PM Skerrit says withdrawal of US from Paris accord an important lesson

Skerrit said Russia, the Caribbean and Latin America must work together

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has said the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Accord is an important lesson and countries in the Caribbean can no longer rely on countries from the “northern region” for assistance.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum now taking place in Russia, Skerrit said the region must now define a new path of integration.

“We just witnessed the decision by the United States to move away from the Paris Accord,” he stated. “And I think this is a very important lesson for us in the Caribbean, Latin America and of course Russia, that we need to now define our own process of integration and working together.

He said certain regions cannot be depended on for assistance.

“No longer can we rely on certain northern regions to assure us of a better way of life for our citizens,” he stated.

He noted that although many currencies are pegged to the United States, there must there are lessons to be learned from the approach of the United States.

“I believe that with the advancement of the Eurasia, Russian, Caribbean/ Latin American relationship we can overcome those challenges, we have to define a new path for ourselves,” Skerrit said.

The Prime Minister commended the leadership of Russia “for the perspective which it brings to the international forum.”

“The Caribbean, in particular, is looking to this with interest and is something we would like to be a part of,” he stated.

On Thurday, US President Donald Trump announced that he was withdrawing the US from the Paris climate accord. The move was seen by many as a way of dampening worldwide effort to curb global warming.

The accord sets out a global action plan to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2°C.

From the moment I heard of the London terrorist attack I was very concerned mainly because I know our Passports are being sold world wide, like hot bread to crooks and crminals. Now attackers are revealed and we now know that so far one is from Morraco, I am trembling so much, especially as I am reminded of a blog I read recently about some 10,000 blank Passports that a top Morracan leader was linked to. June 5, 2017

While Skerritt mentions US pulling out of Paris Climate Change accord he forgot completely that he went to Parliament, changed the law so that he could give 15 acres of our Cabrits National park to the foreigner Range development.

On top of that irresponsible and backward stance, the Skerritt-led DLP Gov’t. gave the foreign firm, Range Dev. our passports to sell, to make millions to fund the building of a hotel in the Cabrits area, that would belong to Range Dev. Where is the ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (EIA)? What about the pollution to the marine environment in the area? Where is the excreta and other pollutants going?

Where are the EIA’s for major National projects?

What about the environmental disaster at the airport at Melville Hall re. the frequent flooding of the airport because of bad work done previously?

Some of you do not appreciate the PM’s statement to the point of criticism. When some of you were not aware about global warming and climate change, it was discussed at length in the US and with other progressive countries. Al Gore was at the forefront of it, going about speaking of it and trying to get everyone to believe it. Know that not everyone believed then and still do today.
Those members of humanity who believe in it would do well to conform to the Will of God. Many do not; some do not even recognize God.
Humanity worry about these matters and how long will they live?
Pertaining to this emission and relevant matters they discuss and argue about, let every country take care of its own. Each government should set the necessary requirement of what they require/should be and what is imported to their own country.
As for the smaller tropical countries, why should they be copycats and concern themselves about it?
Frankly, I am not concerned one bit.

    June 5, 2017

Dr. Skerritt was having a prep meeting with an angel as to what would happen on his death. The angel said: ”Well, you are a PM and have kept your nose reasonably clean, I guess, heaven should be the route for you.” The Hon. Dr. responded: ”So, that’s guaranteed?”. The angel said: ” I guess, but you will need to prove who you are when get to the gates for us to let you in. Even Picasso and Einstein had to do this.” The Hon. Dr. said: ” Should not be a problem. But, by the way, who’s Einstein and Picasso?” The angel said: ”There you go, that should be excellent proof of who you are”.

How many Dominicans living and working in the U.S dependent upon their jobs? Where do most of the tourists coming to Dominica come from, including Cruise Ships?

They come to America for jobs and work, and depend on the tourism for money, and yet, Trump who is trying to protect the jobs they have is now the boogeyman.

Ask Skerritt to petition Putin and China to take more Dominicans in for jobs since he cannot depend on his northern neighbor for handouts. Tell the Dominicans who left in the diaspora who work in the United States and sends money back that his northern neighbor cannot be dependent upon (for jobs), because that is what the Paris Agreement is really about – protecting jobs.

First of all, one cannot take anything Trump says as an indication of the overall US policy towards the world. Trump is a climate denier, so if you want to establish relations with Putin, say that but don’t blame Trump’s reckless action for what you intends to do. You and Putin have one thing in common, “persecute political Opponents.”

Trump is just brilliant, there’s a new world leader, it’s not business as usual. Trump has a business approach to governance every leader should take note. America contributes 1 billion dollars while China, India and others contributes zero dollars? he puts America first. that’s making America GREAT again and if skerrit is not with us he ie against us. you will have to take your children to Russia.

    WOOOOOWW!!!!

SO my7 prime minister say it is a lesson? how can he possibly think that because of this withdrawal that the northern regions no longer will offer aid to the caribbean? why do people reallky think that the paris climate accord had anything to do wqith civil issues or even people for that matter??

people have to be seriously blind or seriouslu crazy to even think that this accord benifited the caribbean in any way shape or form, the climate accord is a deal between china, india and the u.s that u.n will apply amendments and taxes towrds countries who donot comply with carbon emision laws laid out by the m, now the trick is that the most high producing carbon countries get to keep there plants on and keep going on , but the countries who have more money anf dpower must submit theirs qnd close all their plants, in order to level them out…

  14. Attention Ismael: Alan Emtage Is A West Indian Born And Grew Up In Barbados – FET.

Alan Emtage invented the world’s first search engine, but he didn’t earn a single cent from his groundbreaking invention. “I wrote a piece of code that gave birth to a multibillion-dollar industry,” he tells The Huffington Post in an exclusive video interview. “I didn’t make any money off of it, but I wouldn’t change anything.”

The self-proclaimed geek majored in computer science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and was working as a systems administrator for the School of Computer Science, where he was responsible for finding software for students and faculty. At the time, there was no other way to locate the software beyond a manual search through the directory archives, a “tedious process” that he decided to automate.

“We built this very simple program that allowed people to do the search themselves,” the native of Barbados says. The program needed a name, so Emtage called it…

    • Continue:

The program needed a name, so Emtage called it “Archie,” which is “archive” without the V. Within months, half the internet traffic to Canada was going to the innovator’s machine.
“At the time, nobody was making money off of the Internet, and we didn’t patent any of the original ideas behind Archie,” he explains. “So the patents would have been where I would have made the money.” Archie used the same techniques that every current search engine uses, so, Emtage adds, “in that way, Archie was the great great grandfather of Google and all of those other search engines.”

Today, the Search industry earns $780 billion dollars annually. Emtage sees none of that money, but he is completely at ease with it. “I don’t feel like a father of anything,” he states. “It’s not how I think of myself really … Every now and again, I interact with somebody who’s a real idiot, and I think to myself, ‘Yeah, but you know what? I invented the search engine.’”

Most posts here are clearly ignorant of the facts. Russia and China could care less about Dominica. They care about a single UN vote. Russia to hit back on US influence in Europe, China to not recognize the democratic country of Taiwan. If Dominica wants to buddy up to Russia, China and Chavez/Madurro wreck of a country, feel free. In terms of Paris Accord, it was a single fiat decision by the disaster called Obama. He could not get his own party to get a treaty done so he just declared it. Trump can reverse easily because it is not law. And the only thing it does is transfer wealth from the US taxpayer to 3rd world corrupt countries. When the rest of the world gives up everything the US invented over the last 100 years (while emitting carbon) then come talk to the US. Otherwise, we are tired of the despots and tinpots and corrupt dictators plotting to take out the greatest country in the last 1000 years.

Dominicans, please put partisan politics and open all you eyes to see that PM Skerrit is just being used as an attack dog for the Russian and we will one day pay a heavy price for our stupidity. When the UN placed Sanction on Iran, it is alleged that the Iranians through people like Aliereza Monfared and others, were able to use Skerrit to violate oil sanctions, by registering ships in Dominica and had them sailing from Greece with Dominica flag. As we speak Raza Zarrab, one of the leading conspirators in the Iran Oil sanction is jailed in the US with no bail and I would not be surprised to hear some breaking news about Dominica. In December the US put some Sanctions on Russia that is affecting them and here is Skerrit again taking the Russians bait to come and talk his nonsense against the US and his crap about Caribbean islands and Russia working on visa free. We laughing and taking it as a joke but it not because if we are not careful Skerrit will put us in trouble if he hasn’t.

Here it is he’s supposed to be addressing an event far from the issue of Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris accord, but his bad habit of flattery beggarism lips can’t be controlled! All he sees from Trump’s withdrawal is benefits being lost when in fact the issue of Trump has only to do with climate change and global warming. Whilst he’s trying to flatter Putin, Putin himself is saying that he does not blame Trump. He this dumb prime mistake is asking for visa free travel and the only reason I can think of,is to sell more passports as people of Dominica don’t travel to Russia.I’m more convinced that this trip is all about rogue dealings!!!

    • The Attack Dog
      June 2, 2017

@justice, don’t be fooled about everybody having a right to be for or against Paris Accord because that’s not what Skerrit is in Russia for. If it were about Paris accord as you believe, then tell me what visa free for Caribbean and Russian nationals have to do with Paris Accord? The fact of the matter is, Russia is under severe sanctions from the US and just as we saw when sanction was placed on Iran, Monfared and others were able to use Skerrit to violate oil sanction, so to Russia is using that same Skerrit to threaten the US with Caribbean and Russia working on visa free arrangement. Those of you that seem to know about justice but continue to justify Skerrit’s actions, will one day cause Dominica to pay a very high price for his nonsense

    • There is nothing wrong with Roosevelt critiquing Donald Trump; what is wrong is the nonsense Skerrit spoke! His mind is so corrupt, so hungry for money he believes the Paris Accord is about handing free money to people like him to fill his pocket.

      I quote Roosevelt Skerrit:

“Accord is an important lesson and countries in the Caribbean can no longer rely on countries from the “northern region” for assistance.”(Roosevelt Skerrit).

For your education Justice, the following is a brief on what the Paris Accord is all about, that is one of Obama last accomplishment prior to him ending his tenure as President of the United States. That is public information, if Roosevelt was informed he would not have spoken the nonsense as in the quote above.

“World leaders from 175 countries signed the historic Paris climate accord Friday, using Earth Day as a backdrop for the ceremonial inking of a long-fought deal that aims to slow the rise of harmful greenhouse gases.”
      “We are in a…

    • Continue:

“We are in a race against time.” U.N. secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the gathering at the United Nations headquarters in New York. “The era of consumption without consequences is over.”

“The poor and most vulnerable must not suffer further from a problem they did not create,” Ban added.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry signed the document while holding his young granddaughter. She was one of 197 children at the event to represent the parties that adopted the agreement, Ban said.

“These young people are our future. Our covenant is with them,” Ban said. “Today is a day for our children and grandchildren and all generations to come.”

The non-binding treaty, approved in Paris in December after years of U.N. climate negotiations, aims to slow the rise of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, blamed for putting Earth on a dangerous warming path.

It would be better if your opinion were supported by facts. Cuba’s relationship with the US goes way back to the Spanish-American War in the late 19th century. Cuba received it’s Independence from Spain assisted by the US during that War. That relationship soured after the Castro Revolution and that’s when the USSR (not Russia) stepped in.

Have you been to Cuba? I have. Dominica is much nicer. And for all of the “stuff” China has built, do you understand the economics behind that? And for Chavez/Madurro alliance, do you understand what they have done to their country? The US sends hundreds of people a year to Dominica to volunteer, visit (with their disposable incomes i.e. tourists), protect the ENTIRE Carribean from drug cartels, communists (i.e. Granada) and a host of other baddies. Your in fantasy land if you think Russia and China gives a toot about Dominica. The difference is that the US and UK have policies that encourage capitalistic sustained growth, not socialist handouts that are never ending (see GDP growth of France vs UK and unemployment). The real issue with Dominica is its size.

      Hendricks you are correct!

Nevertheless, until the more educated; and in particular the academically educated realize, the purpose of being academically educated is not to become dependent on the government for a job, but rather use their Skills, and training to developed industries, the status quo will forever remain the same in our country!

Everybody in Dominica, wants a Ph. D., so that they can be called doctor, but what about getting a doctorate in chemistry, and go into R&D (research and development), which may lead to some cure for a disease, hence a pharmaceutical industry can be developed in Dominica providing employment.

    • The government Ismael, creates the dependency: And by the way it is an insult to me when to refer to Roosevelt Skerrit as Dr. Skerrit!

There is no Dr. Skerrit; degrees are earned not bought from a non accredited university in Punjab India. And finally: “Imagine if Dr Skerrit did not think where would we be today.” Roosevelt Skerrit did not think anything! The sale of Dominica passports has set the country backwards, because that will eventually come to an end. Right now most of the passports sold are to criminals!

There are few people like the sales men and women benefiting from the sale, but how many jobs has that created for the ordinary man?

    • Finally:

“There a very few people on DNO who are smart telling us how to create jobs.”(Ismael).

If you look forward to getting information from someone on DNO, in regards to creating jobs, you will be waiting till-neve- ever! You see Ismael people are born with their mind as clean as a slate, we learn, and develop ideas.

No matter the business, the industry, the invention you find on the planet, the concept was conceived, and developed in the mind of a single individual, even an illiterate person has the ability to think of something. Here is an example, the idea of the Internet conceived in the mind of someone at a university in Los Angeles near where I live.. The search engines pertaining to the Internet, came out of the mind of guy from Barbados, in a university in Canada.

@ Hendricks – “people who have failed at life are always ignorant . No one should wait on government to create jobs for them.” Where did you pull that one from pappy? I’d like to see what your explanation is for that statement. My advice to you is, use a fake name; because most of us know who Hendricks Ismael is.

How could you say that a person (s) who has “failed at life is always ignorant?” I don’t understand, nuh! Ignorance is a broad topic, since each individual is ignorant of something.

Hendricks Ismael I’m glad I paid attention in school and I know to be a DOCTOR one have to first go to school then study for sometimes up to 6 years to get a doctorate, so tell us where and when did Skerrit obtained that doctorate degree, you see folks like you don’t think with the senses that was bestowed to you by the almighty it has been watered down to your brand of nonsense . Dominicans are hard working people all they want are jobs, and if Skerrit just stop giving his supporters the monies that he have access to and turn it to at least building 2 good plant my people will make it, hand out is just not the answer one gets some money today in two days it’s finish then another hand out when will it end.

Skerrit you are only puffing off hot air, but have not even understood why America withdrew from the Paris Climate Accord.. Why couldn’t you send someone who understands what climate change is, to speak on the issue? You are ALL OVER THE MAP brother., but you are very deficient on the substantive matter. I GRADE YOU 2/10. VERY POOR!! OMG! What a shame!. Even if your cabinet consists largely of clowns, but you have a few labourites who have a better handle of the subject than you are. USE THEM NAH! SHAMEFUL. America pulling out from something they are causing? I would have condemned them too.

Skerrit did good for once… and this comes from someone who does not believe in any politician be they red, green or blue…

You are just interested in blasting Skerrit… That kind of thinking is not positive.

When someone does good, say they did… If you don’t, all the bad you speak is all you will be known for… full of hot air, nothing to serious.

When you are blasting either leader, stop and think… what would the other one have done?

History has a nasty way of repeating itself. Why can’t we depend on ourselves to chart a path forward. This is the era of dependency during the skerrit regime. The Paris Accord is voluntary and there are no consequences for not enacting any of the agreements. Countries like Dominica like the agreement because it was supposed to be a revenue stream for thier dirty politics. I do not agree with Trump’s decision because it is dumb and baseless, however skerrit is looking for an excuse to mingle with the likes of ghadaffi, Putin, Chavez etc Al. Pretty soon he will go to North Korea. This guy does not understand we are pawn in the game of global dominance and influence. Or probably he does and just does not have the balls to come out of the dictator closet. Perfect excuse to now go all out with China and Russia. Trump is a test to American gov system. Putin and China are bad news for Dominican people. States in us will keep fight against Trump nationalism.

    • June 3, 2017

Every country looks out for its own interest, so what are you babbling about. You seem to be stuck in the cold war era where socialism was demonized by the US as they tried impose their ideology on the world. The US has the world banking industry in a strangle hold forcing countries to adhere to their banking laws under the guise of money laundering. The US is the biggest beneficiary of money laundering yet it continues to blacklist other countries suspected of money laundering. China and Russia are old civilizations much older than the US , but with a much less bullying attitude.

Skeritt was not the only one in Russia. There were 5,000 people including 1,000 Americans. This was not a meeting on climate change. A climate change meeting would be held by the U N. The Paris accord is a U N non binding agreement.

      June 3, 2017

Of course. And there are drastic changes in ambient conditions between day and night and between high tide and low tide. Once you learn these simple cycles, along come the sunspot cycle and the Milankovitch cycles (the wobble of Earth’s orbit) to complicate matters. None of these are runaway trends. Humans have a hand in all of them, though all of them have occurred since before humans, and there is no scientific way to know if what is happening is because of mankind or despite mankind, as there is no uninhabited test Earth to compare against. Now, how does it help anything to have UN bureaucrats bleed the US and send loot to Third World countries, which may or may not use it in environmentally healthy ways rather than just build up their armies? And why is Mr. Trump such an ogre for resisting this attempt to bully him into crippling his country?

    • June 3, 2017

Yes Paul! Don’t forget these things are also real too!

      1) We are spinning around on earth at 1000 miles an hour – ump up and we land back on the same place;
      2) We came from monkeys – however no monkeys can speak and play chess :)
      3) The earth is round. But as we speak now, people ‘down under’ are standing in the same direction as us;
      4) Was mankind responsible for the so-called ‘ice age’?
      5) If global warming is a thing, why is it that all the ‘planets’ discovered by NASA are so cold!!!!!
      6) We have a machine on Mars which we control via radio waves, but struggle to get the earth all wired up for communications.

Basically Paul, we have been fed bu*****t all our lives and global warming is really just the icing on the cake.

Grow up and stop being a fool. Think outside your mind-control mantle.

This constant accusation of hate is dividing the country and creating a breading ground for violence. Skerritt condemn a whole of countries based on the action of 1 man. I believe that this guy should seek the approval of the country before he goes about speaking on our behalf. This is a man who marries a woman to get American citizenship, has his children born there, has property there and banks there now tell us that America is not our friend, how hypocritical! He said certain regions cannot be depended on for assistance.

The Paris Accords is a treaty in international law. It has 100% of the legal attributes of a treaty. If you examine the UN website all the reporting on this accord treats it as a treaty. Under the US Constitution, treaties must be ratified by the United States Senate. Obama claimed to have unilaterally ratified the treaty. He had no such power.
The United States is not legitimately a party to this treaty. Thus, President Trump is not withdrawing from the Paris Accords. A nation must be a party to withdraw.
President Trump is simply giving the world notice that this act of Obama acting as a dictator was not valid.
The fact that Obama refused to send it to the Senate is all the evidence you need to know that it is an unwise treaty. If it was good for America, it could get ratified. In all of the hyperbole, the person who acted irresponsibly is the one who circumvented the Constitution and attempted to impose international control over this country all by himself. 8)

black ppl on Obama, like labourites stuck to Skerrit…. you’ve hit the nail on the head and many will be upset, since u put Obama in ‘bad’ light… it’s because they don’t understand what this is all about… they actually think, the Paris Deal is about better air, cleaner environment lol… this is all about manufacturing, import and export and money for corporations… Trump said hell no to that deal… if Americans can’t benefit then no need for it.

People giving your comment thumbs down because they can’t handle the truth. I’m willing to bet at least half of those people haven’t read any part of the documents for themselves.

Morehei, this is the crux of it and you are exactly right. Mr. Obama boasted that “I have a pen and a phone” and can get things done without the Congress. This is without legal basis, and anything he got done this way can get undone now that the other party has taken power. This means styling a treaty as an “accord” on runaway human-caused global warming-or-cooling, or a “deal” on the nuclear bomb for Iran. The US never ratified this treaty in the only way that the US has for ratifying treaties: TWO-THIRDS OF ITS SENATE.

If it was good it would be ratified? You follow majority rule politics?More like if my Party proposes it, it will be ratified. Do you honestly think that Congress would have ratified the Paris Agreement? Just like they allowed Obama to appoint the JUDGE.

Skerrit the “Paris Accord” is a bout Climate Change, according to the agreement it’s about dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020, not about colonialism or dependency on the developed nations to take care of the others,,, Is definitely not about “No longer can we rely on certain northern regions to assure us of a better way of life for our citizens,”

According to the latest reports you Fellows have be taunting the mantra that Climate change is the biggest issue affecting the Region so if you have anything to say concerning that should be ” Dominica as a developing economy should rethink its Stance on the concept of Climate Change” Done!!!

And you have a Doctorate in what again???

See this is why when people never been to school and they just get post and degrees,,,

Looks like you go behind them Russians to bail you out man for your upcoming litigated affairs at US Court,,,

So because you are unable to connect the dots between Trump’s selfishness in his withdrawal from the worlds efforts to deal with climate change (including assistance to poorer countries in their efforts to mitigate the effects and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels) and the need for us in those said poorer countries to seek and find alternative solutions for these problems, you would have us think Skerrit does not know what he is about?. While you are busy calling people ‘sot ‘ you might want to spend a moment or two to think through the ramifications of unfettered global warming , what it means for us as a people and how we would deal with such an eventuality. Put yourself in the PM’s shoes for a moment , There is nothing more ‘sot’ than commenting without forethought and dealing with personalities rather than issues.

The smart leaders of the continue to use our PM to say and do what they avoid, knowing that our pm can easily fall into their trap. Now here is what Russian president, Mr. Putin had to say at that same conference, dealing with the same subject: https://www.google.com/amp/www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/paris-agreement-putin-trump-russia-climate-change-response-latest-news-dont-worry-be-happy-a7769326.html%3Famp

Dissing someone for taking care of their home first is hypocritical. Charity begins at home, and we all practice it in some form or another. Any leader who does not prioritize his/her people’s needs over the needs of foreigners is no leader and deserves to be given the boot. The U.S. finally has a leader who puts his people first. Suck it up and stop whining!
