Delroy Williams, one of the coordinators of a social media campaign to raise awareness of the plight of women in relations to harassment, sexual abuse, rape and other social ills, has high hopes for its continuation into 2017.

#LévéDomnik, Créole for ‘Wake Up Dominica,’ encourages women, girls, men and boys to wake up, stand up and raise their voices against sexual harassment, molestation, all forms of assault, rape, domestic violence, etc… by simply tell their stories anonymously, in their own words using that hashtag.

Williams told Dominica News Online of the different activities that will be taking place to bring greater recognition to the campaign.

“We will be doing focus group meetings and also putting on a symposium for abused women. There will be training for some of the abused victims to being advocates,” he stated.

A number of businesses have partnered with the campaign coordinators to ensure the proper establishment of the movement.

“We are working on doing more awareness activities. The next line of activities will take place in January where we are teaming up with a number of agencies across Dominica including the Bureau of Gender Affairs and the Life Line Ministries,” Williams explained.

Williams stated so far that the feedback has been overwhelming and also appreciated the fact that people have entrusted their stories to the campaign coordinators.

“We want to thank the general public for being supportive in the way that they have embraced the campaign,” he said.

The campaign is being coordinated by Khadijah Moore and Williams.

Below are excerpts of stories from the #LévéDomnik hashtag on Facebook.

“Anonymous: #LévéDomnik “So uhm where to start…. growing up I’d say I had a pretty normal childhood up until the age of 4…I was adopted. I can distinctively remember my adopted mother just leaving the country and never turning back. Now I was left with my adopted father who was a really rough man…and because I was so in love with my adopted mom, I was not a fan of his; I was rude to him. And that’s when I could say the “abuse” started(I label it this way because when I told my siblings of this they would just dismiss it and say idk what I’m talking about, I’m too young) Not sexual, but physical abuse. I remember he beat me so badly I could barely walk….”

“Anonymous: #LévéDomnik I thought this was really behind me, however reading all these stories of people me reminded me how much the little things have affected me.

In primary school, being very keen about arts and craft and the man teaching was my favorite teacher, was taking advantage of me slowly. He was the one who introduced me to the world of arts (drawing and painting) however has intentions if introducing me to more stuff than an 8 year old should know. It started off as little greeting hugs progressing to extra help in classes.

After getting a great grade from term he said his salary isn’t enough for what he’s doing for me and that I needed to pay him too, straight after that was a French kiss,my first kiss too and told me next time we will do painting. I was really excited but really confused because how could someone I looked up to so much think it was ok to kiss me …as time went by he would take me to classrooms that were empty and kiss and touch me. I decided it was getting too much for me and I noticed my grades dropping so told my grandmother whom I was living with….”

How many of these alleged cases are actually true? Are we prepared to stain the name of Dominica with probably several fictional cases of these abuses? Anonymity has its advantages but it also carries a dangerous side of mischief, frivolity and falsehood.

Let us hope for truth and righteousness sake that the anonymous victims can come forward and present themselves to the trusted coordinators and anyone who can help them get over or heal from their trauma.

Anything else can create a truly bad image of Dominica and its male population, which might not be generally so.

WHat if none of them are actually true? The point is we want to raise awareness of that does happen. Maybe the names and places were changed or completely made up. but those who have actually been through these situations know that the possibilities are very real. very very real. And Awareness is the goal. A chance for victims to raise their voices. Doesnt matter if the stories presented are not true. Child molestation, sexual abuse are true and real.

Ofcourse u will continue for 2017 cause it is a beff news rumour service of gossip gossip talk talk when u have a case in the courts and people filing judicial review. These postings giving Dominica a bad name like we are an island of paedophiles i think u all should stop it, if u want action go and protest at the courts when sex cases come up and lawyers file judicial review instead of lazily hiding behind computers posting rumours from anonymous emails who may have agendas of why don’t khadijie or whatever her name put anonymous post about corruption in her beloved Government.

Are you kidding me? Get real with yourself. Were you hurt in anyway as a child for you to say the stories are fake? Is a bad or good name more precious than the character and stability of our children and society? You disgust me

I would like to tell you exactly how you sound but I suspect DNO will not post it. You yourself may have close friends and family who were are are victims of sexual abuse and you don’t even know it. So unless you have walked in the shoes of one or more of these VICTIMS you have no right to criticize the movement. and YES Dominica if FULL of perverts and rapists and nastyass men who prey on the innocent, male and female alike. Wake up!! Leve!! Stop pretending that everything is peachy. And it’s because of people like you and your insensitive comments rapists will get away with murder because victims are ashamed and afraid to come forward. IT’S TIME TO PUT A STOP TO IT!! Protect our children. According to Tasha P, LET OUR CHILDREN BE CHILDREN!!

Sounds like you have something or someone to hide….events that hurt us as an island, as a gender is beff to you?!…smh…and you right there, are part of the problem why this scourge in our society is being swept under the carpet.

Thats the problem. IT is beff to a lot of the public servants too. The nurse who saw to the child, the Police who took the report, the social worker who is dealing with the case. No professionalism, integrity and ethics. Many of our so called professionals have no class. they are only educationally qualified for the job, some of them. Matters like this should be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Parents teach you boys how to not be predators and psychopaths. Teach you young girls to stand up for themselves and to even protect themselves. Parents listen to your children. they know more than you would believe.

stand around the bus stops at lunch time. open your eyes and see what is going on. young girls being pursued by grown men. the girls think its exciting. the men think so too. the parents of these girls half the time know no better.

So what have you done about what you have witnessed? have you taken photos and sent them to parents or school principals? have you approached the young girls or made the grown men see you shaking your head or frowning at their behavior? Have you done anything at all about these specific “exciting” cases?
