PM becomes OECS chairman

The prime minister will be OECS chairman for 12 months
The prime minister will be OECS chairman for 12 months

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, is now the new chairman of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and he said the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) and the OECS economic union will be major areas of focus during his 12-month stint.

“Clearly there will be a number of matters we need to advance within the OECS family,” he told state-owned DBS Radio. “As we all recall we effected the passage of the OECS Revised Treaty, the Revised Treaty of Basterre giving effect to the OECS Ecomonic Union. There are still a number of issues we need to advance with respect to the proper functioning of the economic union. We have passed the legistlaton, I believe it is a matter of us to ensure that on the ground it is effected in a manner in which we set out to do.”

Skerrit said he would like to see more being done in moving countries towards joining the CCJ.

“I would also like to see the process of other countries moving towards joining the CCJ as their final court,” he said. “As you know Dominica has started the process and we are hoping to complete the process in the next few weeks.”

He stated that St. Lucia is making movements towards the CCJ based on parliamentary statements on the matter and Grenada will be having a referendum on it very soon.

“So I am hoping during my tenure as the chairman of OECS, we will see all of the us in the OECS acceding to the CCJ because we believe it is an important piece of our Caribbean architecture that is missing and we need to formalize this as an entire Caribbean region,” he noted.

The prime minister had high praises for the OECS which he said has made tremendous strides in working towards the benefit of citizens.

“Obviously the more you achieve the more demands are placed upon you,” Skerrit said. “But I thinks sometimes we as citizens we place our attention on that which have not been done rather than that which had been done and which is being done.”

He said as a region of just 600,000 people, the OECS is looked upon as a case of reference where integration, cooperation and best practices are concerned.

“It is something we ourselves in the OECS have failed to appreciate the extraordinary work that we have done to the benefit of all our citizens,” Skerrit said.

Now you are chairman of the OECS, I hope you don’t advise the Governments in the OECS to give their churches $500,000, and later cry broke. Don’t advise them to give their public servants, xero, xero, xero percent when they request a salary increase. Don’t advise them to have the largest cabinet in the EOCS. Don’t advise them to deprive their public servants of a salary increase, yet can give LIAT millions of dollars. Don’t advise them to show little interest in their hospitals, especially the one closest to their major airport. Advise them vehemently to have clean and fair general elections.

The PM should tell OECS about poverty in Dominica…….. Not impressssssssssss with this PM, never have, never will…. Oh maybe, with that new post, the PM will build hotel vielle case and all over Dominica, cause maybe its a gwo lagen ting dat lolololol…. wonder if them PM in oecs will take him on…… maybe they all didnot want it and as usual Pm skerrit will take it as did the pm post after Rossie’s Death…. lol

DOMINICANS READ FOR ALL YOU SELF: SKERRIT SOUNDS MAD ON CMC NEWS!!!

ROSEAU, Dominica, Jun 20, CMC –

The Dominica government is appealing to public servants to reconsider their decision to reject a wage freeze over the next three years, saying the island could ill-afford an increase in expenditure at this time.

The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) is seeking to its demand for a 10 per cent wage increase over the period, but Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit urged nationals to examine the global economic environment and see what’s occurring within other Caribbean countries.

“In St. Lucia today which is the largest economy now in the OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) they have had to propose to public officers a five per cent reduction in salaries. If they do not do this, the prime minister has said he may be left with no option but to send people home, this is a reality.

“In Grenada you realize there have been salary reductions. The Grenada government is now implementing an austerity programme, not because they just want to but they have to.

“Antigua and Barbuda as you know they have had their own challenges there, they have had to go to the IMF (International Monetary Fund) to address their challenges…and we in Dominica we have been able to hold strain, not one public officer has lost a job through the crisis that started in 2008,” Skerrit said.

He said that no public worker has had to face a salary cut and “we have not imposed any new taxes in this period of time, not because there isn’t a need for it or justification for it, but simply because this government has stated it is not going to place any undue burden on the people of Dominica.I thought we were doing the best in the Caribbean so who beat him he crying? he even admitting St. Lucia is the biggest economy but wait nuh he did not tell us recently we are the fastest growing economy and the rest of the Caribbean is envious of Dominica! and when things are tight people turn to the Labour parties eemmmmh! I think people go into labour under labour for is just pain and more pain….

HOPE YOU READ FOR YOURSELF: remember this is the same PM- that just dish out 500,000 just so; to a church and he say doh question him because is the Lord who told him to do this and that…..

What BS – We had VAT before any of the OECS islands; our eklectricity rates are the highest; we have the highest rate of income tax some OECS juridistions do not have income tax while our slaries are among the lowest; we have the lowest Foriegn direct investment per capita among the OECS; we have the biggest and largest cabinet of Ministers; and I can go on and on; but we still beating our chest we doing good. Now is the time to put your money where your mouth is [ is now you crying. Is not we that say we doing good is you and your cronies that day in day out all you fooling Dominicans with all you propaganda and now the shit hit the fan you crying well is now you start to cry — pay us and vex with us you to bold face~!!!!!

The UWP is so Bitter. You people make me want to vote for Skerrit even if I do not support his style of government.

Is it not the second time around for that appointment? Were there any disappointing feedback from OECS the last time he did it? Take it easy people. Even though it is a rotated position what is the big deal? The hatred of one man has made the supporters of UWP bitter towards their country and everything Dominican.

If that is the attitude you want to take and bring into the Government, stay right whee you all are…..in the fowl house.

Back Bench Observer, Please be seated on the Front Bench for this gentle advice. To respect anyone and in this case Skerrit he has to earn it.. And I am telling you NOW that he has not earned it and he has a long way to go to earn our respect and trust as he currently holds a privileged office which has been abused. You go and ask him, ask his colleagues and friends etc etc. . It is NOT a free for all giver. You have to demonstrate to me that he, Skerrit has uphold the high office of Prime Minister, honourably and not abuse or has abused it. There are a lot of cases and questions hanging around this mans head.
DNO and “Matt in the Morning” is the place where we exhale and let our feelings of poor government known and demand respect and we want him OUT…… He has betrayed us….disrespected the office of Prime Minister and YOU want me to show respect for him as head of the OECS.
Have you heard Skerrit utter one, at least one policy advice or initiative on anything substantial as it relates to the OECS as a grouping. If not this is just a privileged holding for a year and then move on.
    God Bless Dominica

I am ashamed of some of you fouldeaded individuals and idiots that is if you show respect to your own parents much more for another individual and Prime Minister this is why you will continue to stay in the foul house and brag on the foulhouse radio Q this radio Q has brought Division to the country that has never been seen before all this because of hatred to one man ,but I will say this he was put there by the ballot and will be removed by the Ballot and I do not see this happening in the near future, because you UWP supporters have brought hatred and division to this my beautiful country ,I say this because never in our history you found this happed when DLP and DFP were the only political parties on the island during my 64yrs and this is only you ask the man for a $5.00 and you did not get it.
Do you think that Dominica is the only country in the world ,well I say to you leave home for a while and you will se for yourself how good people have it in other countries.During my lifetime it’s the first time that I have seen so much infrastructure developement in Dominica ,Roads and Bridges have been constructed where no one thought or even dreamt that it could be done plaanes can land after 10.pm all of the bridges between PondCase and MelvilleHall are now reconstructed to accommodate two lane traffic did UWP and DFP did them even the Melville Hall bridge in Edison’s eye he could not do it but instead of doing them they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring Dominicans to look for Sun Rise when he could spend it on the Marigot Hospital and don’t wait for now to say that he was concerned about Hospital .I do not live in Domnique, but I can go on and on but till next time .
Now some of you are asking for Election and voters list and so on but the list was there when UWP was in power and with all the talk about clean up voters list I have not heard one of the Opposition persons who can pinpoint to any persons name that is on the list that should not be there otherwise they should take that persons name and highlight it to whoever they are supposed to or take it to court as they are accustomed to do they still have plenty of time because the Elections will be on the @@nd of December 2015 Have a nice day.

The P.M. making a big noise about regional integration. How is all that going to happen with all these Presidents? We would be the laughing stock of the world like Dominica is already.

It is high time that we respect the office of the Prime Minister whether you support him or not; after all he is the PM and we have to honor that; give honor to whom honor is due my Dominican people. If you do not have something proper to say it is best that you hold your comments to confine of your bedrooms but DNO is not the place for it. Let us a people wait for the election to decide who the next PM will be and if it is yours you will have the time to help change the country. But I am telling you that, no PM or government is going to make a difference to what is going on. But guess what? if you think that any government is coming to fulfill your desires, well you are out for a big surprise. With all the empty promises they make to get voted in, they cannot meet; it’s just talk like all the others before have done. Again if you feel you can change it, give it a try for yourself but I can assure you when you get there, you will fill your pockets and forget those who vote for you as well.
Oppositions should help build a country as well, they should seek to work together with the present administration to make a unified
Dominica and not one that is divided as it is now. THAT RED AND BLUE BUSINESS NEED TO STOP.

I will always respect the Office of Prime Minister, just as I respect the Office of the President but not necessarily the occupant. That respect is individual and has to be earned. We are guaranteed this freedom of opinion, expression and speech under the Constitution, which I respect above all.

        June 19, 2014

You sound like the office of the pm or president is simply the structure, wood and blocks – it is the person occupying the officces. The protocols that the office commands cannot be bestowed on the office – wood and blocks – it has to be bestowed on the individual. There is no separation of the two. You do not have to respect Mr Skerrit or Mr Savarin when they vacate the offices, but while the are the incumbents you have to give the individuals the respect. So stop the ignorance, to respect the office is to respect the incumbents – the people occupying the offices.

You poor soul. It is not just the physical structure that counts. It is the concept, the symbolic meaning of the highest order, representing the country’s highest ideals and no one occupying such an office should besmirch it. Even U.S. Presidents get impeached for doing exactly that.

On the contrary, I pity him because I do believe that he is misguided on a path that does not lead our small country to salvation. Dominica will survive but the P.M.’s legacy may not and I will sincerely pray for him so that he may find the peace in his heart that every human being deserves, you included. May God bless us all.

You fail to see the point. Do you think if he is not the leader you perceive him to be, he would in 2014, prior to the 2015 election be appointed OECS Chairman? He did not appoint himself. He was appointed. Use your common sense. Do you have any?

Dear lady, he has little choice in the matter. It simple is his turn to do his tour of duty. Although no one will say so, most of the Caribbean leaders see it as an unwelcome distraction. it is more of a symbolic, figure head position than anything else. The OECS secretariat carries on with its work regardless of who happens to be the chairman of the moment, and pray he does not start interfering too much.

really DNO?what is wrong with this comment? there are sooooo many more comments that are worse than this and this comment gets hidden due to low comment rating? you are so biased and unfair

ADMIN: I think we explained before that that the hidden comment rating has nothing to do with us but is a plug in by WordPress, the system used by DNO. The plug in automatically hides a comment after it received a certain amount of ‘thumbs down.’ We have no control over it.

Don’t expect anything to change the brother has fundamental issues with speech and the English language. There is no solution to that it had to be addressed at a certain pt in time and it was not. Therapy cannot be initiated at such a late stage. It;s like a cancer which has spread to all over the body organs.
Remember” Instru” from Team Dominica 95-2000 and his English? The sad thing he was born in England!! SMH! Eddie went to England and learn to speak good English despite his ahfouahwee accent. LL did not finish high school but give him his flowers he can bluff his way through. After all who were his parents? God bless both their souls.

If you want to be happy in this life and in the thereafter, you must change your mannerisms. This includes the other critics who never cease.

I have highlighted a very important issue.

Our P M needs to improve on his speech and one way of achieving this is by engaging an editor! I believe that this is constructive criticism.

We cannot continue to allow our PM to be wrongly described as being illiterate !

I am not pleased with Skerrit’s leadership in Dominica, I certainly DO NOT look forward to his leadership of the OECS…he does not nor has he made himself credible and qualified enough to hold this prestigious position.

I need him to attempt to talk about “championing the cause on good governance” in Dominica and the OECS.
I doubt he understands the merits and value of the OECS and even CARICOM. He is just NOT that type of leader.
Skerrit has reduced himself to, or created the RED CLINIC mentality of representation. Dominica and Dominicans deserves better,

Chairmanship of O.E.C.S is rotated amongst the leaders. It could be pappy for PM he’d have to chair the sessions for the mandatory period. Matter of fact it becomes a country’s turn to assume chairmanship. its not like there was an AGM and Skerro was elected. its not Skerrit’s first time as O.E.C.S Chairman.
Now if you want to make it his last …………………….
