PHOTOS: National Day Parade

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAs Dominica on Sunday celebrated its 35th birthday since becoming independent, one of the highlights of the celebration, the National Day Parade, was held at Windsor Park Stadium.

The parade involved members of the police force, the fire service, cadet corps and a group of cadets from St. Thomas.

Prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit gave his independence address to the nation while president Charles Savarin bestowed awards on outstanding Dominicans.

Photos below depict the initial parade line up, the arrival of some dignitaries, the president inspecting the guard of honor and the president being saluted.

Just wanna wish Dominicans happy Independence.
I (being a St. Lucian,) truly believe that the Commonwealth of Dominica is one of the islands in the Caribbean that is positioning itself to succeed and supersede other islands.

I have been intrigued by the uniqueness of the island and its people and can truly see a sense of pride that’s being exhibited in almost all national and state festivals or ceremonies….something which appears to be lacking in (SLU-758)/ St. Lucia.

    Bravo, Bravo, Bravo.

By the way…Lovely ladies too :-D

Dominicans must educate themselves of the reasons why we celebrate our Independence and the role of a Patriot. One of the most important instrument of an independent country is THE CONSTITUTION and it behooves every citizen and every patriot to observe and respect the provisions of the Constitution because it is SUPREME and not Skeritt. The President duty is to uphold and preserve the the contents and spirit of the constitution and to guard against it’s violation and that is what Skerrit and Charles Savarin have done. So if Dominicans agree with Skerrit when he said to Hell with the Constitution let us beg and drink rum and celebrate our Independence when they get sober it will be too late because there will be no law no constitution to stop his raft and vengeance on them.

Lennox and his UWP crew must be feeling very foolish now that all the independance activities were very well attended by very patriotic Dominicans. They should now ask themselves what chances they have in convincing Dominicans to seriously think of electing them to govern this country, if their call for the boycotting of these activities were so overwhelmingly rejected.

During the National Parade at the Windsor Park Stadium, if would be interesting to know what was Charles Savarin saying to Christian Karam when he laid the medal on his shirt on behalf of his father and family. According to Peter Karam, Savarin was responsible for the koolwash brigade that stoned the Karam’s residence for six hours. I also wandered what was going through the mind of Hubert Joseph while Savarin was placing a medal on his sponsor Mr. Davidson John. During the 1979 strike, his business was destroyed because his wife, Flossie Joseph, was a strong supporter of Mr. Patrick John.

    • Channel 1
      November 3, 2013

@spicegirl – They boycotted the boycott? Where?

It is said Dominica has about 70,000 people living in it. Did at least half of the 70,000 people ie 35,000 people show up at the stadium today? Was Roseau bursting at it seams with people?

You can rest assured that there were more people outside Roseau at their homes or wherever than there were people inside the stadium.

As far as I can tell, the greater percentage of Dominicans stayed away from the stadium. Simple Mathematics. Challenge that fact nuh….

A West Indies match in the stadium draws more people than the amount that was in the stadium today. Go figure…

      • WeNiceMan
        November 3, 2013

You from Dominica? The national has never been a HUGE crowd thing. Mainly because its 8 o clock in the morning. Most of us just got home from partying anyway. I am 34 years and Ive probably attended three times. Other couple times I caught it on TV.

      • Justice and Truth
        November 3, 2013

Those who were not able to attend must have viewed it on TV. You cannot expect everyone to attend for various reasons. One of it is, for those who reside far away and, as it was stated, the early timing.
For your information, worldwide, only a certain amount of people attend such celebrations in their country. Consider if 70,000 or even 35,000 people attended. There would not be enough space.
Consider if a city has a few million people. The same would occur. Many people view it on TV. This in no way diminishes the importance of such a day, function and those who are in attendance. This is why at least highlights are broadcasted in the evening. Utilize your common sense if you have any.
