PM Skerrit stresses Caribbean unity at Barbadian concert

The Prime Minister addressing attendees of the concert on Sunday night

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt told a large crowd gathered at the Kensington Oval in Barbados for the “One Caribbean: The Concert For The Children of Dominica” on Sunday night, that the people of the Caribbean are one.

“All ah we is one Caribbean,” the prime minister stated.

He said in formal CARICOM meetings, regional integration is discussed as as an ideal to work towards, but “tonight, here at Kensington Oval, it is a mission that has been accomplished.”

“In this crowd I see no Antiguans, St Lucians, Trinidadians, Jamaicans, Dominicans or Barbadians,” he said as the crowd cheered. “I see an experience of one people from the region.”

Skerrit began by singing Jimmy Cliff’s hit “Many rivers to cross” and then stopped to read his speech.

He spoke about about the virtues of regional integration and promised that Dominica would rebuild stronger with help from its Caribbean neighbours.

He thanked the Barbadian public for their support of Dominica after it was devastated by Tropical Storm Erika on August 27. The Prime Minister also expressed his thanks to the artistes and organisers of the concert.

Skerritt also went into the crowd to hug several people who expressed their condolences over the tragedy that killed many Dominicans.

Among officials at the concert were acting Prime Minister of Barbados Richard Sealy, Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley and Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Assembly Santia Bradshaw.

Several Barbadians and Caribbean artistes performed at the show, among them were TC, Edwin Yearwood, Red Plastic Bag, Leadpipe and Saddis, Alison Hinds, King Bubba, Peter Ram, John King, Lil Rick, Grynner , Mikey Nahtalee and MRBLOOD of Barbados.

Destra and Denise Belfon of Trinidad, Skinny Fabulous and Hypa 4000 from St Vincent, international reggae singer Maxi Priest and Admiral Tibet and Luciano of Jamaica, also performed.

Dominica’s Michele Henderson also performed.

MCs were local Barbadians, Mac Fingall and Jamar The Starr.

In all these questions about Skerrit’s Versace shirt, some see nothing wrong with that, but if you do recall the same skerrit could not afford a basic $500 suit to his inaugural in 2000, but now he affords a $3,500 shirt to a fund raising event.

It is stipid to suggest that the cost of the PM out fit is insignificant particularly in our time of need. A French president I believe it was Sarkozy was seen wearing a very expensive watch diring the time the French economy was doing very bad. The news reporter captured his wrist with the watch on during a public appearance and the matter was a huge scandal. It must so be noted that Sarkozy was also accused of corruption.
What was of significance is the fact that ehilr the French people wereunder economic preszure the president was evidently living a lavish life style. The same scrutiny should apply to the PM in our time of need and hardship

Did anyone think that the PM got that shirt a few days ago just to make an appearance at the Concernt? Common people – the man must have had his shirt months ago and decided to wear it. So what if he wears his shirt – I guess he will be a bit aware of what he wears after all this hoopla. He will have to wear his bowman to go to formal functions… give me a break. This is so trivial I have no idea why we cant get it.

The point is, he cancelled the Creole Music Fest, meanwhile he all over attending everybody else relief concert and having fun at our expense. Gabbed up in thousand dollar button downs. While the people here suffering and trying to deal with life or a lack of life in the place. No emotional relief no sense of ease up for many. He tell us to just give the donations in $$ instead of having private aid concerts which can raise revenue in place of the fest. even the community day of service jump up cancel. meanwhile he sewoing hard like a mouse because the cat is away. it even seeming like hunting season cancel.

After we clean, we go in the streets and litter as we are accustomed to. Litter bugs need to stay home after the clean up campaign – stay at your homes and litter as much as you like. I am happy that the Community Day Street jump up is cancelled! Great idea!!! Litter Bugs Stay Home!!!

OMG how lovely! Our Prime Minister was dressed in this ultra expensive VERSACE outfit to a fund raiser for our storm ravaged country. He was even dressed better than the Acting Prime Minister of Barbados who was in attendance and the Leader of the Opposition of Barbados who organized the fund raiser.

So I know you Domiincans trying to figure out why dress like this. Obviously he had to stand out from among the rest. So when the news goes around, those persons hesitant to attend the show would rush to attend.

Remember we do not want ration is cash we want. What better way to attract attention than to dress in VERSACE to bring in the crowds. And trust me, if Prime Minister Skerrit was not starring at that concert, I doubt people would have attended.

Many Dominicans must not continue to bury their heads in the sinking sand.

What excuse could be given for Skerritt to evade the important UN General Assembly, absent himself, refuse to speak, explain, dialogue with the world leaders, hundreds of them there, plus the millions who would listen to Dominica’s plight? Opportunity lost, Big time.

But alas !!!!! Attendance at that Barbados concert was priority. No presence to recognize the great efforts of UWI, WICB, WI players at the Cricket relief Match in same Barbados. Dr. Benjamin, your services are badly needed.

It’s mind-boggling. But wait. Since the revelation of FBI’s arrest of NG Lap Seng in the US, fear has crept in some circles. The net is closing in. Expect anything irrational. Dominicans brace yourselves. Expect the unexpected. But do not be surprised at narcissist behaviours.

  23. The Authorities
    October 5, 2015

One of the most recognisable and elaborate designs in the fashion world, Versace brings out their iconic print on a lavish looking bomber jacket. Constructed from quilted silk, the opulent bomber features the brand’s signature design print and a price tag of £1500.

We attempted to dissuade the Hon. Prime Minister from wearing this outfit, as such extravagance does not portray the visual message of humility which he should be striving for, but we were not convincing enough.

    • Tjebe fort
      October 5, 2015

He will wear this when he goes begging for money to be sure!

    • The Real Facts
      October 5, 2015

You are joking. You’re even criticizing him for wearing an outfit? You are a bold person. Does anyone dissuade you from wearing whatever you feel like? What if you were invited to a wedding, a cocktail party or going out to some fancy restaurant? Because of your supposedly humility, if you have any, what would you have worn, house and casual clothes?
For goodness sake he is a West Indian/Dominican – from the Caribbean. He attended a concert where the majority would be attired in similar fashion. Why should he not have the freedom and right to wear this outfit to suit the occasion? It is not a crime nor immoral. People as you have nothing else to do but to scrutinize and nit-pick everything the PM does. This is a poor habit and attitude. Bad person.

      • The Authorities
        October 5, 2015

The Hon. Prime Minister was attending a function at which he was representing the people of Dominica. This was not a private or personal matter like his son’s bar mitzvah or his niece’s quinceañera.

You claim “He attended a concert where the majority would be attired in similar fashion.” Are we to conclude that he was consuming excessive amounts of alcohol and smoking marijuana if the majority were so doing? We think not. He is neither a follower nor a performer. He is a leader. Our leader.

As debonair as he looks in it, common sense dictates that even if it was a gift, wearing such an outfit was inappropriate for this occasion. Our clothes say a great deal about who we are and can signal a great deal of socially important things to others, even if the impression is actually unfounded.

Nonetheless, we The Authorities respect your opinion, so let’s agree to disagree on this issue.

        @The Real Facts October 5, 2015

I am very glad to read that comment of yours above–that should cause the 44 people to put their foot in their mouth, who gave that “imposter” thumbs up, because they though it was you; but I know that it wasn’t–and I know who it is.

I am talking about something some one wrote one day last week; but they used your blog name except that person left out the “s” as you write in “Facts”–something to do with reading a Gazette; which turned you around from being the side of our PM–I knew that it was all a lie., and you did not write it–glad to have you back again.

And the other note, I completely agree with you. The PM is attending a social event of Caribbean music and dancing –did Dominicans expect him to wear a funeral suit? But how foolish.

Anyway I doubt that PM Skerrit will take on that kind of foolish and childish outburst –by now he should be used to that–he has better things to take care of.

She reminds me so much of our very own Joshua Francis and the sooner he becomes our leader the bettThis is the only way that our UWP can win any election. What you think Mr. Francis can do, so can Mr. Skerrit–but neither of them can do it on their own. I hope they don’t report that he was seen wining and dinning with a montgay and a banks in his hands. Remember he was concerned about Dominicans being seen by the rest of the world with two kubuli in their hands having a great time after the passage of Erika. Do as I say, but not as I do.

It is a shmae to have Skerritt as my P.M
De man was not even at the U.N summit to address the world , to tell them about our plight down here, but there he was dancing in a fete.
Sometimes your efforts will be better served if you just take that ill-earned money and go meet your family out there.
    Resign now!

Fellow Dominicans, I regret to inform you that due to the passage of Tropical Storm Erika we were forced to cancel the World Creole Music Festival, which is a product of the United Workers Party (UWP) created in 1997 to stimulate economic activity, increase visitor arrivals and spending during the independence season.

And while fellow Dominicans I had a ball of a time in Barbados at the concert, and I even tried to sing Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers Cross”, you all will have to wait until next year for the World Creole Music Festival, and let’s hope another storm do not pass before.

And it doesn’t matter if there is no WCMF since it’s a workers brain child any way, we might just call it something else we can call our own.

    • October 6, 2015

@ Frank, they are not so much ungrateful as much as they are “rude” and “disrespectful”! The man is their Prime Minister; are they saying that he doesn’t know what to wear for a certain occasion?

They are also like “country bookies” too; writing comments about things, which they do not understand–they don’t know that they are making themselves a “laughing stock” to the world. Good grief!

You are free to organize a party and invite all those whom you know. You could also ask them for a donation to assist Dominica, especially those who were affected by TS Erika. You could match their donations. This is an act of charity, better than criticisms and throwing derogatory words at your PM.
How do you expect to receive God’s blessings and graces? Do you not know that your words deny yourself God’s blessings, graces and virtues?. Furthermore, people as you set a bad example.

“All ah we is one Caribbean,” the prime minister stated… You are not serious- What about All ah we is one Dominica Mr. Skerrit ? that was a show and you were one the ‘actors’ and ‘performers’.I don’t believe that for a second Roosevelt.. You are not serious or sincere when comes to Dominica and those who don’t like or support you and your government. In Barbados you were performing that was it Mr.

Among officials at the concert were acting Prime Minister of Barbados Richard Sealy.

I guess the PM of Barbados felt so insulted by Skerrit that he had to stay away and send his deputy. After all, this was a concert organized by the opposition Barbados Labor Party. That action alone speaks of disunity amongst CARICOM.

“In this crowd I see no Antiguans, St Lucians, Trinidadians, Jamaicans, Dominicans or Barbadians,” he said as the crowd cheered. “I see an experience of one people from the region

In such a large crowd Skerrit saw one Caribbean. I wish this hypocrite PM would see one people in Dominica instead of categorizing us as workers, and start to victimize us.

      • Passing cloud
        October 5, 2015

@ Mike, I am no fool even if I am a passing cloud. Most political leaders plan to leave the country when they do not want to be part of something. Just ask Skerrit. The PM of Barbados felt betrayed by Skerrit seeing how he was the first country to come to his rescue after Erika, by arranging with the former PM of Trinidad to give him a helicopter ride to Dominica, and sent his people to help with the search and rescue effort. Less than a month later, Skerrit is already appearing at a concert organized by the Opposition? Margweysa Skerrit!

Imagine for one second how Skerrit would have treated it if the PM of Barbados came to Dominica to be part of an event organized by UWP. Boy I bet you neither Skerrit, nor his deputy if he has one, or any member of his party would attend no matter how important it was.

If Skero did not show up I believe the PM of Barbados would attend because of the cause. But to see it is organized by the opposition labor party and Skero coming.? Hell no!

You can truly tell who your friends are and who are not your friends especially in times of a disaster.

Skeritt – your legacy shall be one of genuine Love for people and the significant advancement of our development as a people. May God greatly bless you for you mean good even if the task at hand is monumental but we are absolutely confident that we shall evolve into a greater and more prosperous and united people – all for each and each for all…..with the will of God we shall make it.
Thank you Barbados—people are not aware the some 200 plus Barbadian slaves were taken from that island and relocated to the Geneva Plantation during the slaving period ? Well that is a piece of History that many of us are not aware of. A review of the non French surnames in Grand Bay has marked similarities with those found in Barbados e.g Stewart, Benoit, Benn etc
May Jah make us work together in unity for our development in this time of crisis. Let us pray for our people and country for God is watching all of us. Blessed are the peace makers.
