OBITUARY – Catherine Lawrence

Catherine Lawrence

Mrs. Catherine Maria Lawrence went on to be with God on Friday January 13, 2012 in New York.

She was 81.

She taught in Dominica government schools for 20 years from 1950 to 1970 and taught in Brooklyn schools from 1970 to 1995.

She was married for 45 years to Sylvester Lawrence who was deceased in 1996.

Left  to mourn are her eight children, three step-children, 15 grand-children, two great-grand children, several cousins and a host of friends and acquaintances.

Besides her academic education at Brooklyn College, earning both a BA and a MA degree in Education, she possesed a prolific imagination as an avid tutor of Mathematics and book reading, while helping her own children and others in their pursuit for higher education.

She was also known in Dominica as a Girl Guide leader and tailor who sewed clothing for others.

Indeed, she was a generous lady who left her mark on scores of people in Dominica and the USA.

Condolence to the family. Miss Lawrence taught me in Roseau Mix Infant School. I remember her along with Miss Elwin, Miss Taverner, and Miss Robinson. These were the teachers who help set our foundation. Some 20 years ago, I met her in New York at a store she turned to me and said that she knew me, sure enough she was right. She was a wonderful teacher and person. Jah bless. R.I.P.
