a nurse is not an ordinary job, it takes an extraordinary person to be a nurse,” she told the gathered nurses. “There are quite a few challenges at this time but we know that we can surmount these challenges if we put our heads and hands together and remain committed.”
She reminded them of their mission as nurses which is to “provide quality, preventive and curative health services to patients/clients in a professional, holistic and cost effective manner in the context of the national health policy.”
“Health care will be provided through the co-ordinated services of competent and motivated nurses in collaboration with other health care professionals, support staff and public or private organisations in a customer friendly environment,” Ferrol said.
Every year Nurses’ Week is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Florence Nightingale.
Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820.
She has been recognized as the founder of modern nursing.
She came to prominence while serving as a nurse during the Crimean War, where she tended to wounded soldiers.
Nightingale was dubbed “The Lady with the Lamp” for making it a habit of making rounds at night.
Hi Im a nurse in the UK, I would like to mention another nurse named Mary Seacole her birthday is 14 th May. This nurse was nursing the sick and the poor at the same time as Florence Nightingale, this lady was poor and undertook the same duties as F Nightingale however never as much praise for her.
As far as my eyes can see and what I am aware of nurses work 12 to 13 hours a night and the State has the audacity to insult them by giving them $20 what they classify as night nourishment. Most of them do not have a convenient place to take a nap. Some of the tutors also have preferential treatment for some trainees and also political victimization. We are in need of foreign tutors. for example (A), (C), (F).(E),and (L) the government need to check on them for more information they need to be properly scrutinize
What can I say but do your best with what you have to work with,. Blessings.
