Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, has urged the National Emergency Planning Organisation (NEPO) to strengthen its operational structure, given the higher level of unpredictability in the weather during the hurricane season.
He was speaking at a meeting with the NEPO and other dignitaries on August 23rd 2017 at the Office of Disaster Management in Jimmit.
Skerrit stated that the organisation must seek to make preparation for circumstances that fall outside the frame of the hurricane season.
“So while NEPO looks at the ‘hurricane season’, I think NEPO needs to look at its mandate as being much broader than just hurricane season, and only meeting during the hurricane season…We have to move beyond just our thinking that NEPO is just for the hurricane season,” he said.
He added that if some disaster were to happen outside of the season, the organisation would be immobilized because no preparation would have been made for that.
Skerrit suggested that better operational infrastructure needs to be put in place to ensure that everyone directly involved in the organisation does what needs to be done.
“I think we need to take note of that…I really want us to put better infrastructure in place, and I am not talking about river walls and sea defences. I am talking about the operational infrastructure. The Emergency Operations Centre can do so much. If we around here in this room are not pulling our weight, we do not have a chance,” he remarked.
Is the PM for real? if you can not manage an empty country with a simple situation like this is a full one you will be able to manage when you populate it with new citizens from your so called CBI program.
