Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit is the first leader from the English speaking Caribbean to be invited to speak at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The Prime Minister will address the Forum as a panelist on the platform for the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) -Latin America and the Caribbean: Cooperation Gains Momentum.
The St Petersburg International Economic Forum will be convened under the Theme “Achieving a New Balance on the Global Stage” and will run from June 1st to 3rd.
Amongst the international attendees at the forum will be the Secretary General of the United Nations, The Prime Minister of India, The Chancellor of Austria, as well as many international political and business leaders.
The President of the Russian Federation, H.E Vladimir Putin, is expected to deliver the feature address on day two of the three-day forum, which is expected to have over 4000 attendees in all.
Prime Minister Skerrit is expected to hold high level discussions with Government Officials including the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov.
The Prime Minister is accompanied by Ambassador Steve Ferrol, Secretary to the Cabinet.
Hon. Reginald Austrie is the Acting Prime Minister.

I am very happy about this news but at the same time skeptical.
It’s been alleged that the Russians interfered with the 2016 US presidential elections and as a result, Trump became President. As we speak we know there is a lot of investigation going on in the US as the FBI is busy working to ensure that doesn’t happen in the US again. Interestingly the same Russian whose name is alleged to involved in this allegation is that of foreign minister Surgey Lavrov, whom Skerrit will hold high level conversation with. We know Skerrit is desperate and wants to win the next election at all costs so he could remain in power. International geopolitics are changing every moment , every day, and any decision taken by e.g G7 or neocolonial international groupings, have both direct and indirect implications for both developed and developing nations, Dominica is not exempted. Could this have been organized to divert attention away from the Ng Lap Seng trial, which was due to have started in New York this week? However, at the last minute the authorities decided to delay this to the end of June. Mr. Skerrit would not have known this until a few days ago, too late to cancel his trip to St. Petersburg.

For any clear thinking person of whichever political platform or divide or political tribe, the issue of the Prime Minister’s visit to Russia and his impending address to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia transcends petty politics. A prime minister must seek out new wholesome alliances and forge diplomatic and economic ties and strengthen such ties where they already exist. every issue surrounding our wholesome sustainable development must be dealt with and treated on its merit.
I think the PM’s move to address this Forum is prudent and timely and an opportunity to foster more close knit economic ties. The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is an ideal economic sector platform to engage conglomerate and multi-sectoral companies from diverse countries. I applaud this move. MY DEEPEST PRAYER AND HOPE IS THAT HE HAS THE RIGHT DELEGATION WITH HIM!!!
