PHOTOS: Heavy rainfall causes flooding across Dominica

Cars being washed away in Massacre

Heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Ophelia has been causing widespread flooding across the island.

The Dominica Meteorological Office reports that Ophelia is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of two to four inches mainly over the northern Leeward and Windward Islands.

Rainfall and thunderstorm activity is expected to continue to affect Dominica today.

Presently the Canefield Airport is flooded.

Police and fire officials are on the ground in Canefield and Massacre assisting those in need and warning pedestrian not to cross the bridges in  the communities but some have not heeded the warning.

Dominica News Online was able to gather photos from different location across Dominica. We are also getting more photographs from our reporters and from our readers, so please come back for more.

I hope that the link between this flooding and ecosystem degradation and climate change is being made. I am afraid that we can expect more disasters like this and people (especially rural communities) need to be involved in putting things in place to help prevent / reduce / adapt. Keep strong my brothers and sisters in Dominica!

    Hi All,
Very sorry to see what happened in Dominica. Such flooding informs us that we ought to take serious measures in terms of urban planning so as to restrict constructions in areas that are vulnerable to flooding : minimum of 10 meters from ravines etc.
This may have already been done but if not plans should be made to identify zones which are susceptible to flooding example low lying areas close to rivers or streams.
New constructions should be then unauthorized in these areas.
Another important measure that could be taken, after having identified streams or rivers in the vicinity of built-up areas is to ensure that debris is removed from the streams (dragging) on approaching the rainy season.
We will need to make some studies of our surface & underground drainage systems in vulnerable or high-risk areas. The risk of flooding increases as we have more and more building going up on the island.
Even though we can’t do all those things due to limited resources, but we could phase these efforts to be undertaken in short or long term.
As I conclude I wondered as I looked at various documents on this event, what may be the result, it a strong earthquake would strike the island as our building designs don’t seem in most of the times, to be based on simple earthquake resistant construction, which depends most on the designs by the Architects. This I hope to discuss in another article.
Best regards and strength to the victims of this recent flooding in Dominica.

Is there still quarrying activity on the island? If so,this could be a contributing factor and needs to be addressed urgently.

The authorities will need to focus on the concept of sustainable development before it’s too late. Very soon, we would no longer be able to boast of our beautiful island’s pristine beauty.

This is just another slap of adversity from this life. Some of us have cancer and heart disease and then occasionally some of us have to deal with a disaster of great magnitude. This earth regardless of where we live is only a temporary home and then a life free of problems after we leave here. Please keep the faith and trust God. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18. It is all making us stronger and working towards our eternal salvation. I love this beautiful island and I’m praying.

I am very sorry to see this natural disaster folks and i understand how frightening it must have been at the time. Please stay strong and try your hardest to be nicer to each other. You are all a churcg going people but unfortunately a lot of us forget that every one of us is made in the image of God, and therefore whenever we hurt anyone either by our words or actions we are doing that to God. How much can he take? Please remeber that and make every effort to stop the vicious attacks with the great poison of the tongue. The only way i believe our beautiful can be saved and be more prosperous, is by the life we live with one another. We pray for peace but the peace has already been given to us. We only need to exercise it by loving one another and helping one another without looking for any payment in return. If we are kind and caring and understanding and helpful without gossiping, then God will have mercy and the land and the people and we

will be prosperous and content. Words to ponder my fellow dominicans.

It is rather strange that the most mountainous country in the carribean is now appearing the most flood prone. The other flatter countries got less flooding. This is really something to ponder about. The rainfall was also intermittent. What would have happened if it was sustained?

Blessings and protection to all. I do agree that we should not blame God for when things happen to us that are unpleasant. However Rasta, people are not God and really aside from telling them to reach for God and to remember that God said (“he will never put more on us then we can handle”, thus meaning we are all much stronger then we know). Don’t you think that we should not preach but teach through our actions and deeds? Respect

It is obvious that the places that got floded has an issue with the water drainage system. That has nothing to do with god. It’s simple physics man….Too much water, little drainage equals flooding. It’s that simple. Not everything has to do with God.

This article provides some interesting incite into HAARP. After reading this, it makes me wonder with all of this diplomatic relations with countries such as Lybia, Venezuela and Cuba – all with issues with the U.S, what next can we expect.

I know we are being warned, and that we need to take heed. The question now is, who is warning us? Is it God? or is it America?

      • September 29, 2011

Conspiracy theories are exciting, but if the Americans really had a machine that could make it rain, wouldn’t they have used it in Texas this summer when all the crops there were shriveling from drought?

      • forreal
        September 29, 2011

@steve foerster,do your research again, right here in carribean has one those radars built for that purpose, its in puerto rico, and on texas, planes do go up in the clouds and drop chemicals to split the clouds.

      • September 30, 2011

If it works so well, why did Texas still lose so much of its harvest to drought? After all, if we’re to believe that the Americans have purposefully flooded Dominica using the same technology, shouldn’t it actually work?

The day has come and gone. Yes it must have been rough for the people of Dominica, but lives prevailed. And to God be the glory.

God Almighty has proved His Word true again, that He will save all lives, if He can only find one good person among those lives. That was His promise to Abraham because of his nephew Lot. But the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were too wicked, God removed Lot from among them, and He destroyed both cities.

Anyway, I am sure that God found many good persons in our Dominica, and the rest of us should be extremely grateful because of those humble, obedient, peaceful, and God fearing people that we still have left in our Dominica.

And so I can only plead with those people with no hope, who continue to mouth down our beautiful country with negative thoughts and spoken words, by which they continue to call for our demise.

People of Dominica, words are very powerful and they come from your own mouth. Think before you speak that word of your thought!

Just as most of you have been giving thanks to God for saving the lives of your families and friends, remember to continue in the same mode day after day, regardless of the circumstance of the day.

By your faith and tust in God, call out to Him for the deliverance of our country and her people from the harshness of political turmoils among the vile, strife, and afflictions of this end of times.

We need to get this in our heads that we are at the end of the beginning.

The existence of humanity must be done away with, that man might begin in his existence of spirituallity, in the sole presence of a Living God, who is of Spirit and Truth–not of flesh and blood, which is the nature of human beings–that is why the end of humanity must come; not the end of the world and its physical features.

We cannot escape the great tribulation, unless we take the side of God Almighty. These natural disasters–even now in Dominica–are signs, that we must take heed of.

Now is the time to make the complete “U” turn and to walk the other direction–which leads unto the path of Life, the Life through which we will function with the ways of God.

Are we trying to make that U turn, towards the path of Life?

The loss of property and unfortunately lives due to natural disasters is an event that occurs and cost billions of dollars globally. Unfortunately with climate change these events are expected to become much more frequent according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Clmate Change (IPCC). What’s even more disturbing is that developing and third world countries are likely to be impacted much worse becuase of our location and fragile economies. While we have very little ability to prevent these events, we do have a say in our response to the events. Our disaster management officials therefore need to develop effective disaster response strategies for every potential natural disaster (hurricanes, earthquake, volcanoes, tsunami’s and flooding).

By looking at the photos my best guess is the met office estimation of 2-4 inches is a very conservative number. First of all they only get readings from the airports and cannot account for the rainfall in the mountains.

This is a perfect example of flashflooding. The ground was already saturated from rainfall since we are in the rainy season. The tropical system with all the moisture was forced to rise over our tall mountains giving the west coast a beating. I do not see any pics from the east coast so i take that to mean they were not badly affected. Saturated soil, low pressure sytem, high relief equal to flash flooding.

To all the geo people out there these are the kind of things we are taught. Lets all learn so that the next time we have such conditions we can take the needed precaution. its all part of living in a tropical paradise.

sorry to hear that this is happening to our country. my suggestion is that the ones responsible look into getting proper technology in place to make accurate predictions. so people can be warned to move their pocessions to higher ground. all the rivers should have flood guages, and data should be collected for future planning. be safe.

Well guys, my daughter and I just arrived in DA yesterday from London. I popped into the NBD in Canefield to get some cash, the entire road was flooded, cable down, bank system shut down and next door a huge tree fell on a man’s vehicle. In a matter of an hour when I returned to my home which is past autotrade, the river bank was broken and the waters so high that I could not drive on the road. That was scary…The pics of the water was incredible. I could not drive to my home!! My daughter was fascinated and could not stop filming and taking phots as the river runs right next to us….Thank God no one got hurt!!

  97. September 28, 2011

Well, well, well! Folks let us be real for once. Why is it that in time of trouble, DBS radio is instantly sanctified and can find all the songs that will bring glory to God?? When things are back to normal, it’s back to ‘BACCHANAL’. People do we think that God is so blind to our pretences? Our hypocrises? Have we God in a box and think we can open the box when we feel like it and close it when we do need to hear his rebuke? Have we forgotten that the same God who we say is loving, kind and merciful is also a God of wrath? That He said in his word He will laugh at our calamities when trouble comes?
We are no longer ignorant of who God is, neither are we ignorant of what the bible says.. Let’s reverence God because he is worthy of it. Let’s STOP playing games. I am here in the V.I and I pray that all will go well with my country. HE THAT HAVE EYES TO READ, LET HIM READ!!!

Oh please, do not be silly. Utilize your common sense if you have any. It is not possible to know if there will be flooding and in those areas. There are times the hurricane shifts and with its wind. Therefore do not blame the PM. Are you questioning the weather and the hurricane itself? In effect Mother Nature? Think before you comment and blame others of what nature spewed on DA and its residents. Pray for DA and its residents including yourself. This is what God wants you to do; not criticizing and blaming others for the force of nature which is beyond their control.

Well Dominicans, all you bad, realy BAD, the worst, for twelve years i’v been going through this water situation, and here you all are, all you get a little water and its like the end of the world, talking all kine of BS.
Men, i’ved been going through this nonsence for about 12 years, and our so call Minister, Mr Rabone Blackmore saw it nessersery that i got no assistance, how many of you all had so much to say, now look, listen, you all are perthetic, and disspicable.
The spirits are most definatelty working.
What so ever is good for the Goose, is indeed good for the Gander, now go with that…

  142. BLESSED
    September 28, 2011

I haven’t heard of any deaths, So this is very good. GOD be with you all, its bad for those who didn’t have flood insurance, something we didn’t expect, But hold on strong. You have life.

    September 28, 2011

Thanks for keeping us abreast DNO.

My heart goes out to all those who have been severly affected. We are still in the Hurricane Season, and should continue to be on the alert.

Mother Nature can’t be contested with, and a river never forgets its path. That’s why planning/ zoning should do their Job, and people should not build wherever they wish.

Keep the faith and hold strong. God never gives more than we can bare.

i see so many comments asking for ppl to pray more and those same ppl are attacking any comment that seem to suggest that yes, some of the damage could have been made less with better planning and more frequent and pertinent maintenance of the infrastructure like culverts, drains, storm drains etc. Lets face it, this is a government issue and the prime minister as the head of that government will be blamed. take for example the areas where members of the public have been complaining about the state of and sometimes lack of certain infrastructure will make the impact of such occurances be much higher,i.e lack of retaining walls, rivers and streams clogged with debris or completely choked up. so before we go on this offensive on any comment that seems to suggest that GOVERNMENT and it many arms do have a role to play in disaster mitigation, one has to think.
the prayers you all calling for wont do much unless we are willing to put in the work and find a way to move forward. these occuarances are natural and they happen all the time all over the world, and dont be fooled into thinking that the Government has no role to play or blame to take.

But this why it happened in the first place. because we are bless with hills, we have a lot of rain and because we have rain we have the lovely rivers and because we have rivers we will get flood wen it rains heavy. they all go hand in hand. You cannot have one without the other.

We can’t stop the rain. The rivers will reclaim their space. Planning needs to stop the building in ravines (Fortune), on river banks and the sea shore, to avoid the loss of property at these times.

What is even more heart breaking is that insurance is not even going to cover a lot of the personal losses – the vehicle owners for example expect to hear from the insurance companies that this is act of god or “force majeure”. Good luck and best wishes to all those who have experienced losses through damaged properties, the farmers, bus drivers . Better days will come.

Certainly it is going to need some focus attention on drainage infrastructure considering climate change and more intense heavy rainfall. There may be a need to audit all the drains and the culverts in regard to there water carrying capacity, and the adequacy since some of them were built quite a few years ago. Our thoughts are with those who are affected
