PM Skerrit calls on fathers to take care of their children

Skerrit said fathers should not leave care of children to mothers alone
Skerrit said fathers should not leave care of children to mothers alone

Prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit is calling on fathers in Dominica to take up their responsibility and care for their children, saying it should not be left to the mothers alone.

“You cannot leave it to the women alone to take care of the children,” he said. “You cannot come and say you love [her] and you have children with [her] and just turn your back.”

Skerrit was addressing a ceremony which saw 119 people, mostly single mothers, complete a training module organized through the Dominica Employment and Small Business Support Agency of the Ministry of Employment, Trade, Industry and Diaspora Affairs. They all received skills certificate from the Dominica State College.

According to the prime minister, children do not only need financial but also emotional support from their fathers.

“It is a shame to any man in the world, Dominica included, where a mother has to take the father of her child to court to give her something for this child every week, every month. You cannot do that,” he stressed.

The prime minister is the father of two boys, Malik and Dmitry.

Concern: I am a father of two and I just cannot be there emotionally for my children, not because I don’t want to but their mom is just impossible. too lengthy for detail but I think of them on a daily and wish that it could be different. I do support financially but I know that it still isn’t enough.

It definitely is hard to be there emotionally for your children when their mom makes it hard. I really suggest loving your children through their mother. She may be hard to deal with but be creative in the ways that you show her love. I am not speaking of emotional love because it is clear that you guys are most likely not in an intimate relationship but right now she is the barrier to you and your children. If you come at her with difficulty she will retaliate with difficulty, but a soft answer dispels wrath. Try it out!!

I know that I will get alot of dislikes for my comment but I will still make it. Alot of you crying for the women who make children with men and the men often don’t bother with them, DON’T GET ME WRONG I HAVE ALL THE SYMPATHY FOR THE CHILDREN is the mothers I don’t feel sorry for (some of them). Imagine a ‘woman’ know the man married or staying with his woman for how many years and the woman still troubling him for sex, he telling her to leave him alone but she still bothering him asking him if he haven’t got a life, when she get pregnant he ignoring her and the child but she will still send him a text telling him ‘I know you ignoring me because you don’t want to give my money for your child but I want sex’. She get pregnant again and he still do the same thing. Do you blame the man? No. I agree he should have a conscience but hey if he can get away with it why wouldn’t he.

Some women will see a man have his wife/family they like what they see so the want some of it. Those men so nasty to fall for it. All those men want is sex and if a women willing to give it to them they will take it.

Gone are the days when women had pride in themselves, so don’t just blame the men.

The PM has given a good directive. I do think as the PM he has every right to speak about it. This is to bear your responsibility. Wished that all PM’s and Presidents of the world would say likewise. They must tell it like it is.
If fathers of all do not support their children we do know that it falls on the government and taxpayers to foot the bill.
Some have not heard it from anyone else and not even their parents. Fortunate today for those who hear it from their PM. I hope they keep it in mind and practice what he stated.
Children also need their fathers. Those who support their children in every respect, in the end, they will be happier for it. They must also set a good example for them.
There are fathers who, today, are happy that they bore their responsibilities and are proud of their children. They also share in their children’s achievements even as adults.
Fortunate for me my parents bore their responsibilities to their children. My father never shirked from it. Whenever I speak of them it is with pride and of their nurturing and discipline.
Therefore, do not criticize the PM if he has given you good advice, to those of you who do not care about your children. Keep in mind they are children and they require as much love from their fathers. The love is not only monetary and materialism.
They are only children once and how that time flies. Make their childhood as happy as possible. It is something they will always remember and repeat throughout their life.
When they have children of their own, they will never forget their parents and their nurturing. They will also pass it on to their children. It is said that patterns are set from one generation to another. Therefore do your utmost to be as good, caring fathers as possible.
God bless you Dominican fathers wherever you may reside. :)

Some men in Dominica should be in America, u would see how quick they would garnish their wages, license revoked, and still go to jail, jail, jail. I know sometimes people fall on hard times due to illness, loss of job etc. But I know some men personally, who are just out there, sleeping with every one and not taking responsibility for their own actions.

Women sometimes, if it looks like a dog it backs like a dog it is not a cat, IT IS A DOG. Some of us women, I know men can fool us, but some of us we make our self too easy for these men. “Why go buy milk, when they could get it for free”. Respect your selves as women, and I but you, If you stand your ground, though matter they would say you think you all that, it is ok.

Women have to try to protect themselves. And also the saddest thing is, disease, contagious disease some can heal and some will be a life sentence. No one can protect you except yourself. God Bless our young and old women in Dominica, and please, “STAND YOUR GROUND”. YOUTH AND BEAUTY PASSES AWAY SO QUICKLY.

I don’t condone everything the PM is saying and doing, but lets put politics aside for a while. What he is saying is true, true, true, Even some women I know who are married, they are still carry the pants in the house, while their husbands spend their monies on other women and younger girls.

Even those who are calling on Q95, they are not no example. Some of them use their children to build their empire, and have lots of property, and would not help their own children to give them a jump start. Some of them are even so called Christians. Not because someone is not doing the right thing, does not mean they cannot talk about right and wrong, especially when comes to the well being of our children, who are the future of our country.

I personally don’t do everything right, but I still can say when something is wrong, and when something is making a lot of sense. Men, pull your pants up, take care of your responsibilities and stop blaming the government for you cannot support your child. When you were having fun with the woman, was the Government there? And also some women, get your self worth together. Not because they are cute they are good. Educate yourself and also take responsibility.

I have heard of such types of fathers. Only when some of them get old and their children are employed and also successful they know them.
Know that God will hold them accountable for their uncaring attitude by not honoring their fatherly obligation even though their children are adults.
I understand your feeling. When you needed him he was willfully absent. He should tell you that he is sorry and mean it and ask for your forgiveness.
If he is in need of and especially if he asks you for assistance, for the love of God do not hesitate to help him if you can; not to shame him but that he will feel ashamed for the times he did not care. During their life, their works return to hunt them in time and they will get the feeling of remorse.
You know, two wrongs do not make a right. Furthermore pray to God to assist you to forgive him. You will receive God’s blessing.

Prayer For Forgiveness (there are other ones)

Lord Jesus, I come before you, just as I am. I confidently ask You to assist me in my necessity by Your Divine Power and Mercy. GIve me grace to amend my life.
I am sorry for my sins, I repent of my sins, please forgive me. In your name, I forgive all others for what they have done against me. I renounce Satan and all his works. I give you my entire self Lord Jesus, now and forever. I invite you in my life Jesus, I accept you as my Lord and Saviour. Heal me, change me, strengthen me in body, soul and spirit.

Come Lord Jesus cover me with Your Precious Blood and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I love You, Lord Jesus. I praise You Lord Jesus. I thank You Lord Jesus. Amen!

You could give or send this prayer to your father. God knows he is in need of making amends, to ask forgiveness and make atonement to God for what he has done.
      God bless you!

I blame both parents for the predicament in which the women find themselves.Ladies,if a man has already fathered children with different women, and is not caring for them, what makes you think he’ll treat you differently? Why are you so willing to be his mistress(fam coupay)? Do some of you even see yourselves as wife material?
Men and brothers come on.Aren’t you aware that your children need to be loved, clothed, fed and sheltered? I’m no stranger to poverty and i will tell you plain it’s not a pretty thing.Poverty is a crime against humanity.Delinquent fathers should be held criminally negligent for abandoning their children.
The state(Government) should upgrade the laws and aggressively pursue those dilinquent fathers.Go after their paycheques,bank/credit union accounts and imprison them for disobeying the court orders.Remember upon release from jail they will still be owing that money.Zenfan ni pour mangay too.Ladies take them to court.Magistrates/Judges pee on those who think they are village rams.

    • February 25, 2014

@Rhum Bouco, you are partially right. Both parents are at fault for the predicament in which they find themselves in. “If a man has already fathered children with different women and is not caring for them, what makes you think he’ll treat you differently?” True, but some do. I do not think a woman should be any man’s mistress.

What, in your opinion, is “wife material?”

Apparently, they do not care. They know full well that their children need to be “loved, clothed, fed, and sheltered”. I agree that “Delinquent fathers should be held criminally negligent for abandoning their children”.

I also agree that “The State (Government) should upgrade the laws and aggressively pursue those delinquent fathers.” By any means necessary. I further agree that the custodial parent, man/woman, should take the non-custodial parent to Court for child support.

This option do not always work. I was married to mine and I had to take him to Court for support. Although there was a Court Order he was delinquent. If there was NO Court Order, I would NOT get anything. There are times his license would be suspended to get him to pay up.

THE CHILDREN ARE INNOCENT, THEY DID NOT ASKED TO BE BORN.

    • Simply the Turth
      February 25, 2014

Sadly, those children suffer and for years especially when they are in need of their father. This could affect them throughout their adult life. It is not something they could forget.
The responsibility of parents should be taught in schools at a certain age, as in high schools and in the churches.
What also happens, by this bad example, they create a pattern for their children especially males who emulate them when they grow older.
How often have I heard some people said (as a few have told me) that as adults and married men, they tell their wives/girlfriends their father had other women and their mother said nothing. Therefore they can do the same. They think nothing of it. This is a great destroyer of relationships and marriages especially in this era. Some of them never learned to genuinely love.

And I am calling on the police to execute with urgency all warrants for maintenance arrears that come into their hands, and for the staff at the Magistrate court to make these warrants AS SOON AS THEY FALL DUE. All after the man did not pay the maintenance ordered by the court, the woman has to go back to court to get an order for him to pay these arrears or go to jail for disobeying the order. The man agrees to pay the arrears at a certain amount per month. He still does not pay it and it takes the people in the magistrate court months to finally prepare the warrant and another month for the police to execute it. This is not right. The system is not working as it should and it is the poor children that suffer.

Women in Canada/Toronto had to lobby the government to make those men pay up for support of their children. Some mothers who also could not afford to support the child/children had to resort to welfare assistance. The government was aware of that. When government has to pay out money they will eventually do something about it. :)
The women took the men to Court. The money is paid through the Courts and the women get support for their children. It is retroactive. Less financial burden on the government. :)
I am trying to remember the name that they call those men, “dead beat dads.” Just remembered. :)
What is more there is a Website with their names which informs the world who they are. :) That is one way of shaming them.
Today, they are obligated to bear their responsibility to the children they fathered. Of course a DNA will be conducted to prove that they are the biological fathers.
Everyone has a social insurance number. Therefore, if they are employed in this country, they must pay taxes. The government will find them. If they cannot be found an investigation could also be conducted on them.
If they fail to pay support and they are found, are able to pay it and refuse, they will be imprisoned and whenever they are found. If they are unemployed, they will be advised to seek employment. If they are receiving unemployment insurance or whatever form of income, their wages will be garnished. Those who have had this experience can vouch for that. That is the Law without fail!

    • February 26, 2014

I beleive that when a Magistrate makes an order for the men to pay arears they should make sure it’s paid to the Court on a specify date after which the women can go and pick up the money, because it shouldnt be left up the women to try to collect the money from the men.
The system should work in the best interest of the child or children that are not getting proper care it’s time the Courts stop joking around with those fathers that believe they cannot be touched.

This situation begs the question; Does behavior become genetics that are passed on to the ofspring? The majority of Dominicans are descendants of AFRICAN SLAVES. A well known fact is a category of slaves selected by the slave masters called BREEDERS. They had no connection with the slave women they impregnated except for providing the master with another ‘TET NEGRE’. We all know how profitable that was to the master at that time. In our times a man seem to gain bragging rights if he could move from village to village like a bee with flowers and deposit his mark there not meddling to clean up after. Few animals in nature behave in that way. We need to set a time for ATONEMENT!

This father has over 6000.00 pending in court for child maintenance they still don’t respect the court system, they need to be given stiffer penalties the woman did not make the child by herself so it is not for one party to care for the child.

Though it is true that a woman should investigate a man before she puts herself with him but alot of them come like wolves in sheep’s clothing so she won’t know all of him until it is too late. They wait for when they break up with the woman or if the woman breaks up with them for them for them to play their dirty part so,they turn their backs on the children or child inorder to hurt the woman.

But, I am saying once a man is not sick or cripple he should he should be able to maintain his child or children or he should be put before the court.

If you do not know how a child came about, you are still an innocent child.
If you fall into that category you better support your child. One day the child will grow up to adulthood. That child may have children and you will be the grandfather. When you see them how will you feel? Would you not regret that you did not recognize the child as yours and failed to support him/her?
Time lost can never be regained. It is water that passed under the bridge which flowed into the sea. Always bear your responsibility.

    • Simply the Turth
      February 25, 2014

Everyone was not meant to be rich or well to do. As Our Lord said, “We will always have the poor with us.” This means, there will always be poor people. It all depends how they live.
Some are or were married and they are poor. Somehow God provides. Their children eventually grew up and are now independent. Some are successful people.
Poverty of bygone years and poverty of today are different. There is nothing wrong being poor as long as they have a roof over their head, food to eat and clothes to wear. Only the minimum is necessary. If the weather is a tropical one, those who have property can grow fruits and vegetables.
The saying, “God help those who help themselves.” People have to help themselves. Some mothers sewed; some made hats and mats, etc. for a living. They could start at a young age. Today, schooling as high school is free in Dominica. Times today are not the same as in those days.
Some people of today, even though they earn a living, due to the high cost of living, they try to economize by also making their own clothes, doing their hair, cooking home-made food, etc. All in all people have to help themselves. As the saying, “It is survival of the fittest.”

This is a child that will never be in want and even when he grows to adulthood and aged. I am certain his father took out an insurance policy for him and whatever else which could help him throughout his college/university years. He is a fortunate child.
The PM is a responsible and proud father. He fulfills his obligation very well. Some of you could learn from him. You should commend him for that. He should receive a medal, a citation for one of the best fathers in Dominica, if not the best.

My God it beggars belief at one or two of your responses, it does not matter whether you are married or single look afteryou damm children. There are many married men who live with their children and do not provide a penny Iin the house ask rhe judges or social workers. I believe that both man and woman should be responsible for children.Prime Minister 20 out of 10 points for your advise, men women think before you jump.

Charge them further and throw them in prison. Progressive countries do that if they are employed, can afford it and fail to pay child support.
When they don’t pay it is the responsible of the government and also taxpayers to support the children.

If a child is born or children are born from those relationships, they must be supported. If the parents are not able to do so, the government bears the cost. This is the way the system works.

I think most absentee fathers are wicked worthless piece of ish men. If you and a woman have a kid that’s your flesh and blood I mean as a big man you should be responsible and try to make sure that kid grows up to be functioning member of society. You have to help provide for them and guide them on the right path.

On the other hand women who go and make children for married men…dead beat unambitious fellers on the block etc. And those who make children for men that don’t want to try and trap them are more worthless than the absentee dads.

People need to realize when children come into play u in control of somebody else life and their future. Be responsible and unselfish.

And just how are the fathers suppose to provide for their children financially when Mr Skerrit has done everything in his power to ensure that Dominica males do not get employed? All jobs are done by foreigners? Get our young men involved in some gainful employment for them to provide for the kids and ladies. Stop giving their jobs to your foreign friends. Hypocrite!

From the responses I am reading Skerrit needs to READ and do some research first before he comes out and spew advice really un related the issue at hand. By the way, why is it that Skerrit is attending every ceremony and giving all kinds of funny addresses? I mean, where are the ministers to whom these ministries are assigned to them. Don`t they have a message too.
Now these fathers are in a conflict, rather the PM and government provide jobs for these mothers, the fathers cannot find them because they are outside the PM`s office queuing at the RED CLINIC for money.

Child support need to be higher than the $20 a week mothers are receiving. And also those mothers that don’t take care of there children should pay child support to whom ever that’s taking care of them.

    • Simply the Turth
      February 25, 2014

Is this all the mothers are receiving for child support, $20 a week? In Dominica? Men who are gainfully employed can afford to pay more than that. How much does $20 purchase to feed and cloth a child and purchase other necessities?
If the mothers are employed and obtain a certain salary they could afford to support their children. Then I could understand $20 a week for a child. It must be determined if both parents are employed or if only one and how much they could afford to support the child.

Well said Mr. PM. Some of these men out there just make me sick. Including my own father. Had I known where he was buried I woulda go to the cemetary and beat him down 3 more feet.

    • Simply the Turth
      February 25, 2014

Do not worry. Forgive him. His soul may be presently paying for the wrong he did. God does not overlook those sins. We also call them negligence. I hope he had time to ask God forgiveness.
As the religious song: “Jesus never forgets.” He does not forget the good and He does not forget the bad, the latter, especially if forgiveness was not asked for and not given. The price must be paid.
Therefore, it is always better to do good; far better. We need to inform others about that.

How about the mothers of these young women instilling in them a sense of pride to place value on their bodies.

If our men will not take responsibility, then our women should not allow themselves to be used as sex toys for these men.

If they will not commit to you in a long term relationship, do not tie yourself down by making a baby with these men.

Protectg yourself ladies, these men are after sex and they usually have multiple women. Do not throw away your future.

Too many have done that in the past. It does not only occur in D/ca. It occurs all over the world. There are some children having children. There are many reasons for that. This situation especially in Toronto or Canada for that matter is bad.

    February 25, 2014

I commend the men of the world who have taken the responsibility of fatherhood seriously. Some of us are very fortunate to share children with these amazing men. Unfortunately, there are many dead beat dads out there, who have impregnated women, then deliberately neglect the children. Do these men have a conscience? How can a man go about his day to day business knowing that he has children who are being deprived? Ladies, stop spreading your legs for the known dead beats. Your children deserve better!

        February 25, 2014

Yes it does happen all over the world, but in Dominica it is the norm and children are only catching a glimpse of their fathers as they lime on the roadside. And everyone quoting the Bible!!! But nobody is actually reading it. It is a disgusting and selfish way to produce children – or “breed” as we say in Dominica – like cows or dogs. Get a grip people, your way is terrible and cruel!!!

        February 25, 2014

@Alexy What he is talking about there is the gospel truth. Did it drive a dart into your flesh?. Despite the fact that you hate it, it remains the truth. The other thing is these children will inherit a Dominica impoverished by bad, greedy and inept leadership.
