Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has appealed to the business community in Dominica to assist Haiti and the Bahamas following the ravages of Hurricane Matthew.

In an address to the nation on Friday, he said he is moved as Prime Minister to help the stricken nations.

“I do not wish to delay Dominica’s response to this tragedy,” he said. “I feel that as a grateful people, we have a duty to respond without request.”

He stated that his thinking at this time is rather than appealing to individuals and households, many who are not in a position to give because of the Tropical Storm Erika, he believes the business community must be mobilized.

“I would like for management of businesses, employing ten or more persons to spearhead a hurricane massive relief and recovery exercise within their individual establishments,” Skerrit stated. “Contributions can be made in cash or relief supplies and efforts should be coordinated with the Office of Disaster Management and Red Cross of Dominica.”

He suggested that management teams meet the soonest to discuss the nature of the assistance they can and will give and communicate the information to the Office of Disaster Management or other known relief agencies.

“I would like for us as a nation to give ourselves one week from today to dispatch supplies to these hurricane ravaged countries,” he said, adding it is primarily a private sector response that is being sought.

Skerrit stated that the government will assist with the coordination and the underwriting of the shipment of supplies to their intended destination.

He noted that he has already dispatched letters to the leaders of Haiti and the Bahamas assuring them of Dominica’s thoughts and prayers and pledging whatever assistance in their hour of need.

“I appeal to Dominica’s business now to step up to the plate and act on behalf of your employees and other fellow Dominicans. Let us respond today as we were responded to 14 months ago…” he remarked, referring to the assistance received by Dominica following the passage of Erika in late August last year.

Latest reports indicate over 800 people were killed in Haiti during the passage of Matthew with fears that the number will rise as time goes by.

There are some unkind Dominicans. I did not think so and not after TS Erika. Note the comments of these people. Earthquakes of all strike at anytime and with no warning. Keep that in mind.

Consider Haiti’s population. In previous years, US, Canada and Europe did not hear of Dominica. It was not until Dominicans migrated to those countries they heard of it. Yet, there are still people in those countries who do not know about Dominica. They will ask some of us if we are from Jamaica or what island are we from. They do not know where Dominica is situated. When I am asked, I inform them where D/ca is situated and between which islands.
On the other hand, some Haitians do know about Dominica. Some migrated to Dominica after the earthquake. Therefore, some do know about Dominica.
When people are in need, we do so all for the love of God and of neighbors, wherever the neighbors reside in the world. Everyone is our neighbor. We do not ask questions or argue about it. .
Anyway, what is the fuss about not knowing Dominica. They are in need of help. Simply help them if you can.

The Prime Minister is asking the private sector of Dominica to step up to donate. why? Because he has come to the realization the average citizen can’t afford to do so. The PM is finally getting in touch with reality as he his publicly admitting that the citizens do not have disposable income and the economy is not doing as well as he and his government claim it to be doing. But here is the irony if the citizens can’t afford to donate because of lack of disposable income what makes the PM think that the private sector which depends on the same citizen to buy goods and services in order that their businesses can be viable is in a position to donate? We have been trying to tell the PM that the economy is sluggish if not dead and trust me it is not because of Erika 14 months ago but because of the failed economic policies of his cabal. The buoyancy in the economy is among the passport sellers and friends of Sherrit so here is the deal donate on our behalf we will be grateful.

I’m reading a little country like Holland sent 750,000 Euros already, without even questioning. That same little country came to help us last year when Erika knock us down.

It is shocking that some of you D/cans could make such ungodly statements. Are you Christians?
Those who assist in every country, many of them are also not rich. You will be surprised that they have financial burdens and obligations to meet but could still squeeze a few dollars to assist.
Remember what Our Lord Jesus Christ said about the widow who did not have but still gave.
Our Lord taught us how we are to act in words and deeds. If you cannot help you could still say with a loving heart, “Lord, I wish I could help but you know my means. When I can I will do so.”
God knows your means. He knows how much income you get, what you do with your money, how you spend it and on what. This judging is for Him.
People can help in many ways. It does not have to be monetary if they cannot afford it. It should go without saying, those who are not able to give, simply wish Bahamas and Haiti people well. You could pray for them that overall they will be helped.

    October 9, 2016

Personally I find Skerrit statement offensive; it’s almost like he’s commanding the private sector to donate to Haiti & Bahamas. Most of the people in the country catching hell and fighting to make ends meet and you asking that of them. T.S. Erika hit us giving people an opportunity to make some money by rebuilding the country, but instead you in coplo with foreigners to build bridges, walls and sidewalks rather than allow the people of Dominica to grow.

I’ll tell you what; when you begin to act with the responsibility of a Prime Minister, empowering the people of Dominica, like the farmers, contractors and laborers, when you start paying them on time for an honest days work, when you stop victimizing the people (public works workers and others), we will take on that responsibility with out your request. Till then, it’s dog eat dog.

The PM asked the business community to assist. Ask yourself. Was he referring to you? Did the cap fit you?
You know, in times of disasters all countries and nationals who can afford assist. Governments usually ask their nationals to assist; not only the business sector. There is no doubt the PM feels that some others will not be able to do so.
Whoever can afford to do so will help. Some people volunteer to help. They do not have to be told.
Haiti will receive much help from many countries and also non-profit organizations worldwide as when the earthquake struck.
After TS Erica almost devastated all of D/ca, many countries and nationals, the latter outside Dominica, assisted. in whatever manner possible. Have you forgotten that? I would not think that some of you would comment sarcastically. If you think your comments are funny, they are not. Shame on you!

Ironically they won on a technicality, in an appeals court, whereas Lennox had already prevailed in a Caribbean court!

Whereas we know that the seventy thousand was given to Lennox, we know he did not thief it: My question to you is this; where did a certain dictator get $69,000.00, or approximately $70.000.00 dollars from to buy a fake degree from an non-accredited Indian University, simply because he want to be called doctor?

If you wish to know how I arrive from sixty-nine to seventy, that is called squaring, since nine is greater than five, it is squared off, and become seventy! So now you can wash your smelling mouth on one we know to be a notorious thief, and it is…

This is for everyone and the critics of what the PM stated. The thought and the act from the heart counts. This is what Our Lord looks at. Those who are genuine practicing Christians of all, if they are sensible and matured should know how to act and to re-act to what the PM stated.
Furthermore, consider the amount of people in Dominica and those who were helped after hurricane David, Gilbert and recently TS Erica. How forgetful and ungrateful could some people be.
They must think beyond. Collectively, the amount given adds up. If all adult D/cans give even $1.00 or $5.00 to the Red Cross or whichever organization is involved in collecting money and forwarding it to those countries and if they divide the amount to Bahamas and Haiti, consider how much help these countries would receive. I am informing you, God will be extremely pleased.

For Dominicans who many countries assisted after Erika a short while ago to be speaking like that when another faces tragedy makes me sad. We have many Haitians on Island who helped when we were faced with our own crisis and now their families could very well be in need. When; and I hope never, we would be faced with another disaster we would need others to help us. As Dominicans we cannot let our words dictate that some of us could be that heartless.

Good call PM. If it is only water we have, let us send them some. I hope some of us can give as others gave to us in our hours of need.

Consider how God is saddened at what they stated. Our Lord Jesus Christ may be crying over their godless words.
These say they are Christians. It goes to show that they are not living the Gospel Truth. You know Jesus never forgets, be it good deeds or bad deeds. God will take care of them in time.
They do not know they bring down the wrath of God on them, their household and endeavors. They will not escape.
These will say, if God is so good why does He allow such things to happen. They cause it. Note their words. They are not helping their country nor the world in general. They need to be taught the Word of God. It is obvious they have not yet grasped it through their own fault. If people are Christians, they should never make such ungodly comments. They should know better.

Jno Jules if skerrit fart and it smells like the sulphur in penville you will put your nose right there and proclaim what splendid aroma. First of all if skerrit sends any money to Haiti I would hope it’s tax payers money. That would mean the people of Dominica are helping. Private sector is paying taxes, workers and there to make a profit for its investors. The choice for private sector to help is an individual one based on their bottom line and what loss they can absorb. Skerrit makes it sound like a great initiative but like everything he does and says it is without thought or practicalities. He could have said any private sector who contribute to Haiti relief will be exempt from taxes for two years. That would involve accountability and reporting. A private business is not a socialist service. Get y’all stupid brains out of the toilet.

If you all had build the economy that people can earn and have jobs then we will. But your corrupt Labour Government has broken Dominica to severe poverty and our people still suffering after Skerrit and Erika. Two dangerous hurricanes

Dominica received money from the Bahamas I mean hundreds of thousand US dollars , and we were grateful for it , so now it’s time to show our support . We always like to receive and never give. On the other hand I think each country has a disaster relief fund that is budgeted so ,the government should have that also to give away.
Do the right thing , give Bahamas one hundred thousand US. Dollars , to assist ,this is just a drop in the bucket .
    Give and you shall receive.
We were happy to get those cheques from overseas now it’s time to give .

Do not point a finger. Look to yourself. The PM does not need your advice. He knows what to do, when to do it and how much he will give, on behalf of D/can nationals. However, everyone cannot depend on the government. Everyone has an obligation to assist in whatever manner they could. What will you do to assist those countries?
A friend in need is a friend indeed. The good that people do follow them. Likewise evil.
For God’s sake! If you feel, in all sincerity, you are not able to assist, keep quiet! Your ungodly words are unnecessary. They do not please God. Did you consider that your words and that of those critics are heaping burning coals on your heads?

Doninicans need to stop that nonsense..As a prime minister it is his duty to address the situation, it was merely an request to the private sector to give to Haiti and the Bahamas in this times of destruction something we as Dominicans can all relate to because of the devasting impact TS Ericka had on our lil country. we kniw what it is like to suffer. Why is it that everything the man says has to turn into a political riot..like seriously, people from all over are reading these comments. stop looking at the negative and focus on the positive that is the only way to elevate ourselves and land..We were helped last year by many and we all appreciated the help so why can’t we try to give back to. It doesn’t need tins of vienna sausages and old clothing. Skerrit must stop that hypocrisy of his and start to treat us as fools. First, the reason he cannot appeal to individuals and households has nothing to do with Erika 15 months ago, but rather because he knows he has reduced the majority to NEP and Red clinic and they are dependent on him. 2nd, If Erika is still being blamed for the poverty he has brought to Dominica, then why does he have WCMF this year? 3rd, Skerrit, in February you went to India in secret and donated $60K to a charity group, without appealing to the business community or seeking the blessing of parliament; they did not have a storm like the people of Haiti. In like manner you should have already sent Haiti some assistance. 4th, the business community that making money in Dominica today are …………….. who owns gas, insurance, passport money heavy equipment…………that about to build 5 star hotel selling passports,………villas, and other secret deals to name a few. What is important is to give from the heart. God will bless you for that. As to what the money was used for, God knows. Those who mismanaged it will be answerable to God. Do not let it prevent you from giving. Simply consider, you did your part. You did what you felt in your heart to do. This is good enough.
St. Teresa Avila said (do not know if you know about her): “God is content that each one should do his best. . . . Blessed be so just a God.”
Disasters will strike. We know not when, which country will be affected and how it will affect them and nationals. Our duty is simply to help, when the circumstances call for it. We leave the rest to God.
We may have relatives in Haiti whom we do not know. Remember in bygone years some D/cans migrated to that part of the world. Some, we never heard from. They obviously would have children, grandchildren, etc. in Haiti. When we help, we know we are helping people. It should give us a sense of satisfaction.

It is not for us to question. Consider, Haiti is a big country. Government buildings had to be rebuilt. The government must have (also) given some to the public sector, the community to re-build their homes and businesses. Salaries had to be paid. I do not think money goes that far in Haiti, just as in Dominica, even in a big country. This was a huge burden on that government. Now hurricane Matthew.
Poor Haiti and its nationals. The Haitian government has a further burden. We have reasons to empathize with them and help them in whatever manner possible, if we can.

The quickest way the PM could show he can help is by sending a contingent of SSU officers and cadet to Haiti tomorrow. Private sector need to have deep pockets to spend money on relief. That is not their responsibility and they cannot be compelled by government to do so. Skerrit could buy canned goods and water from Dominica and have liat and coast guard make a trip tonight. If he so compelled he would have figured that out by now.

They are fortunate that Matthew did not devastate Dominica. These are not grateful to God and that Matthew spared them such a disaster. God had pity on them but they are showing no pity on Haiti and the Bahamas. Their day is coming when they will pay for their words.

2 Corinthians 9:8 – Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.
2 Corinthians 9:9-10 – As it is written: “He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor, his righteousness endures forever.” The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.
