Opposition Leader raises concerns over Marigot Hospital

A section of the Marigot Hospital
A section of the Marigot Hospital

Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, has written to Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, raising concerns over the Marigot Hospital.

The institution was shut down recently due to mold and fungus infestation of the building which housed the facility.

A community meeting was held in Marigot on June 9, 2016 to address the issue.

Based on the meeting, Linton wrote Skerrit on the matter.

Don’t worry a ‘malcacar’ doh take one of the ministers yet, landing at’Douglas Charles airport, from one of their ‘business trips, and need immediate medical attention. It hasn’t come home yet…when it reaches home they will understand the urgency of a state of the art health facility in close proximity to an airport. Sad day in this country. Pierro and Rosie must be hating on that nonsense….

Some of you people are so negative! This has nothing to do with party and politics. We are speaking about human beings and their lives. Isn’t it a shame that for such a large constituency we do not have a decent hospital? The Marigot Hospital not only serves the people of Marigot only, but Carib Territory to Calibishie….or the entire country ( taken into consideration accidents that have happened along the way). Don’t forget that we also, have the airport not more than 5 minutes away. What is the ECCAA input in all of this? By all rights the airport should be have been closed until the situation is addressed and when fixed, will be given the green light to reopen. So it’s not a Lennox or an Eddison thing…it’s a NATIONAL priority and I believe it should be treated as such. It’s time the people’s plight be heard because this is not the first time that they have been complaining about this Hospital. Remember Dominica is not for one set…it’s for all of US!!

The people of Marigot must realize that the days of Zaboca and Savarin are no more. Tony and Simeon are talking, Government is talking, the official opposition is writing, but the most important sector i.e the people themselves are very quiet. The people appear to be waiting for a deliverer, maybe Matt, Blessings, DNO, Angello will save them from the oppressive Skeritt. Why is it during the general elections , the people of Marigot can place flags on the posts, they line the sides of the streets with posters and presently, there is an emergency which can affect their lives several of them sit at their homes without a care in the world. They don’t have to block or throw garbage on the streets to obstruct the traffic from Roseau to Melville Hall and vice versa. Why cant the people of Marigot line the streets of Marigot with posters displaying their grievances. It has been reported almost 50,000 visitors pass through Marigot a year. God helps those who help themselves.

I read the letter and can say that it will only serve to turn off the government. The MP is demanding that a “state of the art” hospital in 18 months. That is, the assessments, constructions plans, budgets, contracts, equipment, personnel – everything – for a “state of the art”hospital, must all be completed within 18 months. I’m not sure what exactly is expected here. In addition, the UWP has been asking for a relocation of the airport for years. Is the MP now saying that the airport location is accepted?

I’m all for a proper hospital in the north, however, I sincerely believe that an island with our population size (or even twice the size) can support only one state of the art hospital. Every other hospital should be a satellite hospital. That’s just my opinion.

You see what I mean? In 2012, the then Minister of Health announced plans to begin construction of the state of the art hospital for Marigot. Are you even aware of that? I am sure you are not. But carry on, speech is free…..so speak papa.

waw waw waw… I was hoping for something positive for once from this guy because the issue is in his backyard. But he ‘s still on the blame train. This guy has no political experience nor the know how to solicit assistance.
How can you ask someone/people/government for assistance to address an issue in a letter by starting with blaming the person for the issues and publicizing the letter.

I’m not in politics and I can tell you this is not how you solicit assistance in a matter, especially when the issue occurred during your watch. That is a clear indication of someone who skirts responsibility. You’re the MP for Marigot, you dont need to be Prime Minister to get people together on a project.

He could have raised money from his supporters to fix the hospital, instead he raised money for himself!

Can somebody please tell this guy the campaign is over! he lost!

  8. June 13, 2016

Why didnt Eddison James fix the hospital when hecwss in power ? How comes is Skeritt neck allyou want to break. No other PM never improved any other service in the country, Since i born and come along i know Dominica like that so, Eddison couldnt fix it, Patrick couldnt, Leblanc, Mammo yoh blood suvkers leave the man alone.
Lennox should raise the cash from his followers. It beggars belief as to where you guys hearts are not for your fellow country men, but for a ad man.
keep on god is in control.
Dominica has been on re ote control since the volcano erupted and with brain drains like you guys you aint going no where

Clearly, based on the tone of the letter, Lennox has no expectations of the PM responding to him. If he were interested in a response he would have penned the letter in a more respectable way. It sounds like raising dust for the sake of raising dust.

Hon Lennox Linton, MP Marigot Constituency & Leader of the Opposition,

Sir, what have you not copied your letter to the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA), as well as the World Aviation Regulating Authorities – including Civil Aviation Authorities, Airline Regulating Authorities and the Flight Safety & Accident Investigation Organisations?

This “one-man” band wagon will NOT give you the satisfaction of a response and nothing will be done about the plight of the Marigot and the environs people’s plight.

Opposition Leader, Lennox Linton, I must commend you on a well penned letter! My only question is, why did it take the building being condemned before penning such an effective letter to Prime Minister Skerrit? This is the first letter I have seen on this matter, although molding did not just happen overnight.

May I say to you and your team that:

I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Thomas Jefferson

Are you a news media as stated? Dominica NEWS on Line, or the propaganda machine for the UWP. I don’t understand why when Lenox goes to the toilet the world has to know. We want relevant issues, if you prize your establishment as news worth, Lenox Linton, is the least person with creditability. You are constantly parading a do nothing know nothing person in front of us and those of us who do not agree with your tactic a insulted by your goons. You are the ones who are keeping our nation back, LL statements are irrelevant to me! Give us the beautiful scenery that exist in DA. Yes, I agree that the situation needs immediate attention. Lenox this is your constituency and you don’t even reside there, therefore, you are letting your constituency down! The status of the hospital was first brought up by the DLP where your YOU? Prior to the press conference your were practically silent on the matter, now you want to raise concerns and kick hell! Why can’t people see thought your Character? The people overwhelming elected you to look out for their best interest, what have you done. Your goal now is you first by trying to become the Prime Minister. Instead of putting a sound system on your vehicle and making a public nuisance of yourself, use your time wisely and stop preying on the people emotion.

    June 13, 2016

The tone of the letter is quite militant and does not seem to suggest a congenial spirit, hence there is very little chance of much happening. It is evident that there are strong political overtones and unfortunately the decline into political divide is inevitable.

  16. Floridian Diaspora
    June 13, 2016

Skeritt does not care about the people. He knows that his pocket is filled with enough money for he and his people to fly overseas for medical attention when they are in need of it. The location of this hospital indicates that this constituency was not bought for handouts so they’re being punished for standing up for mortality. That’s the dr. Punjab’s way

  18. It is rather unfortunate but we all know that this very crucial matter will result in nothing more than a bunch of talk by Politicians and some crazy statements made by callers to programs on Q95. In Dominica, everything is sensationalized for a few hours or days then placed in the folder of past grievances and forgotten. You can start with the 2014 elections irregularities then move on to the MyDominicaTradeHouse scandal then tie that in with the famous “suce cel” insult, then carry that into the Public Works debacle and on to the Lindo Park situation. Then you can start again with the news laws that were rushed through by the majority in Parliament having to do with banking and the IPO, tie that in with the unlawful giving away of 15 acres of land in the Cabrits, a part of our national heritage and culture, take that and move to the shell companies in the U.K. owned by the mother of one of the P.M.’s children, then roll right into the panama papers and Marigot Hospital.

Linton this is not just putting your writing skills on display ..WE KNOW THAT IT IS FANTASTIC!!!You have raised this matter of the Marigot Hospital ad nauseam, more than 1000,000 times,IN AND OUT OF PARLIAMENT.The attendance at the meeting at Marigot exceeded expectation, the people are with you, WHY CAN’T YOU stop the talking and do what is necessary..Skerrit leads this country by trickery and deception…He has largely ignored Marigot, and other constituencies UWP WON…Your ultimatum sould have been today Monday.

How many years has the DLP been in power? Did the hospital had termites infestation or mold issues when Mr. James was in power? Fed up with you all stupid political comments. So what about the people who voted for the DLP in Marigot? Their health don’t matter?

  21. LOL…these so-called UWP Politicians and supporters are truly lame ducks. They have no voice in Parliament, always being effectively blocked from raising pertinent issues by the one-sided speaker of the house. Issue after issue they go on a campaign of “education” and “information” which clearly is not resonating with a tired and fed up support base. They have one media outlet to publicize their views and positions during the day, hosted by a radio personality whose main interest is selling advertisements and making commercial stops. As their supporters become fired up about an issue the politicians come in and seize the day with meetings and talk, talk and more talk effectively KILLING the momentum. They make demands after demands that are laughed at and ignored by this (one man) Government and they still insist on making demands. They fail to realize that this Government will begin to respect them and the power they possess only AFTER action is taken!!!
