Petition begs Obama for assistance in wake of Erika

A petition has been launched on the internet asking US President Barack Obama for assistance after Tropical Storm Erika ravaged the island more than a week ago.

The petition appears to be the initiative of a Dominican who has served or is serving in the US military.

“We ask President Obama to please help our island Dominica,” the petition reads. “We Dominicans who served in the US military, with selfless service and meritorious honors call upon you Mr. President to help our families and Dominica in this time of need.”

The petitioner called on all Dominicans who have served or are serving in the US military or those who have family members serving in the military or anyone of Dominica descent to sign the petition.

Some Dominicans have questioned the lack of a visible US presence in Dominica after Erika.

Last week the US Embassy in Barbados said United States Agency for International Development (USAID) was in the process of providing humanitarian assistance totaling USD$50,000 for the immediate supply of storm-related disaster relief supplies. The embassy said USAID will work with the Dominica Red Cross to provide essential relief items to citizens in nine hard-hit areas identified by the government of Dominica.

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said assistance was sought from countries around the world, as far away as Iran, after the passage of Erika.

These people who are commenting have no idea what is going on. Why should America help Dominica? And yes, Dominicans have become so lazy. Yes Erika damaged the island, but what happened to all the assistance other countries have? Hmm. Open you all eyes. There’s more than enough money to rebuild the main structures. Skerrit has a house in New York while every Dominican suffering. His wife making U. S children, while the primary hospital needs a major turnover. GET REAL YOU GUYS!!!! The people of Dominica has placed a sneaky, corrupted individual to govern them. The people of the island is the Only one who can remove him.

Love love the USA. But perhaps we should read about the trade agreements they wanted us to sign. I have educated myself. Then turn away from Cuba. Many of us intrinsically believe the embargo was wrong and do does the US President. Perhaps we have also forgotten their role in our banana industry. Just because I love you does not mean I will stand for your nonsense. Let’s as a nation appreciate the difference. We thank every and all nations for their help and gladly accept $50K from the USA. Now let’s move on.

If the U.S has promised to help through the Dominica Red Cross, then what’s the problem.I see nothing wrong with that, it’s help. You’ll people need be careful.Just complaining, complaining, complaining, about what ! Go home, get down on you’ll knees, raise you’ll both hands up to the Heavens and say thank GOD,(1) to be alive,(2) that you’ll are getting some form of assistance. And stop the complaining. Try that and I promise you’ll will feel a whole lot better.
Someone mentioned the U.S Republicans in regards to Grenada. Anything to do with war, count on the republicans they will be there, that’s what they do best.Other than that, they could care a less.
Have you all forgotten Katrina, New Orleans , George.W Bush.

  4. I dare say all the negativity coming from people who are incapable of helping Dominica, so that is their way of feeling important while everyone else is doing something positive.

The way I see Dominicans all over coming together, warms my heart and Soul and gives me hope, that there are many good Dominicans around who still care. We sit behind a laptop, desktop or whatever device and lash out at those in Dominica working tirelessly and we spill filth from our mouths as if we are helping the situation on the ground in Dominica. News Flash, You are not. How ignorant and pathetic are some of us. Countries upon countries are coming to our aid and instead of saying thank you to them, we are there complaining? News Flash No ONE is compelled to help us, but we certainly appreciate all those who do., because we need them all.

Luckily they too will ignore some of our ungratefulness because they know there are many more Dominicans who are grateful for there help and support.

Thanks for your comment. So true. I personally think our God is tired of our complaining too. Consider the Israelites and their complaining. Trust in the Lord with all your hearts and minds Dominica. Put God first and this DNO will never be the same. Thanks to all those who have assisted us. Let’s fill each and every post with thanksgiving. Lives will change. Dominica will change. How much time do we spend praising God vs online looking for the next thing to comment on? We can be greater. The world is watching. Let’s show them true solidarity. Let’s build our country!

Lets be real. Preparedness, response, recovery. Most of us were not prepared, we are presently responding to Erika and recovery is to come. If we as dominicans are so uncooperative in response, how will we recover? It is a process. Why bash the US and condemn the government when recovery is still ahead. Countries who provide assistance in responding may or may not give the same in recovery, yet those who did not supply heavily during response may or may not do so during recovery. If these countries and agencies are to forgo procedueres and follow the comment in this medium they may pull back what they gave and do not consider giving more. Relax people.

Republican presidents in America have always been kinder to the Caribbean than Democratic Presidents. Look how Reagan ran to our rescue during the invasion of Grenada. And look how Bush Sr. provided so much support in our war on drugs! The Democrats on the other hand have shown selfishness. Clinton damaged our Banana industry by imposing globalization! Wake up people, democrats don’t give two hoots about us! Obama should be ashamed of himself. The Caribbean has generally supported him so in a time of crisis the least he could do is lend a hand!

A few days after David on 29 August 1979 a U.S. ship was in port with food and shelter along with several soldiers helping us.Now under a black president we are on our knees begging him 4 help.
Lest we forget,in 2008 presidential election all the leaders in Dominica was encouraging us who lives in the U.S. to vote for Obama.Mr.P Bellot was on the radio singing the praises of Obama.
2012 election Mr Thompson Fountain asked us to vote 4 Obama, he said He will be a great help 4 the Caribbean.
Bill Clinton was vying to be president in 1992,Rosie Douglas was on radio boasting how he is going to help Clinton win the presidency because the democratic party is 4 blacks.Yes he won, but do u know what we received from his victory.? Bill Clinton gave us C.B.I. Which means almost nothing to us,and this so-called first black president joint Chiquita and destroyed our banana industry.Remember we the A.C.P. countries had a little preferential treatment on the E.U market.

    I AM NO DEMOCRAT.

“Francisco Telemacque can you read? Where did it say that the government of Dominica is petitioning for help from the US.” (Responder).

Responder, get this in your head, I may not be able to read; however, I know how to spell my name! My surname is “Telemaque” okay; there is no “c” in the word Telemaque, any Telemaque you find spelling their name and include a c into it might be a lessor educated one. So, be informed that Telemaque is French, the appropriate way it should be written is like this “Te’le’maque,” the “que” is silent, therefore one do not need a c to get the pronunciation. In English the accent over the e/e is left out!

Now to business, whether Skerrit is involve in the petition or not, no Dominican should be at this time begging the United States for anything, considering the hate Dominicans display towards the United States, including Skerrit. It would even be worst if Skerrit was directely involved.

For whatever reason which I don’t know, the world’s greatest idiots must be Dominicans! Fellow Americans, Skerrit don’t like our country. Why should our president give Dominica our tax payers’ money? When he learns to be more shrewd and diplomatic we will respond as Americans ALWAYS do!

    • Thanks
      September 7, 2015

Oh no. We are not idiots. We are getting by. And that’s for sure. Remember we are not a lazy people depending on others. Its a disaster and we as a people will survive.

The US has a choice to or not to assist. That’s okay. There’s no reason to force them. We fail to understand that the ultimate power is from above. I do not know why we tend to believe that without the US nothing will work. Please take note; that’s not the case.

With our limited finances and in crisis such as this, we will continue to be a happy, god-fearing people, living in peace.

“Begs” is a pretty strong word. Urks me when the media uses descriptive words to try to evoke an emotional response but yet it gives off the wrong impression and doesn’t coincide with the facts. We as a nation are not begging anyone for anything. We asked for assistance. It is up to other nations to help if they so wish it. If the US soldiers went ahead and did their own petition on behalf of DOminica then just simply say it as it is. We’re not begging for anything and this petition isnt begging either. It is a request for assistance. Just like in the SUN NEWSPAPER the front page was “Evil Erica” while highlighted the storm. YOU IDIOTS! how can a storm be evil? How can acts of nature be evil? Evilness caused the storm? if so prove it while trying not to sound stupid. I mean we should think before we write dumbness.

All I will say is, Skerrit had a choice to give birth to his son in Venezuela, Cuba, China, Iran, Monocco, or any of the countries he has ties with. For some reason he chose the USA, which is less than a 4hr direct flight, which means the future of his son is protected and by means of policy, US will do whatever it takes to protect their citizens. Now I bet if the village of Viellecase was in the place of Pitete Savane ,and one of his family members was missing, his first call would not be to Venezuela, Trinidad but the USA. The non presence of the USA after Erica, should serve as a serious warning to all of us in Dominica that our future with Skerrit is very, very, very dangerous. His family knows where to turn to, that he has secured. Is that the case with you and your family? Keep being fooled

Why do we always want to depend on others for everything? Its that mentality that someone owes us help that is killing us. Sure we can appreciate the help of anyone who wants to give it willingly, but we ourselves, must learn to depend on ourselves and build what is ours. No one owes us anything. If they choose to help say thank you and if they don’t that’s ok to. Its time we believe in ourselves and work hard to make this country what we want it to be. Nothing is going to be fixed over night, its going to take time regardless of who help or who doesn’t. Quit bashing each other and throwing shade. The embargo on Cuba did not work. So even though our PM asked them to ease up on Cuba and is against an embargo on Venezuela what’s wrong with that? Had it been up to Obama alone, he would have already lifted the embargo. What hostility are you talking about?

We DOMINICANS refuse to read and learn so I’m suggesting if you don’t know what is going on read ,the USA just cannot come out and help Dominica like they want too because the ALBA AGREEMENT the our PM signed us into so get off the backs of America and it’s people, wake up and get information and read if you still don’t understand Angelo will broke it down for you just tune into Politic on Sunday/Tuesday evenings on Q95 they don’t hold back or water down information they say it out right with documents and facts to support, We Dominican down want to face up to the facts regardless.. READING is all it takes.
Dominica is part of ALBA so see who the other countries are and you will read for yourself Dominica is the only Island from the OECS that join, Dominica is been run by a group and we are in trouble, so you will know where to point too.

Times like this we miss Eugenia Charles, she could just call the state department and within days help on our shores. We have too much devastation & too much suffering, so many people without food, lights and water we need Obama help and we need it now, skerrit should call Obama before coming back too Dominica, America is our close ally, we were with them during Grenada crisis, what is the problem now?

“Times like this we miss Eugenia Charles, she could just call the state department and within days help on our shores.”

In any event you are a liar, no such thing, that is not how the United States operate, any thing an island in the East Caribbean gets from the United States of America relating to free gifts or anything of the sort, must come via the United States Embassy in Barbados!

You people just lie for the hell of it simply to be heard. If you lie is true, print you real name over or under your comment proving that you know that you know what you are talking about. Even in Eugenia day we needed an International Airport, Eugenia had the opportunity to ask the late President Regan to help us in that regards when she met him at the White House, all she accomplished then was get Regan to send the Marines to Grenada to kill crazy in an asylum.

It is amazing that the remnants of the Freedom Party support the UWP, while the spokesmen of the UWP seek to attack and vilify Eugenia Charles at every opportunity. Francisco Telemaque knows very well that Eugenia Charles DID get President Reagan to agree to build an InternationalAirport at Crompton Point. It was Edison James who as leader of the UWP wrote to the American Embassy in Barbados, warning the Americans not to come to Dominica as their presence would interfere with Dominica’s democracy, in advance of the1990 General Election. The newspapers of 1989 published Edison James letter and perhaps should publish it AGAIN! Some of us still demonstrate the truth of LeBlanc’s statement that “domnichen ni memoir poule.

Dominicans just need to keep the faith…and stay together…if Dominicans maintain this unity we can turn the country back into the right direction by December… We may not have proper roads, bridges, air access and so forth but hard work and determination will get the country back to what it was and even better. This is a challenge from God for us to be better and do better.

  33. ParoInRoseau
    September 7, 2015

The individual that made the petition should point out that he isn’t speaking for all Dominicans. Who said we need the U.S help… There are hundreds of countries and islands all over the world who are willing to help and who are even helping us here on island. Yet people are pressed about the U.S… Every country the U.S has entered and left is still the same as how they met it…in some cases even worst. Just look at the Middle East countries. Dominica is doing okay without the help of the America… It’s unfortunate that several persons lost their houses, vehicles among others but we will rebuild. Dominica was never poor and is not now we’ll get poor. We just have to build better roads and bridges keeping in mind our primary hindrances which are our mountains and our many rivers… Other than that Dominica is okay! Big up Barbados, Trinidad, Venezuela, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Cuba, St.Lucia and the others… The help that we’re getting is unbelievable…thank you guys!!!

“Dominica is doing okay without the help of the US.” LOL

And the long lines at Western Union after Erika, where was the money coming from? There are probably more Dominicans living in the US than those living in Dominica, yet Dominica is doing okay without the help of the US? I would be happy if the US government stop all money leaving from the US via wire services and we would see if we are doing okay without the help of the US.

While Barbados, Trinidad, Venezuela, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Cuba, St. Lucia are helpful in providing immediate relief supplies, can they assist Dominica with the almost $1-billion needed to repair the island’s infrastructure? There is no toilet paper in Venezuela and there are long lines for basic food items, so we can’t accept much after initial relief. The economy of the other islands cannot assist us in the slightest way.

      Are you for real?

Did you say that Dominica was never poor? So why is it that pre-Erika we were up to our necks in debt. I think that when you say that Dominica is not poor, you are referring to the minority who have amassed great wealth at the expense of the majority.

Dominica is only great at begging, so begging for support post-Erika is not an alien concept for our administration. it is just business as usual, as the chosen few will benefit at the expense of the rest of the country.
I suspect you are sufferings from the aftermath of Erika.

Attempts to bash anyone, any one country or organization in this time of crisis really do look poor. Go to CDEMA’s website and you will find there a list of regional and international partners who have pledged assistance. I will address Canada and the United States of America specifically: the Government of Canada is willing to assist on the basis of an OFFICIAL REQUEST from Dominica that outlines needs identified. The Government of the United States of America has also pledged support on the basis of needs identified by the Government of Dominica. In addition to this pledge of assistance, USAID is already on the ground working on assessments. Patience, gratitude and goodwill will set the right tone and go a long way; the various assessments being conducted will go even further in helping Dominica rebuild following this disaster.

I believe the US should have helped since they have been helping counties all over the world. I also believe there is a reason why they are slow to do so or is giving minimal. I think now the PM should pump out his chest and show his muscles in Venezuela, China, Morocco and all those he says loves Dominica and Dominica love back. Yes the Chinese gave 300,000.00 and in know the Venezuelan sent a ship or something. Those things are like a drop of blood in the ocean, you can’t even see it. I am not going to nail the American Government on this one, I believe there is something stopping or slowing them down. Do I think they will help? Yes I do but I think it will come with conditions.

The Brits are here – Motherland sent help. Why do some people insist that the US must be there? They are fully aware that we were battered by TS Erika; if they want to help they will. I don’t see why we should be asking them. There are injustices being done by some friends of the US; yet, they continue to support them. Just as we cannot tell them who they can have as their friends, I don’t see why we should shun our friends in anticipation of their help. We are one world and we should try to unite regardless of ideologies.

history will judge this Dominican government and their loyal supporters . . .and it will not be pretty. A million barrels and tons of water cannot bring Dominica back. We need money , and lots of it.we need the right persons and the experience to build our beautiful island’s infrastructure so we will not suffer the same fate.
the distain that is perpetuated against the US from Dominicans ,whose bread is well butter is very disappointing. Starting with skerrit!!
now we are left to suffer . .the fact is we need help . . .real help . .big financial help . . .a few months will pass and if better is not done ,the barrels and water cannot improve our situation but bring more poverty and problems.
I commend this gentleman for this petition, we will continue to plead our plight to the big money donors!!
