Peace Corps celebrate 50th anniversary

This is a call to all Dominicans who have been impacted by the people serving in the United States Peace Corps.

The U.S. Peace Corps is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Peace Corps Volunteers across the world are holding celebrations; in Dominica the current Volunteers will be commemorating this occasion in early April in locations around Dominica. Volunteers have been serving in Dominica for 44 years. Since 1967, Volunteers have served in communities across Dominica, teaching and learning, helping and being helped by the hundreds of people they have lived and worked with.

For the 50th Anniversary celebrations, the Peace Corps invites Dominicans to share their stories and experiences of past and present Volunteers. If you worked with, hosted, were taught by, or even just met a volunteer along the way, they want to hear from you. It can be an interaction from 40 years ago or last week. It can be a story from your child or a personal account. Share your experiences!

If you have stories or pictures to share, please contact PCV Alex Sheldon at [email protected]. If you have any questions please call her at 767-614-1568.

To those who think Peace Corps volunteers are spies, I pose a series of questions (feel free to answer any/all).

    1. Have you ever met a Peace Corps volunteer? Were there any characteristics that this person had in common with a person you think would be selected to carryout international espionage? I have met quite a few Peace Corps volunteers; none of them convince me they could steal a bunch of bananas, let alone state secrets.

    2. What exactly do you think the United State’s government is interested in learning? What the Chinese are doing? Procrastinating. What the Taiwanese are doing? Waiting for their next chance to piss off the Chinese? What the Japanese are doing? Leaving. What are the Dominicans doing? Lime’n

    3. Outside of the REAL, ‘spy mission’ you claim Peace Corps volunteers are here to do, can you articulate a description of the ‘fake mission’ they are here fulfilling?

    4. Spies, humanitarians, or a mixture of both aside, what is the name of the Dominican government organization that funds human service to the global community? How much in foreign aid did the Dominican government contribute to address global suffering?

    5. Lastly, if the United States is dastardly enough to design a spy scene in which it manipulates the world’s poorest countries into allowing spies inside their borders under the guise of humanitarian workers, why do some many Dominicans leave here to go live in the United States?

    Cheers

the present peace corp they recuit now are not like before before peace corp came to help a community but now those they have at present have their own agenda. The director of this association must look into this.

For all you doubting Thomases, the Peace Corps is not what you think it is. The CIA does not use the organization to spy on countries.I am from Dominica and have lived in the US for many years and is now getting ready to work as a volunteer in the Caribbean. My preference is Dominica where much help is needed in education (my field) as well as agriculture.

Tim Bellitti taught Maths at Grammar School from 1989 to about 1992. Such a pleasant and polite teacher. Was very patient. Would like to get in contact with him.

Interesting since just other day in Maryland where i live , Sargent Shriver (first peace corp director/ u.s Vice-presidential candidate and many other accolades ) passed away last week at age 95. He married into the Kennedy Clan.
However what is not being said is that the corps is a major instrument of CIA spy-craft, conjure up by the Kennedy administration to spy on countries around the world. Pres.Kennedy put his trusted brother in law to run it. Then again that shouldn’t diminish the good they have done for countries but it always good to be aware.

Yes I remember a lady called Miss Belmour. She came as a peace corp in the 70’s . Quite nice lady she would allow us children to play games at her house in the evenings.
