UPDATE: ODM warns impact of Irma could be ‘catastrophic;’ calls for preparation

The Office of Disaster Management (ODM) continues to monitor the movement of Hurricane Irma towards the Lesser Antilles.

At 5 pm on Thursday, Hurricane Irma was upgraded to a major hurricane of category three. The system is located over the eastern Atlantic about 1760 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and moving west north west near 12mph with maximum sustained winds near 115 mph. The center of the system is projected to move just northeast of the area by Tuesday into Wednesday of next week.

‘Irma’ is expected to strengthen to a Major Hurricane by then making it an extremely dangerous Atlantic hurricane. The impacts could be catastrophic.

Interests in Dominica are advised to monitor the progress of this system and to make all the necessary preparations as Irma continues to move towards the Lesser Antilles.

The hurricane is about six (6) days away from the islands and uncertainties in projection exist.

Nonetheless, all residents are warned to complete all preparations and continue to closely monitor the progress of ‘Irma.’

The ODM together with the local MET Service will continue to keep the public updated.

As a precaution, Shelter Managers are advised to secure keys to shelters and be prepared to open those shelters when asked to do so by the Office of Disaster Management.

All Sub-Committees should have plans in place in the event of a response to a strike by Irma.

Residents should not wait until the final hour to purchase required commodities i.e. dried food and water.

ME, you are heartless, don’t you know that most people in the world who have animals regard them as members of their family and those same animals have more loyalty than some of us shitty humans ever will. I hope that DA is safe during this time. I have been to your island and I trust that you survive this hurricane. My best friend lives in DA and I pray for her safety and yours.

The storm is days away and you have already started calling down catastrophe upon the nation…Yes maximum preparation…that I can understand…
Is not there a great GOD who speaks to the winds…BE STEAL…
Life and death is in the power of our words whether we know it or not….
Isn’t it a christian nation….The saints need to take the lead on that one…
Be strong my people…GOD is in control…
    GOD bless….

Catastrophe is decided by the scientific information gathered in monitoring the storm. It is not decided by your holier than thou fairy tale grandmother superstition!. He calls it as it is get ready because reading psalms will not help you if it bears down on us.

I have questions for ODM . What about our beloved pets like house dogs and cats what are we suppose to do with them? . most shelters don’t allow them and shelter managers are ignorant and uneducated about the love we have for our furry friends .. Are we suppose to leave them to die or will we allow to take them with us if push comes ? Waiting on a response please.thank you .

You and your furry friends go find somewhere to shelter. The thing is , animals were created to live in the wild and man was created to hunt animals down in order to feed his family. But, humans over the years captured some of those wild beasts, domesticated them and try to make them feel like they belong on the same mattress like them. Leave those animals alone, they can take care of themselves better than you and I. You and your horses, cats and dogs stay outside during a natural disaster and see which one is more likely to survive.
